Dream Team

From today's 3, only had Answering the Call. Through Her Eyes is way too cheesy for me and I don't really like it when James goes into those feminine voices.

76. To Live Forever

Not ranked, it's a good song, but I found at least 100 songs I like better.

76. Answering The Call

I have it at 97. I like it, one of the best on View, I probably should have ranked it higher but it probably paid the price of being relatively new. Again, I like the song, but I trusted the system that calculated I liked 96 songs more.

73. Through Her Eyes

This is one of the songs I thought I had a chance of being the highest ranker - I had it at 23. Came close.

Masterpiece on an album full of masterpieces. I don't consider it the relatively "dull" moment of SFAM, but a fantastic ballad which I love just as much as The Spirit Carries On. Great melody, soulful rendition from James, all in all a nice lovely song and the only one I never heard live until I saw them performing Scenes in full. Weirdest thing - now that I'm thinking about the show, I don't have specific memory from the song. D'uh. But it was nice to finally say I have heard all the songs from SFAM live....... thanks to a show where I heard anyway the whole thing live  :D

To Live Forever - 53
Answering the Call - none
Through Her Eyes - 85

Cool Chris

I just looked up the wikipedia list of songs recorded by Dream Theater. It says 4 versions of To Live Forever exist. That is 4 too many.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

76. Answering The Call

73. Through Her Eyes

If TLF and ATC tied, it would be at the #75 spot, and Through Her Eyes should be at #74, right?

I didn't have TLF in my countdown, and I am truly baffled to see it this high.  I first heard it at my 4th DT show in June 1993.  I thought it was pretty meh, but I also thought it was probably an unfinished song that might turn up on the next album.  When it didn't, I pretty much forgot about it, except when it would turn up on the occasional live release.  It does absolutely nothing for me.  It came in at #91 in the last countdown, which makes a bit more sense.

Answering the Call also didn't make my list.  See my prior comments regarding Sleeping Giant and Awaken the Master.

Through Her Eyes is great.  I initially didn't give it a lot of credit, and I think it may have been because I may have mixed it up as part of another song.  Great melodic interlude.  I had it at #41, and it came in at #94 in the last countdown, so this is a big jump.

TLF: #50 great track.

ATC: #44. Best of A View. Killer riff.

THE:#26. Don't know why, but this song always gets to me. It's just a beautiful piece of music.

porcacultor

79.   The Shattered Fortress  94. It's always better than I remember it. It feels like the most "medley-ish" of the suite, and that's OK.
78.   A Fortune In Lies           67. The drama! So much fun. Very classic "opening track" feel.
77.   The Best Of Times         Didn't rank for me, but barely so (104). Love that the version with MP singing is available for public consumption.
76.   To Live Forever             43. If I were king, DT would still be doing U2-style tracks.
75.   Answering the Call       Didn't rank for me. Not bad, I quite like the bridge before the chorus, but overall I can live without it.
74.   Through Her Eyes         100. Used to skip it a bunch as a dumb teenager. Then I grew a little older and really got into it.

I had To Live Forever as Not Rated.
This song blows!  :lol
Seriously though. I don't get it.

I had Answering The Call as Not Rated.
I like it well enough, but I just couldn't fit it into my Top 100.

I had Through Her Eyes at #63.
Seems a bit high I guess, but it's a nice break on Scenes. I especially love the live version on Live Scenes.

Two out of three again today.

I can kinda understand the dislike for TLF, but I really quite like it. It landed at #80 for me.

Like many other View songs, Answering the Call didn't rank for me, and ended up at #122, between two other View songs.

I really love all the songs from Scenes From a Memory, and Through Her Eyes is no different. #44 for me, but it could've easily gone higher.

My ranking so far:

13. Wither
20. Never Enough
27. The Best of Times
29. Constant Motion
30. A New Beginning
31. The Shattered Fortress
35. The Enemy Inside
36. I Walk Beside You
44. Through Her Eyes
45. The Looking Glass
49. Forsaken
55. Behind the Veil
62. Surrender to Reason
80. To Live Forever
83. This is the Life
86. Our New World
100. New Millennium

Not ranked:

109. Vacant
112. Only a Matter of Time
113. Afterlife
114. A Fortune in Lies
119. Sleeping Giant
121. Awaken the Master
122. Answering the Call
123. Transcending Time
125. S2N
140. The Gift of Music

