I really wish I could attend this tour...
But unfortunately they come nowhere near me.

Last weekend my gf and I went down to Atlantic City to check out the Dirty Head's Island Glow tour.  My gf had been pretty jealous that I saw them last year and she couldn't come, so we made it a point to check them out even though they weren't coming as close as I'd like.  They are also a band that we both really enjoy and their latest album, Midnight Control, is probably my favorite album of theirs so this was a much anticipated concert for the two of us.

I had never been to Ovation Hall at the Oceans Resort Casino.  Really really nice casino and the venue was great. We got there early to play some games and hang out before the show.  Ended up winning $100 playing a South Park slot.  They also had a Dirty Heads happy hour before the concert at one of the bars in the casino.  They had a live band playing reggae music and super cheap drinks so we hung out there for a bit after I cashed out my winnings.  Just really chill atmosphere for the chill music.

Venue is a big theater, about 5k capacity, but they pulled in the lower seat section for a huge flat GA floor.  We bought seats in the back because my foot's been bothering me which was nice because it was empty in the back.  Turns out security was not enforcing seating so I think people who had seats mostly ended up on the floor.  Also security not enforcing rules was great, because the place was a cloud of marijuana smoke  :lol

G Love and Special Sauce opened the show.  I've seen them once before, 20 years ago.  I remembered not being into it then, and I wasn't into it now.  Just not for me, but I thought it was cool he did a bunch of Philly themed songs since AC isn't too far from Philly.

Next up was Grammy winning rapper Lupe Fiasco.  Funny enough, I've seen him once before in 2018 perform before the Dirty Heads at a festival.  I'm not much into rap so it's not really something I totally got into, but I do think Lupe is a good rapper and he was engaging and very active on stage.  I can respect his art and his live show, but it was msotly not for me.  The weird thing was during his set the house lights went on and all the fire lights started blinking (no alarm was heard) and it was basically ignored by Lupe and he just performed with the lights on.  Very odd.  I ended up recording that song because I thought the whole thing was odd.

Dirty Heads were SO good.  This band just keeps getting better, especially live.  They just have so many live musicians on stage now that it really adds to the show especially some of the older songs that get a bit of an update to include the live horns and whatnot.  Sadly, they didn't play the songs I wanted to see the most on the new album and instead focusesd on playing 3 of the b-sides from the album.  Pretty cool and those songs are good, but I was slightly dissapointed they didn't play what I consider some of their best songs.  The stage set up was pretty cool, pirate themed. About half way through the set we went to the floor to join in the cloud of smoke and enjoy the show much closer.  They ended the set with one of my favorite older songs that they havent done on the more recent tours, Moon Tower.  But they did a slgihtyl different version, a chill song soft taken to an even chiller mood.  Everyone had their lights up and smoke out.  Fucking phenomenal moment. They ended the set with the first song on the new album which was a bit odd I thought, but I loved it! Great day/night in AC.

Since Dirty Heads are reggae/hip hop/alternative rock, I'm not sure they are something anyone here would be into, but they did this song that's closer to a psychedilic rock song that I love, maybe a good intro point to a prog nerd to check them out. Also really looking forward to Voice of Baceprot later that week, not deeply familiar with their discography, but some live stuff of theirs I've seen shows they out on a tremendous show. It'll be even cooler in a tiny club I'd imagine

Okay, finally took a look at my master concert list.

To-date, I've seen 271 shows all-time, starting in 1995.

I've seen 11 this year, and nine are currently on the schedule and paid for:

Alter Bridge/Sevendust/Mammoth WVH
Extreme/Living Colour (2x)
Don Felder
The Darkness
Alice in Chains
Kenny Loggins/Richard Marx
Death Angel/Forbidden (2x)

>>>>If I don't miss any of those, and I'm not planning to, it would make 20 shows (so far) in a concert year, which is the most number of shows I'll have seen in a calendar year. The previous/current high is 16, which I did in 2010, 2012, and 2019.

