DT now tied passed Miley Cyrus at 38%! Keep up the votes and lets send a message to Grammy.com and the masses that DT shouldn't be ignored!
Why are people giving Miley Cyrus the time of day? Isn't it obvious she's trying too hard to be controversial and get attention?
Who cares about new great music when Miley Cyrus was twerking! TWERKING!!!! It's cataclysmic!

I'd say I'm very confident DT is not going to win.
lol DT has no hope of even coming close in this. Besides DT fans, anyone who looks at this is going to be like "what's a Dream Theater?"
Get a load of the competition:

I doubt that DT will win as well, but I think voting and beating anything on that list and putting a decent % up on the board shows the masses that DT is relevant and shouldn't be ignored. If it catches anyones attention in the end by someone saying "Dream Theater beat Taylor Swifts CMA nod? Who the hell is DT?" Maybe, just maybe, DT will make some people curious and earn them a few more fans and recognition.

Highly doubtful since DT caters to a relatively narrow market. Grammy.com caters to lots of people, most of whom probably would not have any interest in the things that DT offers.
What's interesting about the masses and the crowd that Grammy attracts is that they are extremely impressionable and in a lot of cases will follow whatever is trending. Now, lol, I don't expect anything at all of course, but I guarantee you if DT were to be advertised as some of these others are, you would see a bit of popularity gain.
Imagine if Beiber or Cyrus were to do an interview and they said "Oh you guys gotta check out my friends in Dream Theater, they're pretty dope." Or if some celebrities were sporting a magesty logo shirt and the paparazzis made a big deal out of, or if DT were sponsored by some big brand labels in commercials. A lot of people are just interested in what's trending and don't actually care much about the substance behind what they're following. Could you imagine a beer commercial during the Super Bowl that showed JP lifting an entire keg of beer over his head and chugging it? Nothing but that. 30 seconds he kills the entire thing and throws down the empty keg on the ground. When finished, he crosses his arms and the scene cuts to a black background with the beer logo.

Lol. JP lifting a beer keg over his head would indeed make for a great commercial for any occasion.

As for the whole "Imagine if Beiber or Cyrus were to do an interview and they said "Oh you guys gotta check out my friends in Dream Theater, they're pretty dope."", even if that would bring good press to DT, you guys are such a close tight-knit family that you would not, subconsciously, accept those people into your family, very easily.
That said, you had great intention when you thought about that idea, if it does actually happen, it's not going to result in a way that you expect however.

DT's too mainstream now.. Bye guys.
James doesn't even have a thigh gap anyway, so I couldn't possibly enjoy their new music.
And DT is all technical with no emotion, people can't relate, so they won't win.

God, yes. And please, let him ride his unicycle with a pixelated face in the countryside. That's an amazing lyric video right there, and worthy spiritual successor of the TEI video.

PS: we're waaaay ahead of Katy Perry!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only 16 percentage points behind Miley. C'mon guys, we can do it. Time to teach the teenagers of the world some of it's cruel realities and kick Miley's skinny ass to the curb!!!!
Currently in 2nd with 27%.

that's exactly what was happening to me on Safari. I was however able to vote on the homepage, but only once. So I went to firefox and it's letting me vote a bunch

Don't be so rude. Honestly, believe what you want about the music, but the vast majority of KP and MC fan posts are more respectful than what you just posted. While Miley's video is just awful, the song actually isn't bad (I personally don't care for it, but I can see why those who enjoy pop music more than I do would like it). And there is
plenty to like about the KP song and the video, whether you can subjectively identify with it or not. The DT love is obviously appreciated, but don't be such a snob just because you happen to dislike a particular style.

I definitely agree with Bosk. If you go to the General Music Discussion here, you will find that many people here like pop (including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc.).
Hell, I've seen Katy Perry live! My favorite band is Dream Theater, and all of my big favorites are prog and/or metal, but just like Dream Theater's music, my tastes aren't one-dimensional.

I dislike pop and all it stands for because what it does stand for is completely wrong, all pop videos are is 99% naked women, I understand what you mean but pop music has completely destroyed the whole creative and musical side of music.
I agree I could have done a better job wording my previous post and I apologise for that but, I know that what I stand for is correct, as a comment said on this poll "Bring Musicians back into music"
If Katy Perrys music was so about the music then she wouldn't have to lie half naked in a video (Teenage Dream) or whatever its where she is squirting fire out of her boobs.
Pop is not real music, it's sex sold to subjective youngsters.
That's all a bit harsh. Maybe you need to explore the pop genre a bit more because that's not what it's all about

How old are you? 15?
I've grown up with it constantly blaring down my ears whether it being in school or radio or just friends, I've stated my opinions and they will stay that way, if anyone cares to discuss this further I'm a PM away because this is getting a bit off topic, but if you wish to PM, go ahead.
And no, I'm 17. Not that it matters....
I don't disagree with your larger point about some pop (and other music as well) being exploitive and marketing sex to youngsters. But (1) just because a lot of pop may fit that category doesn't mean that all of it is, and (2) again, the actual song and video in question are actually quite good. In general, I don't really like KP at all. A big reason is some of the stuff you mentioned. But have you actually watched the video in question or listened to the song?
EDIT: And, Lalo, that was uncalled for. You know better than that. Come on now.

