Ok, so based on everyone's recommendations, I've listened to Selkies a few times, and if this is pretty typical of their sound, I'm going to have to say I don't care for it. Although I love the softer "clean" vocal part halfway though, the growling is awful to listen to.

Do they have any songs that are ALL "clean" (no growling at all)?

wtf dude? What's so bad about Tommy's growls? :\ Fair enough if you don't like them but maybe this band is not for you.

Good luck on finding ownage but different music like BTBAM.

If you don't like the growls, then you won't like the band.

The growls in BTBAM definately take a lil getting used to sometimes. I didnt like them when I first heard them, but I've grown accustomed to them and find them quite suitable for the music. Sometimes they're a bit monotonous (mostly in Colors honestly), but their still good.

My first ever listen to BTBAM was the Colors album. I really thought the album was great and I was definitely an instant fan of this band.

When I heard of the band name, I thought: "Between the buried and me? Sounds like some shitty depressing Metalcore band or something emo..". :lol

Yeah, that's what I fear - despite so many people saying how great they are, I just don't like growling at all. As far as growls go, I'm sure he's probably very top notch.

Thanks for the advice all.

Okay no worries then. In terms of growling, Tommy and Mikael Akerfeldt are my favourites and possibly are the best for growling in Prog. Metal.

I guess I'm late to the party here, but goddammit Obfuscation is an awesome song.  I hope the rest of the album is this good.

If it's anywhere near as epic as Colors, we're definitely in for a treat.

edit:  As for the growling subject, I think Tommy's growls are great.  He's not as good at enunciating the lyrics as, say Mikael Akerfeldt, but he has a very emotional growling style that I really love.

Saw them live tonight in Boston and they were ridiculous. The setlist was kind of short which was disappointing but the crowd got really into it for Selkies and White Walls. Tommy had laringitis so the crowd sang the clean part of Foam Born which was really awesome.

The In Flames set was almost identical to Zeltar's except they pulled out Only For The Weak which pumped everyone up. I don't really know many of their songs so I only recognized Alias. I was hoping they'd play Move Through Me, The Chosen Pessimist, Moonshield, or Goliaths Disarm Their Davids but whatever.

Wiki: Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It causes hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice because of irritation to the vocal folds (vocal cords).
Laryngitis is categorized as acute if it lasts less than a few days. Otherwise it is categorized as chronic, and may last over 3 weeks.
Damn, hope it's not chronic with Tommy.

BTBAM survivor has started, just to make people aware (I know someone asked about a survivor in here somewhere).

I'm going to run all the albums, and by the time they are all done, TGM should be out for a few weeks, so then I will run an early survivor for that, followed by consolation round and finals.

"The reciprocity of the ups and downs balances this album wonderfully. ‘Disease, Injury, Madness’ introduce the vocal melodic layering that exemplifies the bands complex simplicity; it’s oxymoronic framework that portrays a stunning equilibrium. Afterward, perhaps the most musically diverse segment from this album is displayed in the “Fossil Genera” track. It would be awkward to ignore the similarities to appropriately distinct, The Dillinger Escape Plan, especially regarding the timing structure, and guitar work. Here, some of the best dynamic progression is displayed in the album."

This sounds like a really stoned guy swooning over Dark Side of The Moon. I want a real review, not this vague shit.

I've heard most of the album but Disease, Injury, Madness is definitely the best that i've heard so far (i've yet to hear Desert of Song and Swim To The Moon).