So if I get to the remaining nine, I'll be at 280 through 2023. Which puts me at an average of 10 concerts a year over the 28 years I've been attending gigs.

Nice :metal :metal

So I have a ticket for Mudvayne/Coal Chamber/Gwar/Nonpoint/Butcher Babies tonight at Jones Beach... anyone want my ticket for free?  I got it for $25 on the livenation sale kind of as a "maybe" but now the day has come and I have no desire to get to Long Island from NJ  :lol

I do however plan on attending the Godsmack/Staind show tomorrow night with my lawn pass

I still got my Disturbed/Breaking Benjamin/Jinjer concert from last week review in draft form.  This is really lengthy to write and it's pretty time consuming.  So many good and wordy things I want to say about that bill.

as long as the weather holds, tonight I'm going to Godsmack & Staind with Mix Master Mike from Beastie Boys opening. My gf wants to see Staind so she's coming. Should be fun even though I'm not too into either band, but I'm surprised to see the venue is mostly sold so it'll be a big rock concert. Apparently Staind has a new song that's a radio rock #1 song.

Well tonight's concert was a complete disaster. Between the Buried and Me with Thank You Scientist and Rivers of Nihil. Of the three, TYS was the only band I had any interest in seeing. I got to the venue a little bit before 7:30 thinking maybe I'd catch the end of River of Nihil's set, then see TYS, then potentially bail partway through BtBaM. Somehow at 7:25 Thank You Scientist was already 90% of the way through their set, I only caught the last song and a half. I then nope'd out and called an Uber before the end of the first Between the Buried and Me song.
Photobucket sucks.

Well, this is a bummer (but not really).  I thought I was going to check ticket prices for Metallica and their two shows at SoFi Stadium and it looks reasonably priced for the two day pass (as far as stadium shows go nowadays). Found that it's on the weekend of my trip to Grand Rapids and Chicago.  Not going to change plans, but I'm going to think on the back of my mind, this may be the last time they do a big headlining show in the LA area.  I mean there's a 6 year gap between them playing Rose Bowl in 2017 and these shows in late August.  Who knows when's the next time they will be in these parts again.
 Bummer.

Yeah, last time Metallica played here (NJ) was 7 years ago. Sometimes they don't come back for awhile.  That's this weekend for me!

Last Saturday was the Godsmack/Staind show.  Of course we got to the venue and I didn't have my lawn pass with me  :lol luckily I live close by, but by the time we got into the venue, Mix Master Mike was already finishing his opening DJ set.  From what I saw, I guess I didn't miss much though.  Just him playing music basically, so there really wasn't much of a performance.  Nothing More was supposed to have that opening slot and I would have much rather had a live band.

THen it started to rain and lightning.  Luckily the storm was pretty quick moving as you could see the clouds rolling by quickly.  It downpoured for a good 15 minutes and lead to about a 30 minute delay for Staind to take the stage.  When they finally did, it was epic though.  The rain was still coming down but the storm had mostly passed, (and even though it was raining, it was quite bright out) and a huge rainbow formed right over the venue.  It's moments like this where you'd rather be out on the lawn than in a seat below because you'd totally miss the beauty of mother nature.  They opened with their new single (apparently a rock radio #1 hit) and I captured it where you can see the rain and near the end of the song I zoom out to show the radio.  This song will likely go down as one of my top concert moments of the year. I was so fucking giggly for this moment even though I'm not really much of a Staind fan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok84Wnz4NPM

My gf took this picture of me recording that video:

I thought their set was just OK.  I'm not much of a fan, but the guys got a great voice and he sounded good as well as the band.  They played their hit songs that I knew and it was enjoyable, but other than the crazy weather, the set was nothing spectacular for me.

Place filled out quite a bit by the time Godsmack went on.  I'm legit shocked this concert sold as well as it did (basically sold out of seats and lawn was pretty packed).  In the end, the rain delay just pushed everything back, but there was no cut of either bands set which was cool, the show just went to 11:15 instead of 10:45.  One of the staff workers confirmed that to me while I was getting a drink.

