Thinking about SS, I think its placement on the album hurts it a little.  I think SS and Never Enough should have swapped positions.  I know this isn't possible with the flow of the keys the songs are in but I kinda forget about SS when it comes on.  After NE, I'm ready for the title track.

Update!

64. Beneath The Surface
Highest Finish: 1 (Cool Chris)

63. Sacrificed Sons
Highest Finish: 5 (DragonAttack)

62. Pale Blue Dot
Highest Finish: 7 (Lethean)

The ADToE closer surfaced at 88 for me. I cover it every now and then and always enjoy it when I do.

Sacrificed Sons was 41. The instrumental slaps and JLB has some real powerful emotion to his vocals.

Pale Blue Dot is my 4th highest ranker from the MM era at 15. Absolute banger!

axeman90210

Beneath the Surface- I had this at #84. A really lovely tune with a great performance from James.

Sacrificed Sons- Not rated, this song's never done anything for me.

Pale Blue Dot- All the way up at #28 on my list. One of the stronger tracks from Distance Over Time, and it was cool to hear them go in a slightly more djenty way for a song. This made the biggest impression on me, and most of the crowd, at the album listening party.

CanuckChum

#1193
67. Ytse Jam (89). This is a pretty good blueprint for their future instrumentals. I do find myself drifting a bit in the middle, but they end it off strong.
66. The Silent Man (Unranked). A pleasant little tune. That being said, it is also the reason why A Mind Beside Itself does not completely work for me as a suite.
65. Raise the Knife (43). The score version is great but the demo itself is also quite good. If they removed a few of the weaker FII tracks and replaced them with this, I would like the album a lot more.
64. Beneath the Surface (74). Great vocals from James, and I also like the lyrics a lot. I used to feel underwhelmed that this was the last song on the album, but I am starting to come around to it.
63. Sacrificed Sons (57). It gets overshadowed due to being right before Octavarium, but it is a great song in its own right. Both the mournful and the more frantic emotions are captured well.
62. Pale Blue Dot (40). Great drumming from MM, it has a more epic sound which fits with the theme of outer space.

Here in The Netherlands there's a new DT tribute band I went to see last month (called Regressive Hypnosis) and they actually played Pale Blue Dot. I was perplexed by how much I liked it, because I rarely, if ever, play it. I have to say I think some of the vocal melodies sound a bit lazy, like they're just following the evil chords in the verse. Instrumentally though it's great. It feels like a combination of djent and Symphony X in places.

Am a Dutch dude also but missed this one, too bad.

Catching up had a few in the last few placements but of note congrats Evermind for having The Silent Man at #12.   Love this tune think I might have beat Mirrorman to the runner-up spot as had it at #15  ;)  :metal

Number of Lists appeared on: 51 (Animal, Awaken, axeman90210, Ben_Jamin, bosk1, CanuckChum, CharlesPL, Cool Chris, Dave_Manchester, Dittomist, DragonAttack, Dream Team, DTwwbwMP, energythief, Evermind, Fonzie, geeeemo, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, jammindude, jingle.boy, jonny108, JPZealot, KevShmev, Lethean, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, Metro, MirrorMask, MoraWintersoul, Mosh, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, Peter Mc, pg1067, Podaar, porcacultor, ReaPsTA, Revenge319, Setlist Scotty, Stadler, TAC, The Realm, twosuitsluke, Vmadera00, WardySI, weirdo, Wim Kruithof, wolfking)

59. Hollow Years

Number of Lists appeared on: 53 (Adami, Animal, Awaken, axeman90210, Ben_Jamin, CharlesPL, Cool Chris, Dave_Manchester, devieira73, Dittomist, DragonAttack, DTwwbwMP, energythief, Evermind, geeeemo, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, Jamesman42, jammindude, jeff_kinsley, JiM-Xtreme, jingle.boy, JPZealot, KevShmev, King Puppies and the Acid Guppies, Lethean, lightningbolt, mariner, MirrorMask, Mladen, MoraWintersoul, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, pg1067, PixelDream, Podaar, porcacultor, ReaPsTA, Revenge319, romdrums, Stadler, SwedishGoose, TAC, The Realm, Toro, Trav86, twosuitsluke, WardySI, weirdo, Wim Kruithof, wolfking, Zydar)

Good song, I think the live version is bit overhyped but still a really cool jam.

