I really enjoyed the intro, bridge (good vocal melodies and vibe), the instrumental section and the outro. But when the verses aren't that great, and the chorus is weak, it's just not a good song. Nonetheless, the musical ideas in the good parts make me curious about the rest of the album.

By the way, I liked SymX even better when they had shitty production with too much reverb. It's just right for them. 'V' is just epic sounding. I'm still glad (judging from the stream) that it isn't as uber-smacked as 'Paradise Lost' was. It doesn't feel like I'm getting stabbed by MJR's guitar anymore, great.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

As long as they keep The Odyssey I'm happy.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

I've seen it once, and I'm glad they did it because it was new to me. But yeah, Divine Wings or Accolade 1 & 2 seem l ike they'd be epic closers as well.

I must say this one sounded a bit generic SX, but it had some curveballs it threw me. I liked it, but there will be better songs on the album.

I have hopes for a good album, but not hoping for something as epic as V or Divine Wings.

I heard two more songs from the album through a friend (Iconoclast, When All is Lost) and they were better than what we've heard so far. Not their best, imo, but I think a lot of you guys will love them. Iconoclast sounds like a mixed version of something from PL and The Divine... but it resembles more the latter.

Forgot to post that I saw Symphony X at Peabodys this last Friday! Awesome! The Oddysey kicked ass, and I got to talk to Russell Allen for a few minutes - super nice guy. I'll post some vids later.

Attended the Chicago show on Sunday, and I was reminded exactly why I consider Symphony X to be one of the premier live acts of their generation.  That band was just spot on all night long; Russ was a beast, and the other guys were all playing top notch.  My only real complaint about the performance itself is that the lower register keys seems to be mixed with way to much distortion, but it was really only an issue in a couple of places.  The crowd was with them the whole night, and audience participation in Paradise Lost and the Odyssey was awesome.

As for the setlist, as follows:

Oculus Ex Inferni
Sins and Shadows
Domination
Serpent's Kiss
End of Innocence
Paradise Lost
Smoke and Mirrors
Eve of Seduction
Dehumanized
Set the World On Fire

- Encore -
The Odyssey

Over all a very solid setlist, and of course, every song was played to perfection.  With that said, I do have a couple issues with the set:

1) Since this was more of a general Symphony X tour, rather then in support of a particular album, I wish the setlist had been less PL heavy with a wider variety of material.  I love that album, but to see their earlier works so marginalized was a bit irritating.

2)  The Odyssey is amazing as an encore, I get that, but this is the third time I've seen it live.  From what I understand, Divine Wings hasn't been played in it's entirety since the V tour, and since I like that song more then the Odyssey, I would appreciate it if they dusted it off and brought it back.

Overall, though, fucking amazing show!  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

From what I understand, when Nevermore and Soilwork dropped out of the tour, Symphony X decided to extend the lengths of their set. They were probably pretty familiar with a lot of the Paradise Lost songs from the previous tour, so I'd say it's probably likely that they just pulled from those so it'd be easier.

Not expertly written, by any means. And it's clearly come from a heavy metal fan.  But interesting nonetheless. I quote:

“Iconoclast” is plain and simple the best Symphony X album of their brilliant career.

Either way, i'm happy. I love the heavyness of SX.  :metal

Great to see positive reviews - looks like a lot of heavy songs. That's good but I'm mainly looking forward to Iconoclast, Children Of A Faceless God and When All Is Lost based on the descriptions.

Don't think this has been posted here.