Seriously, if that's what you think the pop genre is, then you merely read the headlines and assume the other 99% is exactly that.
Which it's not by the way.

*long rant about pop*
I must say I agree to some extent about what you say, since
some pop is pretty much music structured to sound catchy, while having pretty much no depth to it, and having lyrics that anyone could be identified with, only because it is what sells. But at the same time, a lot of genres function the same way. For example, a lot of metal is pretty much snobbery about being violent and aggresive and so on, which is (to my point of view if I followed yours) done for teenagers to feel identified with it whenever the case is that they attempt at giving a tough image of who they are and so on. In the end, you could look at it on different ways. For instance, all music could be done to be a product of an industry. On the other hand, all music could be done as a way for the artist to express himself/herself freely. In the middle there is that there are artist that belong to either of the mentioned sides, but there's no real way for you to demonstrate which side they belong to unless the artists give any testimony themselves.

To be fair, saying that people who like pop music are "unloyal" and "godawful" and that they only care about looks isn't that respectful either
A) I said I could have worded it better and apologised for that
B) It wasn't some sarcastic useless comment
Anyway I'll cut to the chase so this isn't going on forever;
What i'm saying is why should someone who works their arse off doing what they enjoy with a wide knowledge of music who has spent their whole life dedicated to it, be undercut by the production of the industry who has their songs written for them? 99% of pop is this way.
Reading a few of the comments on the Grammy page;
I know that the people posting "Roaaaaarrrr!" and variations on it are voting for Katy Perry, but all I can think of every time I see it is "Man, there are a lot of people here who love A Nightmare To Remember!". :lol
Sorry about that, it's just that johnnybaxy exposed his opinions in a way I consider to be somewhat immature. I think it's not good to say that a certain style of music is pure crap. Pop music, enjoy it or not, has its own strengths just like every other type of music out there. Before any "PROG IS TEH BEST THEM TECHNICAL!", I think it's very uncalled for saying 99% percent of pop music videos feature naked women and that's the reason they're hits. I like pop music, and I enjoy several things that pop artists put out there and that's my point of view, because I don't think it's fair that DT fans (or prog fans, for that matter) say their musical taste is better than other persons'. That's my opinion as baxy has his own, but either way sorry if I ofended you, pal.

Sure, Blurred Lines is awful, but that doesn't invalidate all of pop music. Want your mind blown? Pop on Justin Timberlake's new album.
Anyway, this is suuuuuuper off-topic.
Okay, well, let's keep focused on the songs that are actually in the poll please. That is at least somewhat related to the topic.
I was wondering why the Apple thing was even listed then I remembered the old expression about song and dance and how it means something that's blown way out of proportion/making a big deal out of something small. So, Grammy.com is suggesting Apple is giving us all a song and dance with their latest phones.

Anyway, the Katy Perry song is pretty damn catchy, and I normally don't like her music. The video itself is pretty awesome from a production standpoint, and Katy isn't over-sexualized or anything. I don't think you could rightfully accuse that video of selling sex to youngsters.
I think we can all agree, though, that there's no excuse for this thing that Miley Cyrus has turned into. Although she certainly is "trending".

In defense of Blurred Lines. I find it irresistibly catchy.
Watch, the video for say The Looking Glass features scantily clad women with JR saying over and over "You know you want it." "What rhymes with hug me?"
On the subject of Katy Perry, I would like to point out that Roar was massively popular before she even released the music video. When she premiered the song, it was in the form of this lyrics video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9SeJIgWRPk). That video currently has 41 million views, and it doesn't even show her face, much less any nudity. So I think we can safely rule out the idea that people only like Katy Perry for her looks.
Although she is very good looking.
Very, very good looking.

EDIT: Holy shit, I just scrolled up and saw the Wrecking Octaball. Wow, that's frickin' hilarious.
I have to say about this whole premonition of pop music. Sometimes, not all pop music is really full of terrible lyrics and smut, sometimes, it can be A. catchy and B. Enjoyable. I never thought I would applaud any pop musicians, at all, but there are, at least, a couple out there (Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk) that is A. very successful and B. makes decent music. It may not be the music I like, but it is at least music that has substances rather than short-term bang and flash.
That said, DT gotta take this down and not let what's her face (I didn't mean Perry, she's all right), win this thing.

jonnybaxy has a few good points, but it was so predictable that the forum would jump him. "Yap, yap, you cannot bash shitty music because music is entirely subjective and all opinions are created equal. Broaden your horizons you narrow minded sap." This is getting old. I guess there are no bad movies, books, visual arts either because somebody is bound to find them good. Every single element of that Katy Perry song felt like the same old crap I've heard a thousand times before. Here's a quote you might enjoy:

When the judgement of history comes in 3-400 years, it's not the simplistic, shallow and worthless crap hyped by today's musically illiterate mainstream music critics that will be praised and remembered from the 20th century, but classic '70s progressive rock.