I've also never been much of a Godsmack fan, but I found their set to be more enjoyable and musically a bit closer to what I like than Staind.  I must say  though, I was impressed with Sully Erna.  Just didn't realize how talented he was between signing, guitar, piano, and even playing drums.  Guy was just all over the place doing everything.  And honestly, he ripped on the crowd so good that I just have to give him credit.  He basically said that the crowd was filled with puffy people with fake muscles and take tits  :rollin so true too! The butt rock crowd really came out that night.  He also said something along the lines of whats the point of all the muscles when you work for tmobile customer service?  :lol They did a few songs I enjoyed, had pyro and confetti, and for the encore they did their newer ballad song, that I really liked.  Probably my favorite song of the night.  Godsmack - Under Your Scars LIVE @ PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel NJ 7/29/2023 and while I recorded basically the whole normal song, I stopped recording when he started extending the song and talking because a huge brawl broke out a bit in front of me.  It was far enough away that I couldn't tell what was happening, but with all the flashing lights and people running, it was clear a fight broke out.  Followed by security escorting someone out and shortly after the EMS carting someone out who looked knocked out. (I couldn't tell if this was from a fight or from alcohol/drugs though).  I mean, this was all during a ballad?!  Yeah, Sully was right about all these juiced up meatheads in the crowd.  :lol

Godsmack & Staind LIVE @ PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel NJ 7/29/2023

Next up:

TONIGHT is Snoop Dogg!  :lol I've seen a couple rap artists before, but never went to a full blown rap concert.  Since I have the summer pass, figured time to check something different out.  Made sure to stop at the dispensary during my lunch break today since I feel like that's a requirement to attend such a show.

But this next week is PACKED:

August 2nd - Snoop Dog & Wiz Khalifa @ PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ
August 4th - Metallica, Pantera, & Mammoth WVH @ Metlife Stadium, East Rutherford NJ
August 5th - Fall Out Boy & Bring Me The Horizon @ PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ
August 6th - Metallica, Five Finger Death Punch, & Ice Nine Kills @ Metlife Stadium, East Rutherford NJ
August 8th - Incubus & Badflower @ Stone Pony Summer Stage, Asbury Park NJ

I got one more quiet week, then the big one... BAND-MAID on the 14th followed by Voice of Baceprot on Friday.

Really toyed with flying to Houston to see Gacharic Spin on their first post covid US show on the 12th, but it'd make for a brutal weekend.

My wife and 3 of her friends went Tuesday night to see Foreigner and Loverboy in Saratoga, NY. She enjoyed both a lot (as a teenager in the 80s they were right in her wheelhouse) but Foreigner was a little better, even without the original dudes.

I went to Flo Rida (my girlfriend dragged me out- and tickets were $15).

a) lots of shawtys got low
b) His drummer (whoever he is) is very VERY good. Definitely had the chops of a metal player- which was a nice surprise since I always assume a drum machine at a hip/hop/rap shows

4 concerts in the last 5 days... let's go back to my first full rap concert from last wednesday....

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa! So I'm not much of a rap fan, but since I have my summer pass for the venue and my gf said she'd come with me. Weather was nice as well.  There were like 3 other rappers to open the show, but we got there after Wiz had already started.  Lawn was packed with kids.  Literally all like teenagers.  On our way into the venue we saw an under cover cop come and stop a bootleg tshirt guy, as that happened some kid next to me started bitching to me about security kicking him out for having a fake ID.  I asked if it was fake, yes it was  :lol just an example of the type of crowd this was.  White entitled kids.  :lol They were the worst part of the night, being dicks on the lawn and constantly pushing into us for no reason when walking by.  Probably the first big night out for a lot of these people.

