In fact, this song was downright annoying to me.

Agreed.  Still is.

Violator...most of which is quite good

Also agreed.  This band was VERY hit and miss for me.  I either REALLY liked their songs or REALLY disliked them, depending on the song.  I found most of Violated to be very good.  Excellent driving music.

I'm gonna steal Debra's gimmick for this one:

A quintessential 80s dance song that I think still holds up well today (for what it is). Probably my favorite of theirs - which isn't saying much, as I never got in to them.

I'm not a fan of 80s synth pop in general, but Depeche Mode is an exception to this rule. They have many great albums, and Violator is among their very best. Personal Jesus is a nice track with a cool guitar riff.

Some of there stuff is pretty catchy, with the synthy percussion or whatever that is, but they've never really overwhelmed me.

As for the song today.... like Mister Shmevin, I didn't dig on it much at the time but dug on it more the first time I actually listened to Violator (borrowed from a co-worker and then subsequently bought).  I will say that I dig Policy of Truth much better, but... I'll take Personal Jesus.  Floater does an AWESOME cover of it, I understand.

Oh, um... goils, booze, underpants. :lol

Never been a big fan of Depeche Mode.  I just don't like that style of music.  I was more of a Simple Minds and The Fixx kind of guy.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand

Even though I was never a fan of rap, I did like this song a lot back in 1988.  It had enough humor to be likable, and the video showed the charisma that would eventually help make Will Smith a big movie star.  I don't really listen to this song anymore, but I did know every word to it back in the day. :eek :eek :lol :lol

While I really didn't expect Will Smith to become the movie star he turned out to be, watching this video once was enough to tell me he was going to be huge. I just figured it'd be in music.  :lol

Just a great, humorous, rap song. This is the kind of rap that I enjoy.

Most rap bugs me, but Will's laid-back style and easy, almost conversational tone works for me.  I thought this was a fun song.

Duran Duran - Skin Trade

This 1986 hit was a bit different for them, but I liked it.  I don't think it was that big of a hit, IIRC, but I think it was one of their best hits of the later 80s.

Parents Just Don't Understand was pretty cool, for rap lite.

While I really didn't expect Will Smith to become the movie star he turned out to be, watching this video once was enough to tell me he was going to be huge. I just figured it'd be in music.  :lol

I think a LOT of people thought that back then.

Duran Duran - Skin Trade

I had to pull up YouTube for this one.  Never heard it.  Okay enough, I guess.  The title track is the one I remember the most though.

Notorious was something of a trainwreck of an album for Duran Duran, and they really didn't recover until Ordinary World became a hit. I always thought the success of the Power Station really wrecked the roll Duran Duran was on in the 80s. Skin Trade didn't quite sink without a trace, but man it came close.  :rollin

The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays

Okay, it's technically a 1979 song, but it was played a lot in the early MTV days, so it is easy to associate it as being an 80s tune (just like Video Killed the Radio Star).  Anyway, kind of an unusual song, but one that is oddly catchy.  It was never really on my radar back then, but when going through and collecting all relevant 80s tunes for my music collection years ago, that song was brought to my attention and I was like, "Yeah, that's a cool song," so I grabbed it and liked it quite a bit.  The video is good, cheeky fun, too.  Some of Bob Geldoff's clothes crack me up. :lol

I always thought this song was just about a guy who don't like Mondays, but then I read that it's about a shooting spree of a 16-year old girl. (Granted, I don't pay attention to lyrics)

It's a catchy little song, haven't seen the video for it though.

Very memorable song.  I learned to play it on the piano by ear.  The first part was easy.  The rest, not so much (for a 10 year old).

Great song, one of my ten favorite songs ever. It's the only Boomtown Rats song I like-I have a feeling that's the case with a lot of people-and is just such a strange, quirky song, the fact that it became a hit kind of amazes me. The video, of course, is one of those videos that looks just plain silly today, but it was one of the first videos where the band did more than just play the song in a studio, so it deserves a little slack.

Very memorable song.  I learned to play it on the piano by ear.  The first part was easy.  The rest, not so much (for a 10 year old).

I remember watching someone doing the descending glissandos in the intro one time, and thinking to myself how amazing that sounded, and it was actually super easy.  Stay on the black keys, you've got yourself a nice mellow Gb6+9, but slam a low Eb, and suddenly it's an Ebm7.  I was 15 and probably had a bit more experience than you did at 10, so once I'd figured out how the intro worked, picking out the rest of it wasn't too bad.

The piano break is cool, but the something about the way it comes out of nowhere always reminded me of Springsteen.

Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams

Major one-hit wonder here.  Enjoyable song at the time, and it still has a nice hook, but while it's on my 80s playlist, it usually gets the skip treatment if it happens to pup up.  The video was not memorable to me at all.
