Holy crap, the  Jeckyll and Hyde pre-chorus drum pattern sounds fat and downright amazing.

I'm enjoying the album.  I agree that some of the songs have a "sameyness" sound.  It would've been nice to mix in an acoustic tune or a piano tune just to break it up.  Also, I'm a little susprised that this style of music and the screamy vocals is something that appeals to JLB.  I just didn't think that would be his cup of tea.  I'm not sure why, I just assumed that I guess.  Can't wait to see him live next month!

I am in the midst of my first listen and Im very surprised with how good this album is.  I say that because I dont like the screaming vocals very much, but JLB is really good on this album and makes the screaming vocals not so bad.  Songs are very catchy too. Not sure if its better than EoP yet, but I like it a lot after almost one full listen.

You remind me of me. When I was 11. :) The album rocks! (although I want to hear the more "awakey" type of singing JLB originally had in mind too).

CJS said that he was initially going to sing those parts in an Awake-like growl.  Personally, I love the way he sings on Awake more than any other album.  I would have much preferred that than what they went with.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. It would have been interesting to hear some demos this way though.

Yeah, he said "Awake-style voice/singing", not "growl". He never growled in Awake...

Either way, he really sounds like Awake in a major part of this album, a few extra vocal lines wouldn't change a thing imo, plus I'm already used to the screams.

I think people who don't like growling should just get over themselves really.

I mean, how can you all like Opeth without liking growls?

I don't see any reason why I should "get over myself" because there's something I don't like.  I haven't chosen to dislike it, because there's no such thing as controlling your personal taste.  I don't pretend not to like it, for any reason.  I just don't like it because I don't like how it sounds.  It's as simple as that.

Is there any kind of music, or any kind of vocals, or any particular musical instrument, that you just plain don't like the sound of?  You should just get over yourself really.

Death metal is really an acquired taste, like a bitter cup of coffee.  It takes a gradual easing into, which is why Static Impulse, Opeth, or any other mixture between clean and death is a great place to start.

Rob, you might hate it now, but that could easily change.  Are there any tracks on Static Impulse that you do like?  (other than the ballad)

Who wrote the lyrics on the album?  It doesn't say in the booklet.  It doesn't seem like JLB lyrics to me.

I'm pretty sure the booklet is arranged in a "Music/Lyrics" kinda way. I'd guess Matt did the music and James did the lyrics, except for Celebrity, where James did both. Or they collaborated. I will say that it IS a bit vague.

Pretty sure James said in an interview that he and Matt split the lyrics half and half, while the music was more organic and collaborative.

Yea, I assumed they split lyric duties.  There just seems like there are some lyric parts that don't seem LaBrie-like.  Not that the lyrics are bad, but not as good as lyrics in "Vacant" and other LaBrie-penned lyrics.  And whenever I hear him sing "caged in with all the crackheads" in the song "I Need You," it doesn't feel like something he would write.  But who knows!

Actually, I should revise it. It's just weird because most the songs are credited as "Gulliory/LaBrie," whereas this one is "LaBrie/Gulliory"

No dude, that's not what I was laughing at, I fully knew what you were saying with the credits, I was laughing at how you called the song 'Celebrity' when it's called 'Superstar.'  No offense at all, that just gave me a chuckle.

J&H is one of my bottom 3 of this album, I guess that shows how strong it is.

Ranking;

1. I Need You
2. Mislead
3. Over The Edge
4. One More Time
5. Euphoric
6. Just Watch Me
7. I Tried
8. Superstar
9. Who You Think I Am
10. Jekyll or Hyde
11. This Is War
12. Coming Home

This changes often though.