Jamesman42

100. Never Enough (17th) I don't get how this is at 100. This song has many cool parts, especially the instrumental break.
99. Wither (66th) Solid song, when it hits, it's great but it doesn't always warrant a listen.
98. The Gift Of Music (92nd) It's alright. Past entry 82 on my list is stuff that just had to be ranked.
97. Vacant (70th) This song is so awesome on its own and how it leads into SoC
96. Afterlife (98th) See: The Gift of Music
95. Forsaken (87th) It's alright, live is good.
94. S2N (NR) Honestly just not familiar enough with this song yet.
93. Our New World (NR) See: S2N
92. The Looking Glass (54th) This is one of the better tracks off of DT12. Great chorus, surprised it is this low.
91. A New Beginning (NR) Couldn't tell you what album it's from.
90. Transcending Time I really don't like DT12 View at this time, with about 5 listens since returning to the forum last year. But this song stuck out and was good enough to make the list.
89. Behind The Veil (NR) See: A New Beginning
88. This Is The Life (33rd) This song is very underrated. It has a huge atmosphere to it and a great buildup to that final chorus.
87. New Millennium (NR) Not much of a fan of FII, and this song was always skippable to me.
86. Constant Motion (35th) Sometimes you need a straightforward song, DT does it great here, and the instrumental section with the bass and piano is cool as hell.
85. Sleeping Giant (NR)
84. The Enemy Inside (36th) Great, straightforward song, and ranks right next to Constant Motion.
83. Surrender To Reason (64th) This was a mistake to place it at 64th, but by the time I was ranking stuff, I didn't care past a certain point. Relistening now and it's alright, should actually be in the 90s or off my list, so an oversight on my part.
82. Only A Matter Of Time (97th) Not bad, something had to be here.
81. Awaken The Master (NR)
80. I Walk Beside You (43rd) What a great song, when DT does more uplifting/major key stuff, it's really great, usually. Feels very underrated to me. This song has layers to it musically, stuff that feels more subtle than usual. Also fun to play on the bass.
79. The Shattered Fortress (22nd) A few clunky transitions aside, amazing song. Only TGP is the better song in the 12-step suite. And of course, that ending "I am RESPONSIBLE!"
78. A Fortune In Lies (86th) Pretty good song, chorus can stuck in your head. Charlie does a fantastic job, though the live version with JLB is stellar.
77. The Best Of Times (62nd) The intro and body of the song are a few minutes too long. The feel of the song is good, though, and that outro solo is top tier.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
76. To Live Forever (NR) I do not remember this song.
75. Answering The Call (NR) Don't know it well enough.
74. Through Her Eyes (NR) It's alright, has a couple of nice moments. Maybe could have made my top 100 but not mad about it.
\o\ lol /o/

Dave_Manchester Thanks for sharing your story about losing a parent. Such an emotional period of time (my mother's days on earth will end nearby, due to cancer), music can have such an impact in those times. Glad it did for you back then.

094: S2n     #94 spot on
093: Never Enough     #100 +7
089: Only a Matter of Time     #82 -7
088: Surrender to Reason     #83t -5
087: Forsaken     #95 +8
086: Through Her Eyes     #74 -12
084: Constant Motion     #86 +2
082: The Best of Times     #77 -5
078: Behind the Veil     #89 +11
077: Afterlife     #96 +19
068: The Enemy Inside     #83t +15
060: A Fortune in Lies     #78 +18

040: Answering the Call     #75 +45
029: Awaken the Master     #81 +52

not rankend: #7 The Gift of Music / Vacant / Our New World / A New Beginning / This Is the Life / New Millennium / To Live Forever

76. To Live Forever (Unranked). Pretty good song, unfortunately the non-album tracks have to work a bit harder to stand out for me since I don't spend as much time with them. Although there were a couple that I liked enough to put on my list.
75. Answering the Call (41). Great intro riff, and I love the pre-chorus/chorus as well. The guitar solo also does something I liked on Behind the Veil, where they put the chorus riff underneath to give it extra momentum.
74. Through Her Eyes (100). A nice ballad which gets better in the context of the album. Coming after a couple of heavier songs, a softer one can be appreciated. I have never felt the need to hear to this outside of a full-album listen, which is why it barely made my list.

MustActFastToCoverUp

76. To Live Forever NR
75. Answering the Call NR Something with this song rubs me the wrong way. I think it's the strong accent on the "one" almost through the whole song. It also reminds me somehow of Outcry, which, spoilers, I'm not a fan of, either. My favourite part is what MM does in the last 30 seconds. One of only two View-tracks that didn't make my list.
74. Through Her Eyes, only at 92, could have been higher. Beautiful piece, but makes a lot more sense in context of the album.

Fonzie

Though her eyes joins The Silent Man and Hollow Years as songs that I always skip. In fact, I deleted THE from my iTunes, I dislike it that much. I don't hate ballads per se, but those songs bring down my DT experience.

Despite joining this thread late, I've opted to still make my own list for comparison to the official top 100. Can anyone tell me if we ranked SDOIT as one song or the 8 separated movements (annd ItPoE as two or the combined)? Also the extra FII demo songs and Eve?

