I have one criticism. What's with the character's face in the first panel? I don't know, it feels really...empty and expressionless if you ask me.

Eh, maybe. I don't think much emotion was demanded in that panel. It's kind of like how I like to leave out punctuation in sentences. It has a certain affect.
It's not really...the emotion I'm worried about for this comic specifically. But I don't know, the face kind of feels like it...isn't a face. It's cool if you like it that way, it's your comic and all. But it was just something I noticed.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

As a person who played and loved LoZ:MM when it came out on the 64, this comic made me laugh heartily  :lol
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

One of my biggest regrets in life (despite being a pretty big N64 gamer) was never playing that game.

PLEASE DON'T HATE ME
Ack, prefer that it's not too OTT with expressions myself.

Looks too cluttered if there are too many joke faces competing for space. And the deadpan first three panels gives the final panel far more oomph as a punchline. The rough premise of a joke is to build up one expectation and then sort of tug it away. Non-sequiturs can work, but if you've got no meter of normality, the abnormality doesn't really work as well. So I think the relative realism (by cartoony standards, natch) of the first three makes the final panel work a lot better.

I never even owned an N64. I did really want one but I never got it. But I've caught up now, and played both OoT and MM! YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

Yeah I'd never really thought about that until I was watching QI and Jimmy Carr was talking about it, and it's so true.

You know, as I was looking through my archive on my hard drive and was like, "oh man, I remember that era of doing comics like that" and it seemed so archaic and old and embarrassing, then I realized it was, like, three months ago. So hopefully that shows how my desire to improve is making me better with every comic.

Sonata, I have some questions for you. I'm curious because I've read about this - the author was about 23, 24, at the time - and been told about this in person too before, I don't know if it's an insecurity problem with people. So, here goes --

Are you comfortable with anyone praising every little bit of work you do?
Do you get tired of the "wow, you're a great comic artist! etc." statements from people?
Is it tiring to thank almost everyone?
Are you used to the praise you have now?
Does it keep you motivated? And if so, can it go the opposite, and instead, make you feel down?

I've dealt with issues like these before, and every time someone hears or sees me play guitar, half the time I get commented on and I like it that way. I don't wonder why some people don't comment, I just do my thing and move on. If I get praise, I usually don't say anything back, because I sort of get it. Ya know?

Good questions.

Are you comfortable with anyone praising every little bit of work you do?

Hey, if someone feels in such a way about something I make that they wish to express it, I'm comfortable with them saying so. To be honest, I'm not very comfortable with some of the praise sometimes because I honestly think I'm going to be a work in progress my entire life and that I may never make a comic that I'm 100% happy with.

I don't get too many of those, actually. I get such things about the comics, but not of myself as an artist. And I think I like it better that way as I certainly don't think I rank amongst the people I consider to be great comic artists myself.

Quote
Is it tiring to thank almost everyone?

Sometimes if I don't feel all that great about a comic and it's been complimented, but if someone has taken the time to tell me something nice then I'm glad to thank them for it.

Quote

A bit, but I'm always working to get better so that the praise may one day be justified by quality.

In part, yes. I mean, I wouldn't have even gone past the first comic if I didn't have encouragement. But really I'm my own worst critic and I can get really down on myself sometimes if I'm not happy with what I make, and I really never am happy with it for long.

Thanks for the response, man.

That's fair, because fans can comment out of their freewill.

Cool, and for me I don't mind it at all that way. We know what we know, and so we just have to not feel bad about being worse in comparison to people in your field of hobby. It's all fun in the end.

I agree, I prefer the more elaborate responses to be given more often.

It is impossible to not get better. We all make our mistakes and we learn off of them. Inspiration is also key.

Hey, that's natural. We're human beings and so you hear about people being sick of fame. Sometimes, you have to pretend you're not as "big" as you are, like the time you were new to your hobby and you've shown one or two people your creations. Depending on what's happening with you, you probably have to end up re-evaluating the things that inspire you, to see if you can push further and make some of the best creations from your heart.

I may have rambled a bit, but :tup cheers.
