edit: quoted for truth from a lyrics website comments:

Quote
Swim to the Moon is like White Walls older brother moving back home after college. Incredibly good, can't get enough. Can not wait for the tour

Except White Walls doesn't get caught by his mom masturbating to gay porn midway through the song.

 :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin

White Walls > Swim to the Moon

White Walls has less filler, and a much, much better ending.
Truth. The last few minutes of White Walls are some of the best last minutes of an album I've ever heard

Generic to what? I guess I'm not too familiar to the genre so it sounds all new to me. And at least it's cohesive and interesting whereas half of Swim To The Moon is a wasteland of shoddily throw together riffs.

For some reason, I find that the prog aspects of BtBaM are the only thing that separate them from the rest of the metalcore genre. That's what makes them new, IMO. Otherwise, I don't see how they're so different from stuff like August Burns Red or The Number 12, only BtBaM have a lot of more "classic" progsters on their side for obvious reasons (hanging out with DT and Opeth, etc). Anyway, I think it's funny that we're likely disagree about BtBaM the same way we disagree about DT.

I agree that White Walls has a better ending. But for some reason that song doesn't really wake up for me until the middle section and then, later, the end.

K I finally listened to TGM. 4/5 and maybe my second favourite, must listen again so I can rank it with Alaska.

Don't give a shit about the first 2 albums, the Alaska lineup is practically a new band.

The one thing that really bothers me on The Silent Circus is the bass drum. It sounds more like an annoying pulse than an actual bass drum. Very grating.

Yes. Probably my second favorite verse (first is the final "Look into the picture" on SttM). Great song all around though, but that's definitely the highlight.

I REALLY love More of Myself to Kill of their S/T. At first Tommy's voice was just too hardcore for me, it's so very dark and...to be blunt, flat out annoying at first. After a few listens though I find I'm almost preferring it to their newer stuff, though I can't say it's better just yet. But yeah, MoMtK is the first song I've really gotten into on this album. But I really, really like it; I'm sure the rest will catch on soon enough.

ED: I am, of course, simply saying this to sound cool. But I have a new found appreciation for The Need For Repetition after fornicating to this wonderfully sensual, loving song. It must be tried by all BTBAM fans. It is truly... :hat (pimp?...jazz-like?...cancer-inducing?)

Good thing she couldn't understand the lyrics.

I can understand that. My roots come from Thrash/Metal/Hard rock, so it might have been a bit easier for me to get into it considering that prog came much, much later. But still, anyone that is into BTBAM at all I think can appreciate it if they give it a chance (maybe a few...a lot?). Either way, they still have their prog-inspired, melodic moments on the first two albums, they're simply much lighter and spaced at longer intervals. Maybe not even prog, I'm not sure what to call it, but some of it does remind me of DT's first albums (post-Labrie...of course).

But yeah, it's certainly much more core and a lot less prog.

I was mainly referring to the softer moments, specifically on More of Myself to Kill and parts of Awake. Either that or

Wow, I didn't realize how fucking awesome their rendition of Malpractice is. Amazing song to begin with, but I just might like BTBAM's version better.

Hm? I thought that the word 'post' could be used as a prefix indicating 'after'. So I was saying after Labrie joined the band (but still their first few albums...I include Awake in that category), because BTBAM certainly has no elements that resemble When Dream and Day Unite. Awake might even be a stretch, but I think there are some similarities. Either way, yeah... I meant when Labrie joined. I suppose I should have simply said some of their more melodic moments are similar to certain parts in Awake.

Well post means after, but usually it indicates the end of something, so saying post-labrie would generally mean a time after Labrie left the band. post-Dominici is probably the better way of putting it. But I know what you mean now.

Ah, yeah I can see how that would be confusing. My bad!

Haha... Just listened to Shevanel Cut A Flip for the first time (all the way through) and just heard the "LETS KILL THEM ALLL!" part. Fucking awesome. I really am loving their first two albums more and more the more I hear them, it just took a while for them to click. Rah! Kind of bittersweet, now I'm hoping they go back to their roots on their next album. Either way though, it's all good. Best thing about BTBAM is the huge range of genres in their music.

Yep, that's essentially what I did, albeit with a few songs from different albums heard every now and then. But that sounds like a good plan. Even if I didn't like what I was hearing at the time, I kept an open mind and looked forward to the softer, more prog-influenced moments. Then slowly but surely it caught on. I just finished listening to their S/T all the way through and it was amazing, it's the first time I really listened to Tommy rather than try and focus on the music. Insanely talented band.

Good thing she couldn't understand the lyrics.

Haha I was gonna say, you do know what that song is about right? But I whole-heartedly agree, the first two albums are great, especially the self-titled in my opinion. There are some moments on The Silent Circus that bring it down a bit for me (Shevanel Take 2 for example) but the first I love all the way through. My favourite song has to be Shevanel Cut A Flip. I remember listening to the album for the first time when I was on holiday on a boat, and I was kinda falling asleep with my headphones on, and when the outtro to that song started I kinda drifted into this lucid dream, half awake, half asleep. It was amazing, I never wanted it to end.

By the way, if you don't have it you should pick up the Colors_Live DVD, some great performances of early songs on there, and a few on the bonus DVD on The Silent Circus re-issue.

Anyway, the Colors_Live DVD has a more dynamic version of the studio album. The video interpretations is where it's located.

Alright, I've given Colors_Live three listens.

Parts I love:

When they sound awesome and metal
When they sound progressive
When the vocalist doesn't do his shitty growls/screams

Parts I hate:

When the whole band just goes into full on man-love breakdown mode and decides to have anal fornication in nothing but their socks. (I'm looking at you, half of Foam Born II)