Anyway, I don't really know any Wiz that he did during his set, I was mostly not into it.  Snoop Dogg came on after a very short break, maybe 10-15 minutes?  I didn't realize there would be such a quick turn around. We finally pushed past a row of kids to find a very open spot on the lawn with basically no one around us.  The place wasn't sold out and it was generally pretty packed, but like, people I guess just didn't know thye could move down on the lawn or something.  Snoop was a lot of fun.  Had strippers dancing for most of the set.  I even recognized a lot of the songs.

The best part of the show was the encore.  It was basically a set with both Snoop and Wiz.  They had a car out on stage and it was like the two of them hanging in the car.  It was really cool.  When one was singing the other was basically just chilling and smoking a blunt.  They did a lot of the hit songs then.  I honestly had a great time, but mostly for that encore collaboration.  Hopefully this picture isn't too hot for DTF  :lol

I wrote in the Metallica thread a bit about the double Metallica concert weekend, so I won't repeat that here, but add a few thoughts on the overall shows and not so much Metallica specifically....

Both nights were a lot of fun.  The huge stage in the round was very unique and I thought it was cool to see the openers also play on that stage, but generally, I'd prefer a traditional stage set up.

Mammoth WVH sounded pretty poor, but I enjoyed the set and it was cool to get to see them perform on their 2nd album release day.

Pantera were the highlight of the openers.  Incredible set.  Wild crowd for them.  Walk may have been the best song of the entire weekend from any band.

Ice Nine Kills were not my thing, but they had a fun stage show.  Basically a horror show metal core band.  So most songs had some sort of stabbing of someone involved  :lol.  LIke I said, it was entertaining set.

Five Finger Death Punch are probably my least favorite of the four openers.  Their singer is great with crowd engagement.  Having two back up live singers on stage also helped to have a nice good vocal sound.  Just musicaly not for me.

Metallica were great both nights, but night 2 was definitely better for whatever reason.  Sound was better, crowd was better, and I personally enjoyed the setlist better.

At the end of the day, great value and great time getting to experience this

Metallica Five Finger Death Punch Ice Nine Kills LIVE @ Metlife Stadium East Rutherford NJ 8/6/2023

Metallica Pantera & Mammoth WVH LIVE @ Metlife Stadium East Rutherford NJ 8/4/2023

Now sandwiched between the two Metallica shows was a sold out Fall Out Boy and Bring Me The Horizon concert at my local amphitheater. I'm not crazy about either band, but I had the summer pass and it was saturday so I attended by myself.  I had an absolute blast.  I dare to say this, but Fall Out Boy may have actually been the most fun set of the entire weekend.  I'm definitely more of a fan now than I was before.  I also didn't realize how many hit songs they had.  Their poppy stuff is fantastic and very catchy music.  I dare to say I like that more than their pop punk stuff.

Anyway, Bring Me THe Horizon were a good opener.  Singer had great energy and his vocals were solid with the clean and screaming vocals.  I didn't love the music.  It wasn't bad, but I wasn't captivated by most of what I heard.  Near the end of their set the singer asked everyone to get to the ground and to my amazement, the entire sold out lawn got down (including myself).  Awesome moment.

Now back to Fall Out Boy... they had a great stage show with plenty of pyro and fireworks.  They also did this Magic 8 Ball thing where they would (seemingly, I do wonder if this is planned) play random songs chosen.  So there were quite a few hardly ever played songs.  It was a really fun set.  Also included covers of Enter Sandman (just the intro and first virse/chorus) that felt fitting given it was Metallica weekend.  I haven't gotten The Phoenix out of my head since the show  :lol

Fall Out Boy & Bring Me The Horizon LIVE @ SOLD OUT PNC Bank Arts Center Holmdel NJ 8/5/2023

Tonight is concert #5 in 7 days.  I'm tired, but excited for Incubus  :metal

Some of the fancam of the early Band Maid shows on this leg clearly show the girls have stepped up things massively. Getting soooo pumped for next Monday. Still haven't caught what VoB is doing, may go into that one fairly blind, but I'm really enjoying their new album. Next week is going to fucking slay.

