Well, look at it this way, it's 2 months until the actual album comes out. But there's still plenty of exciting news to come between now and the album. Like DT's North American tour schedule. And the actual album itself, which we still don't know how many different types of editions it's gonna come in, I'm really hoping they'll pull a Silver Linings with this, and make like, an ultra deluxe edition for the hardcore fans.

a limited edition that contains a lock of JLB's hair???
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Pain of Salvation already covered human hair as a bonus track.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you were to compare OTBOA's opening arpeggios to TGP's opening arpeggios, the former wins. It gets me all pumped for the rest of the song (and album). Sure, TGP's arpeggios are beloved by fans, but I betcha that in 5 years time, OTBOA's intro will be the preferred set of arpeggios that kicked off their respective albums.

What arpeggios?

The clean guitar arpeggios that begin the song.

The guitar that comes in at 0:15 is most definitely an arpeggio.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Indeed they are, however they aren't in the least bit similar to TGP solo arps, so I have no idea why they're being compared.

Well there are some broken chords in that lick, but it didn't think arpeggios were the main idea of the those phrases.

My mistake then.

My bad. I guess acoustic guitar section would make more sense than arpeggios. The reason why I compared them because they open up their respective albums similarly - an acoustic guitar section paving the way for the heaviness.

@nikatapi. "On the Backs of Angels" from Dream Theater is released August 9. Order deluxe now to for auto-delivery that day.

Cant wait for a good quality mp3 or even better lossless format!

That song is seriously incredible. I've been listening to it for so many times and I still LOVE it. It also rocked live.

I just listened to the song in Dream Theater's official youtube channel and it sounds a lot better to me. Don't know if its just me, since I haven't listened to the song in a while.

Wait, you're comparing the intro of The Glass Prison to On The Backs of Angels...and acoustic guitar is being mentioned. There is no acoustic guitar anywhere near TGP.

Oh crikey, aye. I do kind of "get" how it could be mistaken for acoustic guitar, p'raps... but yeah, TGP intro is bass.

Indeed. The quality is considerably better. The sound is much more full and clear :)

Yeah the DT Youtube version sounds WAAAAAY better. The RR version was off putting a bit and I couldn't appreciate the song fully.

As far as I can tell, it is slightly better, but more sound is still coming through the right channel than the left. I wonder why that is?

Didn't notice that on my part. Maybe your panning settings are off?

Here's roughly the harmonic path On the Backs of Angels go;

‎0:00-3:55 Em
3:56-4:23 Am
4:23-5:22 Em
5:23-5:50 Am
5:51-6:56 Em
6:57-7:48 Am
7:49-8:35 Em

I would expect it to be a little bit more colorful, or maybe they did this on purpose to have a cold feeling overall?

WOW.  It's seriously much much better.  Every instrument is clearer and sits better in the overall mix.

I'll tell you what I like the most about this song: the instrumentals don't sound like wankery.  I've gotten so used to those guitar-keyboard tradeoffs, and maybe they're actually in there, but I don't notice them if they are because they don't sound the way they have for the last four albums.
