Attended the Chicago show on Sunday, and I was reminded exactly why I consider Symphony X to be one of the premier live acts of their generation. That band was just spot on all night long; Russ was a beast, and the other guys were all playing top notch. My only real complaint about the performance itself is that the lower register keys seems to be mixed with way to much distortion, but it was really only an issue in a couple of places. The crowd was with them the whole night, and audience participation in Paradise Lost and the Odyssey was awesome.
As for the setlist, as follows:
Oculus Ex Inferni
Sins and Shadows
Domination
Serpent's Kiss
End of Innocence
Paradise Lost
Smoke and Mirrors
Eve of Seduction
Dehumanized
Set the World On Fire
- Encore -
The Odyssey
Over all a very solid setlist, and of course, every song was played to perfection. With that said, I do have a couple issues with the set:
1) Since this was more of a general Symphony X tour, rather then in support of a particular album, I wish the setlist had been less PL heavy with a wider variety of material. I love that album, but to see their earlier works so marginalized was a bit irritating.
2) The Odyssey is amazing as an encore, I get that, but this is the third time I've seen it live. From what I understand, Divine Wings hasn't been played in it's entirety since the V tour, and since I like that song more then the Odyssey, I would appreciate it if they dusted it off and brought it back.
Overall, though, fucking amazing show!
