A twofer catch up:

To Live Forever: Not rated, it's OK but never wowed me the way some of the other unreleased songs have.

Answering the Call: I was pretty close for this one #78 on my list. One of the standouts from View.

Through Her Eyes: One of the few songs from my favorite album not to make the list. It's a serviceable ballad, and I'd agree with Chad's point about it serving an important function in the flow of SFAM, I just wasn't taking that into account in my rating.

Lost Not Forgotten: I put this at #85. A solid song, though overshadowed by some other gems on ADTOE

Fall Into The Light: Another song where they go full Metallica, but it's a mode I tend to enjoy DT operating in. Lovely middle section as well

Honor Thy Father: I had this a bit higher at #45. I love this song, there are just so many different killer riffs scattered throughout :metal

Lost Not Forgotten.... not ranked. It's not bad, I never really connected with it.

Fall Into the Light was my 89. If it had a chorus I would rank it even higher, the song is great and one of the best on d/t.

Honor Thy Father.... not ranked. Absolutely not the way I want heavy DT to go.

71. Honor Thy Father
This song is tough. I love certain parts, like the drumming and the main guitar riffs but boy do I hate the verses. I hate the delivery of those verses, it sounded completely out of James' wheelhouse.

This has always been the msot confounding aspect of the band to me, that they would have James sing so un-James like on certain songs, not utilizing his strengths.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

SwedishGoose

Lost Not Forgotten did not make it through the ranker. Listening to it now I can see why. There are many better DT songs in my opinion.
Fall Into the Light did not rank either. See above....
Honor Thy Father snuck in at the bottom place. Some nice parts lift this song into the 100s.

My ranking so far

28 Through Her Eyes  (74)
32 Awaken the Master (81)
33 Sleeping Giant (85)
37 Our New World (93)
45 To Live Forever (76)
50 Answering the Call (75)
59 Transcending Time (90)
65 The Looking Glass (92)
81 Behind the Veil (89)
87 Surrender To Reason (83)
89 Forsaken (95)
91. The Gift of Music (98)
94. Never Enough (100)
100 Honor Thy Father (71)

geeeemo

79. The Shattered Fortress - 97 for me - I don't have any attachment to the Suite. I like it but don't love it.

78. A Fortune In Lies - Not on the list

77. The Best Of Times - 49 for me. It's beautiful and I was a daddy's girl, so I can relate.

76. to Live Forever - Not on list

75.  Answering the Call - 30 for me. At first I didn't care for it. It sounds like some of the Octavarium tracks that I don't like. But, after many listens, it Really grew.

74.  Through Her Eyes - not on the list, but I must have made a mistake, because I really like this song. It is a ballad, so maybe that's it. It feels more emotional to me at times than Spirit. Maybe because it's played more.

73.  Lost Not Forgotten - 68.  I always enjoy it more than I think I will.

72.  Fall Into the Light -  59.   The solo is Awesome. The rest is really good.

71.  Honor Thy Father - I just don't like anything about this song.

I seem to prefer newish DT more than the older, though not exclusively as they have too many great songs throughout. I suspect it is because I came in in 2016. I don't have the same amount of time with the older stuff.

Cool Chris

79.   The Shattered Fortress #75 I like the inclusion of the Promises (I think that is what they are) but hate how they are done.
78.   A Fortune In Lies NR
77.   The Best Of Times #92
76.   The Live Forever NR My dislike for this song is inversely proportional to how much the band seems to like it.
75.   Answering The Call #60
74.   Through Her Eyes NR
73.   Lost Not Forgotten #30 Once I got to this song on ADToE after already liking the first two, I knew I was in for something special with this album.
72.   Fall Into The Light #34 Love the instrumental section.
71.   Honor Thy Father NR
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

72. Fall Into The Light

71. Honor Thy Father

Three songs I didn't rank.  LNF may have some good parts, but the beginning gave me the same vibes as ITPOE did - as if they were overcompensating for something.  FITL embodies what I haven't liked about modern DT - just a very generic metal song.  HTF is just awful.  In the prior countdown, LNF tied with Lie at #59, FITL came in at #43 (so this is a huge drop), and HTF came in at #81.

