Gave this album a listen this morning. Couple observations:

- The drums are too loud (something I normally wouldn't say as I love listening to the drums)
- It sounds like Lars is playing on this album
- The kick sounds like the snare
- I could play the drums on this album
- This would be a great album for Rock Band
- Why is the singer singing like Axl Rose?
- Holy shit, I actually listened to a full Avenged Sevenfold album.

Loving the album. Not as good as Nightmare, but better than the self titled release.

And any complaints about the simple drum work is negated by my fanboyish love for Syn's guitar work and Shadows vocals. Which by the way may be his best vocal performance yet.

I agree about the vocals. Shadows owns this album.

Nothing will ever touch the selftitled.

- Why is the singer singing like Axl Rose?
He's been doing the Axl Rose impression for years, but now the music sounds like GNR too, for once.

Well, after a few days of absorbing and re-listening to some songs of the album, I can still say it is a winner.  They are doing a good job, and all we can say is keep going.

That said, I had a couple listens at St. James.  My goodness, this is a great song.  A good positive high-energy song with a great story to the creation of the song and it sounds like vintage Avenged Sevenfold.

I couldn't describe it better.
This album is just different. But IMO, in a very very good way.

I'll explain with some points:
  • The guitar solos are less technical, which leaves Syn with more melodic space to work with. Listen, for example, to Acid Rain's solo. It's just wonderful. Not too complicated, but one of my favorites. In previous albums the solos we're just too technical (with some exceptionals, of course).
  • M. Shadows vox are AWESOME. He finally managed to balance his powerful screaming with his silent melodic parts. He's definitely the highlight of the album
  • I agree about the drums being simple as hell.
  • The composition in the album is brilliant. Something that really bothered me in ths S/T album, and it may sound petty, is that most of the songs (if not all of them) were in ONE scale (Dminor). Something like that creates a similar atmosphere in all the songs. This album is written in different ones, and therefore we have wider range of sounds

That's it  ;D

After some days of absorbing I think I can say this:

It's a good album, but below all the previous four. I really miss the longer proggier songs like MIA, ALPOH and Save Me. However, it will probably be a kickass album to hear when I see them live in november :metal

I'm really liking St. James. Should not have been a "bonus track." But I think it's usually the label that pushes that kind of stuff these days.

Overall impressions I get from the album...

As I said before Shadows really steals the show.

The drums are simple but powerful and have a great dense sound.

I keep going back and forth between Coming Home and Planets as my best song pick.

The title track keeps getting better with each listen.

Doing Time continues the tradition of the shortest song being one of the best.

Nice to hear more bass in the mix finally.

Digging these videos where the band briefly talks about each song.

I'm really liking this album so far. Haven't listened enough to be able to recall any songs but my first impressions are its the best since City of Evil.

Also, listening on my nice headphones, the album sounds great.

Woke up from Revolt on The Rio day 1 and they were good, but Korn shouldve headlined.

New songs were amazing....they didn't play Bat Country or Beast and The Harlot, which is a first that a band didn't play their hits. Good show though.

Just watched the videos for Planets and Acid Rain. Like how the band confirmed that they go together. Definitely in the top three for me along with Requiem.

First listen - Meh, sorry A7X but meh.
Second listen - Okay, I'm liking this a bit more now that I'm more familiar with what's going on. Not bad, A7X.
Third listen -  :metal :metal :metal

I don't really care for Crimson Day all that much. Just seems very by the numbers as far as the "slow" track goes. And the chorus to Planets bothered me the first listen, but it's growing on me.

Requiem and Shepard of Fire are all kinds of badass though. Also Coming Home, which sounds very Iron Maiden influenced.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Being an A7X fan....I was shocked to hear how dumbed down the drums are, especially for a drummer as talented as he is.  The drums on Crimson Day are so lifeless they sound programmed.  I can appreciate going more for feel rather than spectacle, but on this record it's a little too deliberate.

The album is really good.  I dont care if the drums are dumbed down, the songs are great and its a pretty damn heavy album.  Very awesome that something like this made #1.

I've been giving the album a few listens as of late, and I actually really dig it.  Very much more straight up metal than metal core-ish.  I don't know, I dig it.

Shadows vocals are ABSOLUTELY STELLAR on this album, too.  Really great to hear.