First day of a festival here, the big 2 for me today played back to back.

King Gizzard - phenomenal show, first time seeing them but hopefully not the last. great mix of material but i suppose the one negative for me was that the festival limits them to a 70 minute set and i would gladly have taken another 30 minutes or more. that's just a downside of festivals but happy to finally have seen them live and i do hope they return but outside the festival format. setlist was mostly newer songs (from the last 2 years) with the exception of their i'm in your mind medley that started off the show.

Devo - they're out on their 50 year anniversary tour and it does feel cool to be able to tick them off a list and say i have seen them live. i know they're a band that people either love or hate, and i like them for a lot of the reasons that makes other people dislike them, but they're different, they're kinda silly but still write some catchy songs at the heart of it. kinda fun show as well, they all started off wearing black, then they put their traditional cone hats on for a few songs, then had a short intermission where they changed clothes and came back out in yellow overalls. overall a fun show, got to hear most of the songs i was hoping for.

Tomorrow is a bit of an unfortunate situation where the big 2 i'm the most excited are almost book ending the day. Yo La Tengo at 2:30 in the afternoon and then Blur as the headliner from 10:30 to midnight. There's a few things I'm looking to check out in that long stretch in between though, Domi & JD Beck put out a really great jazz album last year and I'm hoping to see them, I'm also planning on checking out Billy Strings for some bluegrass jam. Should also be plenty of time to just relax around the area, sit down and rest, enjoy some food and so on.

Last night was Joe Bonamassa with an Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, for the grand total of $1. Great show that I think they filmed for a dvd release. A good chunk of the back half of the bowl didn't sell which is why there were tickets priced so low, bought my dirt cheap ticket day-of then snuck down like 3 sections to an area that was still mostly empty  :lol

$1 to see Joe Bonamassa.  Wow.  Decided to pull up TickPick to see if there are any cheap day-of seats and I found that Greta Van Fleet is playing at the Forum today and the cheapest seats are going for like less than $15.00 for a 200 section seat.  I'll pass since I don't really feel like driving to Inglewood on a Thursday, but that's something to point out.

Second day at the festival was great but tiring, I'm happy I was able to spend time sitting down in between the bands I wanted to see.

Yo La Tengo - they hadn't played in the country for 10 years apparently but they put on a great show. could possibly be my favorite trio because they're so versatile and they kinda utilize and maximize what they have. so across the hour they played, all 3 band members got to sing (as they do on albums too) and they even shifted instruments around depending on what songs they played. the setlist had some nice variety to it, got both the obligatory new songs to promote the new album but also a nice mix of older songs. was hoping to hear my favorite song of theirs - blue line swinger, which they unfortunately did not play. however they did close the show with pass the hatchet, i think i'm goodkind - another favorite, so overall i'm still happy. really hope they come back here on a tour of their own, i would buy tickets in a heartbeat.

Blur - the big headliner of the day, had not seen them before and very happy to finally have crossed that off my list. despite how popular they are i kinda feel like they fly a bit under the radar, and i rarely hear people talk about them as much as radiohead for example, or other contemporary bands of that era. maybe it's the lack of huge hit songs? everyone knows song 2, which is a fun song and got the audience going, but i don't think it's really among their best songs. they played a nice mix of new songs, the classics you would want to hear and then also a handful of kinda odd but interesting deep cuts. one of those setlists that had something for everyone. there's a couple of songs i was hoping they would play but didn't - like oily water or no distance left to run, but i got a few songs i absolutely adore like this is a low, tender or villa rosie, so i can't complain. overall they delivered a strong show and i would see them again.

I also caught The Soundtrack of Our Lives, and thought they put on a good show. I'm not that familiar with their discography aside from having heard my dad play their music, but he was telling me this reunion tour with a few dates was a "must see" and he was jealous he would miss out on it. So I kinda saw them for him and they were good. Maybe would have been great if I had been more familiar with the songs, except for a few that i recognized ofc.

