I said we were getting better. I didn't say we were there yet.
I know they weren't human, but I think the Na'vi in Avatar have been the most convincing CGI main characters so far.
What do you mean "we"? You're not the one making it.
I think the fact Avatar wasn't human was still one of the biggest factors. People can recognize even the tiniest discrepancy when it comes to the human face, a lot of which is not an issue (or much less) for blue cat people despite being very humanoid. That includes the correct look of skin with sub surface scattering and pores, the complex muscle structure used for expression (although the mouthes were basically human and are probably the best I've seen), and the eyes, which are very hard to replicate to look alive, and perhaps the part of the face humans are most tuned to, being the first part of the face we focus on and recognize when we're young.
That's not to take anything away from Avatar, but not being human makes a huge difference at a sub-conscious level, which is why the uncanny valley so far still proves to be uncrossed in my opinion.
