Tour.

Need.

Now.

OMG.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I like the I Will Not Break EP, it's a pretty good compilation for a person who hasn't gotten the bonus editions of the previous two albums, and the remixes are usually thrown in as more of a curiosity than anything, unless the band has some sort of a remix culture going on, which is more common with indie rock bands.

What gets me pumped about the next EP (lol, it's more than a year away and we already started talking about it) is that bands nowadays usually try and make them especially special (or even thematic sometimes!) when they make them as breathers between albums or, as Blob said, fresh reasons for a tour. So, being a modern band following modern trends, maybe the guys will try to spice this release up a little bit ;) not that the albums so far weren't fabulously spicy, but I'd love to see some deviation from the norm, like a fully acoustic power ballad, or an unorthodox cover of a modern band, or something completely pop, or something even heavier than SI, or all that on the same EP.

I'm sure Matt's solo album will make the wait until the tour even shorter, too :metal really looking forward to that.

There had better be at least one dubstep song.

And an acoustic death metal song with James on vocals.

Have we heard anything about his solo album? I heard some of the guide vocal tracks he did, and his voice is fantastic, I'd love to hear a full release with just him singing (no disrespect to James, of course).

Matt said a couple pages back he's been working on it, and James also mentioned it in the Shockwave interview, but we haven't got any more info than that. I hope Matt will check in when it's time to break the news, I'd like to see it somewhere in the third quarter of 2014 :hat

Interesting, I wonder what kind of style it will be. Something more rock/metal or perhaps more pop/electronic influenced? Something to look out for for sure.

I'm also really looking forward to Matt's album and the EP. I could see them stepping in a different direction for the EP, considering it would probably only be 4-7 songs, or it could just be another evolutionary step in the style they already do, which would be fine by me, as I'm sure it will be awesome anyway. :metal

^ Slightly Out of Reach is a top 3 JLB song for me :heart

Matt has uploaded a 1½-minute clip of a demo song he wrote in 2007 to YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9KjbTa4MI0 No idea if it's going to be on the solo album (or if it's indicative of the direction), but it sounds good.

Indeed, I am currently writing songs for it. I'm funding the solo album myself, so I'm taking my time with it. (Kinda nice not to have so much pressure!) That said, I do want to release it relatively soon. Marco, Ray, and Peter will be my backing band. (That was always the plan) There might be a couple of special guests though. ;)

Over a month ago, I posted a 30 second preview of a new song on my Facebook page. (It's not on YouTube)

Cheers!

I made a Spotify playlist of my all time favourite James LaBrie songs!

Agony
Undertow
Venice Burning
Lost In The Fire
Euphoric
Slight Of Hand
Afterlife
Over The Edge
Confronting The Devil
Listening

The order of the songs does not mirror my order of preference, it's just the way I think the playlist work best for me. If I had to choose my favourite song of the lot it would be a tough match between Venice, Devil, Fire and Agony!

Who wrote which lyrics on IR? I can't find it anywhere, but I don't actually have the album, so I don't know if it says in there. I gotta say, the album is not bad (still don't think it's great), but some the lyrics are pretty freaking terrible.

Mainly Matt, but James on a few I think.  I think it states the credits in the album booklet if you purchase the album.

Could somebody list what lyrics are written by who?

As far as the lyrics go...

01: Agony (LaBrie)
02: Undertow (Guillory)
03: Slight Of Hand (LaBrie)
04: Back On The Ground (Guillory)
05: I Got You (Guillory)
06: Holding On (Guillory)
07: Lost In The Fire (Guillory/Lundin)
08: Letting Go (LaBrie)
09: Destined To Burn (LaBrie)
10: Say You're Still Mine (Lundin)
11: Amnesia (Guillory)
12: I Will Not Break (LaBrie)

Bonus Tracks:

13: Unraveling (Guillory/Lundin)
14: Why (Guillory)

I haven't listened to the album for a while actually, will need to give it a spin tomorrow  :metal

By the way, is this thread IR-oriented or can we talk about JLB's solo work in general? Cause I'm still enjoying that one playlist I posted a few months ago! :D

This is the general JLB thread (check the first page - everyone's talking about the "new" album, Static Impulse). It's just got Impermanent Resonance in the title because that's the latest release. :P

Dang I was really hoping LaBrie wasn't at fault for the terrible lyrics on Destined To Burn.  :-[

At least he didn't come up with "Just not on Vennuuusss, Come on, Come on"

Kiitos! :tup I could guess some of those based on James and Matt's writing styles and what songs James discussed in interviews upon the album's release. After reading that someone had interpreted Euphoric as a song about James being into overweight girls, I've found it hard to take the lyrics 100% seriously :lol
I've never had a problem with any of the lyrics.
Me either. A couple of lines in a few songs are kind of cheesy, but the music is so strong that I don't care. Poetic lyrics would feel out of place in this kind of straightforward, poppy metal anyway.