2/3. HTF is a bottom 10 DT song for me, they're doing everything I don't like and nothing I like in that song. I other 2 rank high because they're nice balances of melody and musicianship. LNF could have used some trimming though.

HOF

Honor Thy Father might have been cool as an instrumental track. The lyrics and vocals really drag it down.

Honor Thy Father - 90

Wim Kruithof

Lost Not Forgotten is amongst the very few songs I consider to be bad. Can't stand the chorus... that album has similarities with Falling Into Infitiny. They both have some wonderful pieces... and the worst in the whole Dream Theater discography.

Honor Thy Father could probably be close to my top 10 if they didn't include the filmsamples in it. The piece is pure metal where I really can relate to the lyrical theme. Pure class... if only the samples would have been cut out.

My own 100:

095: I Walk Beside You     #80 -15
094: S2n     #94 spot on
093: Never Enough     #100 +7

The Realm

To Live Forever - unranked, Not close. Shocked this song is in top 100.

Answering the Call - my immediate favourite from the latest album. Lots to like in this song. My rank 58.

Through Her Eyes - a beautiful track on a great album. My rank 41.

Lost Not Forgotten - has grown on me over the years, parts of this song I really love but it is probably a bit much overall. My rank 63.

Fall Into The Light - obviously strong Metallica vibes but it works for me and I love the instrumental section. My rank 56.

Honor Thy Father - nearly had a reveal that cracked my top 20, I ranked this 23. I love the album and this song, I do realise it isn't everyone's tastes but the Train of Thought album was huge for me back in the day and I still really enjoy it.

I had Lost Not Forgotten at #11.
My 2nd highest rated Mangini tune.  I think this song is amazing. It pulls out some emotion in some of the parts too. The playing is amazing and it's exactly how I like my Dream Theater.

I had Fall Into The Light at #37.
I love this song. It's nice and heavy, but in a natural heavy way, and not fake heavy like in Honor Thy Father.

I had Honor Thy Father as Not Rated.
I wrote this in Alessandro's Scene's Thread yesterday...I'm not a fan of this song. I like some of the sections but on the whole, it's kind of a chore to get through, especially considering the subject matter which I find a bit over the top and cringingly angry. Dream Theater's secret weapon has always been James and they hang him out to dry here.

A full house today, but these were all ranked fairly low.

Lost Not Forgotten was ranked at #84. One of the growers from this whole process, but not as much as others from the same album.

I had Fall Into The Light at #64, which is higher than I expected it to land. It's that bit that starts around 4 minutes that sells it for me. It's quite simple, but I just love that melody.

Lastly was Honor Thy Father, at #73. I've never hidden the fact that I find ToT to be a pretty mid album. It's not terrible but I don't find it particularly exciting or thrilling. It's just a bunch of Ok DT songs to me. This was my second lowest rated song from that album.

Yup, while I feel FITL sits just about right, LNF could have gone higher. It has probably been a victim of ballads, Astonishing tunes and older nostalgia songs I tend to leonise.

JiM-Xtreme

76.   The Live Forever - 87 for me. Took a while for me to get it but, it's grown for me over time.
75.   Answering The Call - didn't quite make my top 100 but still, it's a cool tune.
74.   Through Her Eyes - this reached 25 for me. It's certainly one of the lesser songs from SFAM but, when you consider the songs in question... The intro with John and Theresa is beautiful, as are the vocal melodies throughout the song proper. The bridge is the highlight for me... just so emotional.
73.   Lost Not Forgotten - didn't make my list. Like several songs on ADToE, I'm forever put off by the stylistic and structural similarity to a certain track from I&W which is clearly superior. Still, I do rather enjoy the crazy stuff in the first couple of minutes and that first verse riff is just awesome, I love the dirtiness of it.
72.   Fall Into The Light - didn't make my list. I like the fast parts and the keyboard solo but as a whole, not that memorable or special.
71.   Honor Thy Father - I love this one, and it holds a lot of nostalgic value for me as I became a fan during the Train of Thought era. It got up to 46 for me so whilst I would seem to like it a bit more than most, I'm very glad it's made the overall list at all, let alone this high up. I know that stylistically it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I just love the almost straight-forward heaviness of it, there's really very few songs like this in DT's catalogue which does make it special. The intro rules, of course. The fact that the rhythm throws you off at the beginning, being deceptively complex - it takes you a while to be certain where the downbeat is. The fast unison parts are awesome. I love the pure aggression and anger of the lyrics and delivery of such, it's always interesting to hear JLB deliver something like this which isn't exactly the style he's known for, but he pulls it off. I like how the section with the samples gradually builds up and then we get a nice keyboard solo before the chorus takes us home. What more can I say, this song's always a good time for me.