61. Ministry of Lost Souls: #46 for me. I really liked this song when I first listened to it. Then it dropped off the map for me. But seeing it on the last tour made me appreciate it a lot more. Great piece.

60. The Bigger Picture: #53 for me. This song is the only reason (or I should say, the main reason) why I bought a 7 string guitar. Obviously it was a benefit to be able to play some of the other 7-string tracks. Great song on an album with a lot of not so great stuff.

59. Hollow Years: NR. While nice, I never understood the love for this song.

Animal

67. Ytse Jam (90).  Good, but not as good as most of the later instrumentals.
66. The Silent Man (54). A necessary breather between the relentless intensity of Voices and The Mirror. A great song on its own, but it does get elevated by being on my favorite album. Would be elevated to Top 5 if A Mind Beside Itself had been released as one song/suite.
65. Raise the Knife - (NR) I only know it from Score, which I rarely watch, and if I do, I only go for some of the favorites. I am probably missing out - a price for being an incorrigible skipper.
64. Beneath the Surface (88) I like ballads. But with DT, they it usually takes me longer time to appreciate them than other stuff.
63. Sacrificed Sons (93)  DT have done a lot of better stuff. But at least it is one of the songs on Octavarium that does not feel fake to me.
62. Pale Blue Dot (NR).   Like a lot of DoT, enjoyable enough when that album just happens to be playing in my car, but I don't seek it out elsewhere.
61. Ministry of Lost Souls (76) It might be slightly elevated by being a rare song I sort of like on an album I mostly dislike.
60. The Bigger Picture (65) It might be slightly downgraded by being one the many good songs on an album that I really like, but is not one of my top favorites.
59. The Hollow Years (67)  Objectively, this is not what DT is about. But I always found this song to be  a great singalong. One of few DT songs I like to sing and play on acoustic guitar every now and then (and unlike, say, Another Day, it can be sung even in the original key).

CharlesPL

Ministry of Lost Souls - none
The Bigger Picture - 96
Hollow Years - 77

HOF

I love Hollow Years. Probably a top 20ish DT track for me. I remember when I heard it for the first time I thought, "oh this sounds like the band are growing up," which appealed to me as a 15/16 year old for whatever reason. I enjoyed them taking a more laid back, restrained approach. Then they went and ruined it with an over the top key change and solo on Budokan.
Quote from: TAC on December 12, 2024, 05:40:22 PM"No way" is kind of strong, but I do lean with HOF.

61 The Ministry of Lost Souls - Pretty close to the consensus.  I have it at # 63.  For the people who dislike it, I understand why, I think.  But for whatever reason, it works for me.  I don't know, man.  I will say that the live version on Chaos in Motion is pretty ass.  I much prefer the studio recording.

60 The Bigger Picture - I have this at # 77.  I like it, but there isn't a lot going on that is spectacular.  But I definitely like it.

59 Hollow Years - I guess I like this one a little better than the consensus, ranking it at # 51.  I know some people much prefer the live version from Live at Budokan, but while it is definitely different, I don't think it is significantly better or worse than the studio version; I like both pretty equally.

61. The Ministry Of Lost Souls - this made it to 94 for me... somehow. It has some very nice parts, particularly the verses and the solo at the end. Other than that, it kind of drags... well, it drags a lot actually. 15 minutes... and that seems mainly because the tempo is soooo slowwwwww...

60. The Bigger Picture - very nearly one of my overall least favourite songs. I can't stand it. I don't really know what the lyrics are about but for me they are a bit too poetic and preachy to have any real impact. This one is also a drag. I almost always skip.

59. Hollow Years - much better! This made it to 33 for me. Much more impactful. Beautiful acoustic guitar at the beginning, lovely vocals including a great and memorable chorus. The Budokan version with the extended solo is fantastic. Great song.

