Round 6 first impressions

1. Feels like it could be one of those quintessential 7/10 albums. All sounded solid enough, but nothing excited me at all.

2. Interesting mix of different ideas, but not sure it does any of them all that well.

3. Not bad, and there’s some really good stuff, but also some not so interesting stuff, and it maybe drags a bit.

4. This might be a bit too much, but then there’s something intriguing about it. Didn’t love my first listen at all but can potentially see it being a grower.

5. Probably the strongest of the round on first listen, but I’m also not sure it has much scope to grow on me like some of the others do.

I think this is the first round certainly of this roulette, maybe of all my roulettes (except final rounds when there's only 2-3 people) where I genuinely have no idea how the ranking might end up looking. Could end up with all 5 albums getting the same rating.

the problem with concept albums is usually i can't pick the songs i really wanna send i have to pick the ones that fit the concept and aaaahhh

Conceptual/thematic narrative is only worth 5 points. Musical flow is worth another 5 and overall quality is worth 10. So I wouldn't recommend prioritising concept over the other things!

i looked at kingston park's genre and length and it's definitely #3. 1 & 5 could go either way, dunno for sure, but puppies' is definitely #2.

Ok I think I've decided a ranking. But I do want to give each album another listen as there's two or three I'm not entirely sure about rating. So results should be tomorrow evening.

SPOILER: This is certainly the weakest round in any of my album roulettes, possibly by quite a long way. Excellent work, chaps.

EDIT: Although because of my scoring system, this does mean some high scores for not very high rated albums!

EDIT 2: Oh and if you want round comparisons, it's v for everyone.

I really wish I could get into Warforged.. on paper it’s like exactly my kinda band, I just don’t feel it. But it’s super cool how much traction they’re getting given how small they are, we need more prog techdeath bands that don’t sing about stupid alien shit (yes RoS I’m looking at you)

Who's RoS and should I check them out

Warforged is the level of heavy I should hate but the riffs are generally good and they have so much else going on, the album feels like this elaborate piece of art that still feel like I haven't fully comprehended and that makes it very relistenable even if I can't consider it a top tier album yet

My rule this roulette has been just "have I obsessively spun this record" though so it qualifies