Yeah, and I drop The Spirit Carries On, as well. Hate them.  I'm not wedded to the album as a whole, but some of the tracks are top-tier.

To Live Forever didn't rank for me.  Just never a song I really cared for.

ATC actually came in at number 51!  I really disliked the new album when it came out.  I don't love it now, but it's grown on me.  However ATC from the first listen was the only song I was able to dig.  I like it a lot more now again.  I don't find it a heavy song but the riff in isolation is heavy as fuck.  I like the subtle vocal melodies too and a great solo section.

Through Her Eyes came in at number 86.  Probably could have gone higher, it's a beautiful song.

LNF came in at 70.  This one and THE probably could easily swap, but meh.  It's a decent song with a killer solo.

FITL I had at 66.  I disliked this song when the album came out but it was a huge grower.  Cool structure, somewhat different and unique, just a cool tune.

HTF is a tune I've loved from the get go.  I understand why some might not take to it, but I think it's great.  For me, the middle section with all the samples is one of the most intense DT moments ever.  I ranked this at number 19.

To Live Forever- NR. It's enjoyable enough but I keep forgetting it even exists

Answering the Call- NR. Nothing about it sounds fresh, exciting, or interesting, but it's still a decent song because Dream Theater rules.

Through Her Eyes- 37
Absolutely gorgeous song and one of my favorites from SFAM

Lost Not Forgotten- 53
Takes us on a wild adventure that includes some of the most frenetic and seizure-inducing of the band's catalog, and also a comforting detour to Images and Words at 7:09.

Fall Into the Light- 20
Should be higher, much much higher! I'm not a big fan of Distance Over Time but this song is just incredible! At just 7 minutes, it has everything a Dream Theater fan could ever want. Like many of you, my favorite part is probably that lovely instrumental section in the middle, but I also think this has one of the coolest endings to any DT song.

Honor Thy Father- 85
Really appreciate all the anger and bitterness in this song. The only part I don't care for at all is the spoken-word section and its overuse of "regret". It makes me long for the cinematic samples of Awake because of how effectively they were used.

Cool Chris

The movie samples wouldn't be so bad but I cannot help associating them with that 3 hours of my life i lost watching that snoozefest.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

79.   The Shattered Fortress (NR) the only time I left to buy myself a drink during a show. Nice start, nice ending.
78.   A Fortune In Lies (NR) great musical opener, the Marquee is better, but James tries too hard on that one.
77.   The Best Of Times (NR) that ending solo is beyond heartbreaking.  As with TSF, I skip the vocal sections.
76.   To Live Forever (#53) included on my Side Two altered 'Awake' disc. Mrs. DA likes it, too.
75.   Answering The Call (#51) shorter can be better, probably why this 'View' track tops the others for me.
74.   Through Her Eyes (#36) might be the wife's second favorite DT track.  James and all really nailed it on the I&W tour.
73.   Lost Not Forgotten (NR) the one ADToE tune I'll always skip because of a couple harsh moments
72.   Fall Into The Light (#11) that instrumental.......  Damn, this dropped 29 spots from the last countdown. ? ? ?
71.   Honor Thy Father (NR) one of my least favorites. I listened up to the echoey rap part and stopped, now knowing why I haven't listened to this in about fifteen years.  Tastes ;)

What's the tracklist for the "altered" Awake?