Also watched Billy Strings and he put on a really fun show. Lots of people clapping and cheering and it's the kind of infectious music that gets you moving along even if you don't know all the songs.

Otherwise it was mostly bits and pieces from other artists but not enough to pass judgment.

incubus last week were fun, but definitely a bit upset with the set list and the venue (although the venue issue was known going in).

Basically I saw Incubus last year at the much bigger amphitheater that they always play when they come through NJ.  This time they played the ~1/4 size Stone Pony Summer Stage.  It sold out, not surprisingly, but the venue has a 10pm curfew due to local rules.  So all the concerts there start and end early.  Knew that going in.  What I didn't expect was Badflower to go on at 6:45 and be over at 7:15.  I got in at 7pm so missed half their set.  Incubus went on at 8pm and were done at 9:30pm.  So a hole 30 minutes that could have pushed the concert back.  I don't think I've seen a concert there end that early, usually closer to 10pm.  The venue even advertised as "music from 6pm to 10pm" And there was another opener so figured 7pm was a good time to arrive (and the earliest possible for me, I even left work an hour early to get there for that time).   And then Incubus played almost the same songs as last year.  They rotated in the same song they rotated in last year.  There were 3 different tracks total, all of which were net negatives. They also toured with a replacement bassist, who was fine and quite attractive so maybe even a net positive on that end  :lol

So now that I got my complaints out of the way... I did enjoy seeing Incubus at a different venue, an all GA outdoor venue too.  I thought they sounded pretty good and Brandon has his vocal issues but was mostly fine to good at the show.  Seeing them perform while still light out and sunsetting was cool too.  Someone had a drone right above me too and I'd really love to see the footage.  A lot of the songs had cool breakdowns where they'd go into a cover song and come back out to finish the track.  They've done this before, but this show felt like there were at least 3 instances of it happening.  Sadly for me, I needed to use the bathroom (and wanted a drinK) so I left my awesome center spot and couldn't get anywhere close back.  Actually got yelled at by some lady because it was impossible to squeeze out back and even though I said excuse me and sorry, she still gave me a mouth full for passing between her.  Oh well, maybe don't block the steps???  As much as I like Incubus, this sadly goes down as one of my least favorite shows this year.

August 17th - Slightly Stoopid, Sublime with Rome, Atmosphere & The Movement @ PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ
August 19th - Kamelot, Battle Beast & Xandria @ New York City NY

Well, I've done it now.  I bought a ticket on TickPick for $42 for Band-Maid's show at the House of Blues in Anaheim tomorrow.  No, I will not dress in a maid outfit and this will be the first concert in about 5 years that I will not wear an Alter Bridge or their associated side bands t-shirt.  I will sport the Man With a Mission shirt I bought at their concert back in May.  Give as much support to the Japanese bands as possible so that more of them will come to these parts more often.  I know it's tough with logistics and stuff, but every little bit helps.  Now to figure out whether to take a bus there and an Uber/Lyft home or park at the Gardenwalk and wait 30 minutes to get out of the lot.

Band-Maid - House of Blues - Anaheim, California.  August 15th, 2023

My list as of right now.  Going to be a busy two weeks.  Will see Band-Maid tomorrow.  Might go to a meet-up of a Hockey Youtuber on Wednesday.  Alter Bridge and Sevendust in a week and a half in Grand Rapids and then go see a podcast live show in Chicago the next day.

Fucking sweet bud, you'll love it, they're so good live.

In line now for the Sacramento show, probably about 60 peeps here already. It's basically a tailgating atmosphere, lots of comradery and bragging of who has the most unique/awesome Jmetal story.

Incubus - Hollywood Bowl - Los Angeles, California.  October 6th, 2023

Now this should be a good Incubus show.  Not sure if you are aware, but they are playing the entire Morning View album at that show for its 20th anniversary.  I'd love to be there for that.

^^ Oooo, I actually didn't know that.  I do like the two main songs from that album, Nice to Know You and Wish You Were Here, the most from what I heard from them.