While I think that jonnybaxy went about sharing his opinion the wrong way, I do think there's a kernel of truth in what he's saying. I love a lot of pop music, and there are a lot of great pop artists, but there's a significant handful of pop that's complete rubbish. At the same time, the same could probably said for any genre! With pop, I think it seems a little worse because the music is a little more manufactured, so to speak.
Listen. I love prog, but I also love a well crafted 3 minute pop song. I think people here get mixes up with pop = popular which is the furthest from the truth. There is plenty of good pop music out there. In any genre, there is good music and bad music. A lot of prog fans get mad when someone says prog music sounds all the same. That's the furthest from the truth just like others saying pop is crap.

Ok, just clearing a few things up;
1: I don't think in any way that prog interest makes me greater than anyone.
2: I see a correlation in people who listen to music about sex and other smut and people who have no respect, there are of course outliers so to speak.
3: I do agree that in some circumstances there is actually a few good chart songs occasionally (Daft punk)
4: I personally believe that it is the music that is helping bring the next generation up with no respect with the contents of the songs
I remember when I listened to the song Home by Dream Theater, I just lost all of the respect that I had...
I'm sorry, you are entitled to your opinions, but I feel bad that you see that correlation. I don't think the music has much to do with it, there are many other factors.

It's not
what you write about, it's
how you do it. Sex is an intriguing subject and could constitute the basis for great music and lyrics. (e.g. "I don't need your mercy fuck to get me through the day"). :P

4: I personally believe that it is the music that is helping bring the next generation up with no respect with the contents of the songs
Whenever somebody writes that, I read it in her voice. https://youtu.be/lj3iNxZ8Dww?t=10s

I remember when I listened to the song Home by Dream Theater, I just lost all of the respect that I had...
I actually meant in more of an 'in your face' kind of way like "F**king Bitches every night, getting paper" etc...

I'm sorry, you are entitled to your opinions, but I feel bad that you see that correlation. I don't think the music has much to do with it, there are many other factors.
That's why I said "the music that is
helping bring the next generation..."
The first one was more of a joke.
And as for the last thing you quoted me on, I just think it's a cold view to have. I think music is a very small part of the respect issue with kids these days. There are many other factors and then farther FARTHER down the list, it's music. Music for quite a while has had songs about sex and drugs--80s Arena Rock, 70s Rock, etc. Maybe not as in your face, but it was there.
I agree it has been there but not in actual words most of the time, it was between the lines rather than blatantly there in text..
I agree that there are more important things that bring people up e.g parents, environment and friends but I, without a doubt, see a correlation between these disrespectful people and the music.. For example how many times do you see a teenager blasting out Rush at the back of a bus? :lol
51% :metal
Oh man - can we get it to 58% just to really seal the deal ? :lol

Sorry, dude. I have to disagree. The vast, vast majority of people listen to pop music. Therefore, it only makes sense that the majority of assholes listen to pop music. I really don't think it has to do with the music.
I see where you're coming from but I would really say that there are more of them per 100 fans to any other genre

I agree. This is like the old argument about TV/movies/videogames/music destroying the young generation, with some musical elitism thrown in for good measure. :P
A win here means nothing, guys.
Remember how DT won in a Rolling Stone poll against prominent prog greats like Rush, Yes, and King Crimson? In the article, they were sure to address how DT utilized social media and internet groups to get votes.

The difference here being that Grammy.com has been relatively supportive of the group. They gave them a nomination for On the Backs of Angels, cut a deal to premiere Along for the Ride, and did a Q&A with John Petrucci.
RollingStone wouldn't do any of that.

Is it only me, or when I read that in like a singing voice or something, I got some sort of death metal vibe or something? That weird low gruff, almost sink disposal, sound voice?

(ok, this was partially based on a caption someone else came up with in the summer but it felt appropriate to use it now :lol)
That was damn good anyway

I actually listen to a ton of modern pop music. They make great tracks for running at the gym, and I can get a fresh playlist every few weeks.

Yeah :lol That really caught me by surprise. I literally said to myself, "Well I'll be damned..."

So when does this poll end and we get a "thank you" note Luna Park live stream/ youtube release from the guys? We've been at this for a while and we're still leading..
I think it ended today as there is a new poll for the 18th.