:(

This...just...horrifies me...

I'll never forget the first time I saw Magnolia.

First hour: I almost shut it off. I hate every single person in this movie.  Why the crap am I even watching this dreck?

Second hour: Ok...parts are becoming interesting, but this cannot be worth the time I've already invested. What a waste. I swear I'm only going to finish it because I'm 2/3rds through it and I want to know what happens.

Third hour: [everything comes together] [Jammin has been bawling like a baby for 20 straight minutes] That's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!!!!

It's a grower, but that's now easily a top 5 all time movie for me.  And it's cathartic too, because it always makes me cry my eyes out for the entire third act.

Cool Chris

I recall seeing it on a date, perhaps not the best for a 20-something Cool Chris, whose mind was at least partly on the lady at my side. I found nothing redeeming about the entire experience, except for the performances, and my date expressed feeling exactly the same when we left.

I am bothered by the fact that I cannot remember who I saw this with, though I am 100% certain it was on a date. Wikipedia says early 2000 release date... that's not helping.

Magnolia is a wonderful film! And Honor Thy Father is DT near their best. Hanging James out to dry? No. He puts in a great performance.

Catching up on the last 9:

79.   The Shattered Fortress - 66 - This one has grown on me quite a bit over the years.  I initially thought it was a weak ending to the 12-step suite.  I now like how it summarizes the previous songs with some changes / changed lyrics / etc...
78.   A Fortune In Lies - NR - This song would have ranked in the top 100 for me if JLB had sung the studio version.
77.   The Best Of Times - NR - Never has done anything for me.
76.   To Live Forever - NR
75.   Answering The Call - NR
74.   Through Her Eyes - 24 - Always have enjoyed this one.  My love for Scenes probably elevated this one higher than it would have been if it wasn't part of a concept album.
73.   Lost Not Forgotten - NR - This is probably the song on ADTOE that I enjoy the least.  FWIW, I did enjoy it live when I saw DT in 2012.
72.   Fall Into The Light - 67 - Decent rocker and I enjoy that instrumental section a lot.
71.   Honor Thy Father - 11 - I love everything about this song and I thought I had a shot at being the one who rated it the highest.  I could see it eventually moving into my top 10, but not quite this time.  I won't go into details, but the lyrics really really really hit close to home for me and are extremely on point.  I'd love for them to dust this one off now that Portnoy is back into the band.  TOT kicks ass.

Amen to that!

73. Lost Not Forgotten (52). This has a very grand opening section, and the instrumental section later on is also great. I love the little part at the end of the guitar solo where Jordan does some groovy piano chords underneath.
72. Fall Into the Light (64). I always forget what this sounds like, but when I listen to it I enjoy it quite a bit.
71. Honor Thy Father (Unranked). Some parts of this work well, and others do not. The sample filled breakdown I have never been a fan of, but the keyboard solo following it is excellent.

Zydar

I really like that little short bass riff before the first verse in Honor Thy Father (at 01:24).

Animal

A catch up, so to be brief, I'll try to do each song in no more than 5 words.

To Live Forever (NR) - Not even semi-finished.

Answering the Call (NR) - Surprised it is this popular.

Through Her Eyes (83)  - Who doesn't love going fretless?

Lost not Forgotten (32)  -  A positive case for wankery.

Fall into the Light (NR) -  I don't remember this one.

Honor Thy Father (92) - The worst song at ToT.

Mladen

I've got some catching up to do. I didn't rank The Shattered fortress, To life forever, Answering the call, Lost not forgotten, Fall into the light and Honor thy father.

A Fortune in lies was my #46. Not a lot of complaints about this one, just an impressive prog metal song for 1989.

The Best of times was my #23. Looking back on the list, I'm surprised I ranked it that high. It's still a fantastic songs that contains some of their best musical moments from the era, and it's really an emotional roller coaster. The main theme is absolutely gorgeous.

Through her eyes was my #66. A beautiful ballad that works both in the context of the album and on its own. I remember tearing up hearing it live, it was wonderful.
