Huey Lewis & the News - Heart and Soul

Another hit from Sports (there were so many!), I always liked this song, and the video was totally 80s fun.  It wasn't my favorite by them, or even from that record, but I still liked it.  Just not a favorite.  I remember my mom and dad both loving this song a lot when it was out.

Yep, another good one from Huey.  Not the best, but a good fun song.

If memory serves, and it may be wrong, MTV debuted the videos for both Heart And Soul by Huey Lewis and Mama by Genesis on the same night, an hour apart. Which is why, when people talk about Genesis going pop-and I made this comparison in the Genesis discography thread-I say that Genesis didn't really sound like a lot of pop bands, because look at what debuted on MTV the same night as Mama...this here Huey Lewis song.  :rollin

Good song, though. Huey Lewis and the News were a pretty reliable band there for a while, a bit of a 70s throwback rock act blending a modern sound to good old rock and roll.

Damn, if you remember that, you've got a great memory.  But you're right, Genesis pop still isn't the same as Huey Lewis pop.

Madonna - Live to Tell

I have to admit that this was the first Madonna song that I thought was really great.  Sure, I like a lot of her hits prior to this one, but this is one I thought was just a great song. And I remember the moment where I realized it.  I was sitting in the dentist's chair, waiting for my dentist to come in and do the cavity check following my cleaning, and in that time, a radio that was on in the next room was just loud enough for me to hear, Live to Tell was playing, and it just sounded like a great song to me in the state I was in at the time.  Top that, Jaq!

My memory of the 80s is a bit scattershot...and let's not talk about the second half of 1990, that was a bad time for me...but for some reason, as this thread has made abundantly clear, I can tie a lot of memory to MTV.  :lol

Elton John - Sad Songs (Say So Much)

Good, solid song, and I remember the video being a lot of fun, too, although I haven't seen it in a long time.  I have never been a big Elton fan, but I liked a handful of his 80s hits.  It could be that, relatively speaking, they compared favorably to some of the bad 80s stuff, while his 70s stuff sounds so tame compared to so much of the awesome classic rock of that decade; hard to say.  But I just know I have always liked this song quite a bit. :tup :tup

I submit to you the album Goodbye Yellowbrick Road to refute the notion that Elton John couldn't rock in the 70s. If anything I have the opposite opinion of his 80s work, which is really when he became a rather safe adult contemporary act.  :lol

I didn't say he couldn't rock; I just meant that his best stuff from the 70s paled in comparison, IMO, to much of the other classic rock of the same time period.  "Tame" was probably the wrong word to use.

And I have owned Goodbye Yellow Brick Road for almost 20 years. :hat

We have different definitions of what rocked in the 70s then.

John Mellencamp - Crumbin' Down

Another hit from Uh-Huh, this was probably my least favorite of the three hits from it at the time, but I probably like it more than Authority Song now.  Good, quality song, and as for the video...well, it's a good thing he didn't try to make a career out of being a dancer. :lol

Billy Joel - Allentown

Not one of my favorites from the album it's on, but not a terrible song either.

Huey Lewis & the News - Heart and Soul

Good, fun song.

Elton John - Sad Songs (Say So Much)

Older EJ > 80s EJ.
I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues I like a tad better

Yeah, me too.

John Mellencamp - Crumbin' Down

Fixed the last name misspell for ya.  Great song. :metal

I've said it before in this thread, but I liked energetic rocker John Cougar far better than earnest, socially conscious John Mellencamp. Far, far better. This song does nothing to convince me I'm mistaken.  :lol

I completely agree. That's why my favorite about is Whenever We wanted.  Straight on rock album for him.

Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime

I have always been mesmerized by both this song and the video; both are absolutely amazing. Talking Heads are not everyone's cup of tea, and even as a kid, I thought they were a little weird - David Byrne's quirky on-screen persona mostly being the reason - but that weirdness was a big reason why their songs were so good and their videos so entertaining.

Real quirky but just enough hook to make it damn catchy.  But the video......what the hell?! :lol

Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You

I know a lot of Journey fans aren't wild about the hits from the Raised on Radio record, but I always liked this song quite a bit, and I still do; good, solid song.  I am not always a huge fan of him as a vocalist - I think he overdoes it at times, and don't worship him like a lot of people do - but Steve Perry's vocals are pretty dynamite in this tune.  All I remember about the video are two things: 1) it was an actual live version, and 2) Perry's hairdo was absolutely ridiculous. :lol

To this day, the presence of American Idol's Randy Jackson on this album and tour makes me want to see someone he judges poorly on the show to say "what the hell do you know, you were in Fake Journey!"  :lol Which sums up what a lot of long time Journey fans thought of this album. It wasn't Journey, it was Steve Perry with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain along for the ride.

I'm a big Journey fan (I actually just saw them live last Saturday :hat), but I don't know/like anything from this album, aside from Be Good To Yourself, which I don't mind.

I just checked it out again though, and the vocals are great, and it's a decent song, but nothing great. And whoa, Perry's hairstyle instantly tells you which half of the '80s it was. :lol

Ah, the Steve Perry solo album.  I KID!!  3 songs including this one are great and the rest is 80's sounding shlock.

I really like this song, but I prefer the studio version to the video's live performance.  The studio version is a lot more laid back.  It has a cool vibe.

Perry should have auditioned for Heart looking like that!

I'm a big Journey fan too, and didn't like this album at all for many years. Eventually I warmed up to it though, after maybe...8 or 10 years? It's still very far from being my favourite Journey album, but I do actually like most of the songs on it now.

This particular song is definitely one of the better ones from the album, for me, and for most of the period I did not listen to the album I still liked this song. It was actually part of the Best-Of compilation that got me into the band in the first place, so that's probably why.

ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man

For whatever reason, I didn't like this song nearly as much as I did the other major hits from the Eliminator album (Legs and Gimme All Your Lovin').  I mean, this is a good song, but it wasn't one that I couldn't not watch if it came on; maybe the video not being as memorable as the others didn't help.  Hard to say, but it's still a solid tune.