TMOLS ... 70.  Not my fave off of SC, and I think it meanders a little to justify it's 15 minute existence.
TBP ... 33.  My top/fave track from DT12.  It just has this very full and rich sound, and doesn't over-stay it's welcome (unlike Illumination Theory)
HY ... 47.  I appreciate the studio version a bit more now, but I don't think a single person rating it would say it isn't elevated because of the L@B version.

Wow, some personal high rankers here!!!!

61. The Ministry Of Lost Souls

This is possibly one of the most divisive songs in DT's catalogue: some love it whole, some hate it whole, some love the slow parts but hate the solo, some the other way around.... as I previously explained, I get totally taken out of the immersion when there's such a crazy solo section slapped in the middle, and this song makes no exception. The "main" song is great and has a dramatic crescendo (do you remember me this time, even in death I gave you life...), all around I enjoy it at lot and it was great hearing it live again. Finished at 56 for me.

60. The Bigger Picture

An all around great song and possibly my favorite on DT12. After they started the 2017 tour with The Dark Eternal Night (ugh), this one in the second place was a fantastic change of pace. Finished at 42, 18 positions higher.

59. Hollow Years

One of their great ballads, I ranked it at 49. I know everyone will praise the Budokan version but it's not that the original one sucks as it is. Great stuff.

Nice to see I'm finally getting three for three, already 18 songs of my list are not there  :lol

The Budokan version is the antithesis of the studio version. It's everything the original was never meant to be. It was "let's take this nice song that we did that didn't have any of our usual cliches, and let's give it as much DT cliche as we've got!"

Rough update for me today :lol

The Ministry Of Lost Souls - One of my very least favourite DT songs ever. A total snoozefest from start to finish IMHO. Needless to say I didn't rank it.

The Bigger Picture - Also a song that didn't make my Top 100, not that there's anything particularly wrong with it. Just not memorable enough to make it.

Hollow Years - Ah but here we go, I had this lovely song as high up as #14. The Budokan version is lovely, the studio version is great too.

Indiscipline

The Water's Edge Bowl!

The Ministry of Lost Souls: didn't make the cut. Good outro though.

The Bigger Picture: 56. Perfectly structured journey to a great finale.

Hollow Years: 79. After excruciating meditation, I settled for a medium ranking between FII and Budokan.

60. The Bigger Picture

59. Hollow Years

TMOLS is a song I didn't like initially.  It's still not anything I really go for, but seeing it live a couple times recently has made me appreciate it a bit more.  I had it at #92, and it came in at #66 in the prior countdown.

The Bigger Picture is a solid song.  I had it at #53 - lower than Behind the Veil, and higher than Surrender to Reason.  For whatever reason, I think of those songs as a group.  The song had a big drop from the prior countdown, in which it tied for #35.

When I first listened to FII, Hollow Years was the first song that connected with me, and it remains my highest ranked song on the album at #38.  This ranking is based on the studio version only.  I think the Budokan version ruins it.  The song came in at #69 in the prior countdown, so a bit of a bump this time.

Last time Beneath the Surface was my #1, and it was the lowest ranking #1. It is still my number 1.

1) This album came out round the time our first daughter was born. I was really in to it and listening to it often. I handled bedtime duty and while I realized it didn't make a great album for getting her to sleep, I would often play this song and sing it to her while we sat in her rocking chair.

Thanks for the share  :heart :tup

At the other end of the spectrum, a close Queen and DT friend had his engagement broken off shortly after this release.  We did meet her the year before, so I couldn't help thinking of them every time I heard it.  I never did ask him what he thought of the song. They would eventually marry, only to divorce a few years later.

61. The Ministry Of Lost Souls

95 for me. Sweet, atmospheric and fun when the going gets tough. Different tastes notwithstanding, I can't really get why SC gets such a bad rap -- to me, they're in great form. Maybe not as poignant as they were or would be later on, but surely a band doing their thang.

60. The Bigger Picture

61, so a near match! I really get why someone would get a 7-string guitar because of it. Great balance of weight and outright pretty piano bits.

59. Hollow Years

15 for me. Yeah I'll take any version, this song just works wonders for me. Should've been part of some Don Juan de Marco-esque film in the 90s, I'll blame the label for not working in the band's favor helping them get soundtrack placements. So glad to have seen it live in 2010 (even though I wasn't aware of the Beatles-esque bridge, so that kind of blindsided me  :lol )

Evermind

Solid update today, some of my favourite songs there.

The Ministry of Lost Souls - #21 - I still think the song is great. There was a time when I would've ranked it near the Top 10 but nowadays I do agree the instrumental section drags a little bit. Otherwise it's a fantastic song.

The Bigger Picture - #29 - the biggest highlight of DT12 for me. Everything in this song is great until the very end ("I am home) which I find a bit lackluster.

Hollow Years - #19 - this song really grew on me in the last ~8 years and I've got to agree with porcacultor here, both versions are amazing. Now it's the best song on FII by a mile in my book.
Quote from: Train of Naught on May 28, 2020, 10:57:25 PMThis first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

PixelDream

I never really liked The Ministry of Lost Souls. It drags a lot and the instrumental section is like - it literally has nothing to do with the song. I'm usually rolling my eyes when ppl complain about 'tacked on' instrumental sections (for example the instrumental section of Endless Sacrifice gets my blood pumping and it actually leads to an awesome unison melody that perfectly gives way to the bridge of the song). But this song definitely has an instrumental section that feels like it belongs in another song.

EDIT: Ok, that was very very good. Anyone else prefer Petrucci with short hair lol?

Now the Once in a Livetime version with the extended acoustic solo at the beginning is quite nice. But they left the song itself intact.

Oh, I also forgot about the honky tonk jam on the outro on the LAB version.

Now, don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with that sort of soloing/jamming/more power ballady approach to a song. But JP has lots of opportunities to spread out and shred, and the band do plenty of things that are more out there musically. Do all of that during one of the other songs that calls for it though!

Also also, I feel like I should fairly point out that they did a similar thing to The Silent Man on LSFNY, which I was fine with in general up until the key change at the end where James is belting at the top of his lungs. I liked what they did with it for the most part, but the ending does have a similar affect of "why did you have to do that with *this* song?"

One thing I'm trying to get a handle on here, we've got people ranking the Top 100 who haven't heard a third of the discography. OK so I get it, you stopped following the band when they started doing stupid crap - but the point is the stupid crap went out the window when MP left. There are no Muse or Metallica or flippin' Opeth songs, it's just DT. Give it a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised.  :tup

In the BCSL doc, MP says "we're taking you on a journey from Opeth to Pink Floyd".  :tdwn Nope, that's troubling. I want a DT journey and I hope it continues.

I figured I might be the highest ranker on The Ministry of Lost Souls (#10) but Mladen deserves the crown. It really is a wonderful piece with a great storyline and the music has such an emotional understream. Visited last View-tour twice and both times this was (next to The Count) my highlight of the evening.

The Bigger Picture has probably my most favorite Petrucci-solo of all... not due to it's complexity, the slow gentle movement of the structure has Gilmour written all over it. I absolutely adore this one...

Hollow Years (Budokan version) was the very first song I ever heard from Dream Theater, in 2016. It opened the door to my musical obsession, which last couple of years took over all other band-interests completely.

The Minstry of Lost Souls was not ranked. Systematic Chaos is one of the lowest ranked albums for me. Only two songs ranked and this is not one of them.
The Bigger Picture did not rank. Why? Listening to it now I should have had it at about rank 50 or something. Blackout when ranking.
Hollow Years ranked at 66 for me which feels about right listening to it now. Very nice ballad.

This is the only batch where I'll probably see TWO songs I didn't rank.  Kinda surprised to see that happen in a batch this high.

Hollow Years is just awful.  And I hate saying that about a band like DT.  But I just don't like this song and never have.  No idea why they insisted on playing it live regularly for two tours in a row that were after the FII tour was long over.

Ministry is another rare song that I think fails.  But it was fun seeing them play the instrumental section when they brought it out live.