We ranked Six Degrees as a single song and the choices included everything the band has ever put out: the FII demos, Eve, Raw Dog, the Majesty Demos, even Bombay Vindaloo and the likes.

Roger that. Assuming the same also goes for ItPoE then. Thanks MM

To Live Forever #82
Answering The Call #49
Through Her Eyes #72

All good songs, don't get the dislike for Live Forever yes far from essential but still good.  Answering The Call was an instant standout on A View and remains so, and Through Her Eyes I thought would rank higher for me but admittedly have tired of it over the years and guess I've ranked The Silent Man for my big ballad result ;D

My wild guesses so far about which songs of mine might not rank, starting from the bottom:

98, 95, 94, 93, 91, 90, 88, 85, 82, 80, 79, 77, maybe 72, 69, 67, maybe 64, maybe 61 if you're all heartless, 59, likely 52, 40 and 36.

Podaar

76. To Live Forever -  Did not make the cut. There is a reason why this was never a proper release.

75. Answering The Call - 83 on my list. This is the lowest rated tune from AVFTTOTW on my list. Good song, great riff.

74. Through Her Eyes - 21 for me. Just missed the top 20. I've always loved this song. The fretless bass work, JP's moody guitar work, and especially James' vocal delivery. Even better when listening to the complete album.

jingle.boy

76. To Live Forever -  66 for me.  I really like all the versions, but '94 is the best them.

75. Answering The Call - NR.  Though, upon listening to it just now, it could (should??) have.  Good little track that apparently got lost in the sea of my distaste for the release.

74. Through Her Eyes - 77 for me... Like Ale said, it's very important to the flow of SFAM.  You may not like it on it's own, but take it out of the album, and it would be a very strange transition between BTL and Home.  Now, if I'm considering the dual track live (JP/Theresa solo AND THE), that could very well be Top 25.  Inasmuch as L@B elevates Hollow years, LSFNY elevates this song.

I didn't have a great impression of this song when I first heard, it's grown on me a little bit though.

72. Fall Into The Light
Highest Finish: 11 (DragonAttack)
Number of Lists appeared on: 50 (Awaken, axeman90210, Ben_Jamin, bosk1, CanuckChum, Cool Chris, Dave_Manchester, devieira73, Dittomist, DragonAttack, Dream Team, DTwwbwMP, Evermind, Fonzie, geeeemo, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, jammindude, jingle.boy, jonny108, JPZealot, KevShmev, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, Metro, MirrorMask, MoraWintersoul, Mosh, MustActFastToCoverUp, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, Peter Mc, PixelDream, Podaar, ReaperKK, Revenge319, romdrums, Setlist Scotty, Stadler, TAC, The Realm, Toro, Trav86, twosuitsluke, WardySI, Wim Kruithof, wolfking, Zydar)

I didn't think I'd rank this song high but after doing the ranker I found I liked it a lot more compared to other songs. Didn't crack top 20 for me but it did better than I thought.

71. Honor Thy Father
Highest Finish: 10 (nobloodyname)
Number of Lists appeared on: 46 (Adami, Animal, Awaken, axeman90210, CharlesPL, Dave_Manchester, devieira73, Dittomist, DTwwbwMP, energythief, Evermind, hefdaddy42, Jamesman42, jammindude, jeff_kinsley, JiM-Xtreme, jingle.boy, jonny108, JPZealot, KevShmev, King Puppies and the Acid Guppies, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, MoraWintersoul, Mosh, MustActFastToCoverUp, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, Peter Mc, PixelDream, porcacultor, ReaperKK, romdrums, Setlist Scotty, SwedishGoose, The Realm, Toro, Trav86, twosuitsluke, Vmadera00, weirdo, Wim Kruithof, wolfking, Zydar)

This song is tough. I love certain parts, like the drumming and the main guitar riffs but boy do I hate the verses. I hate the delivery of those verses, it sounded completely out of James' wheelhouse.

Jamesman42

76. To Live Forever (NR) I do not remember this song.
75. Answering The Call (NR) Don't know it well enough.
74. Through Her Eyes (NR) It's alright, has a couple of nice moments. Maybe could have made my top 100 but not mad about it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
73. Lost Not Forgotten (75th) It's pretty okay. Some cool energy in the chorus.
72. Fall Into The Light (NR)
71. Honor Thy Father (78th) I enjoy this but is far and away the worst song on TOT as well.
\o\ lol /o/

73. Lost Not Forgotten - NR.  Meh... this song never clicked with me.  I'm not sure exactly why - it starts off just fine, but I think it's mostly the chorus, and James' overall delivery.  I think the key and time changes were kinda clunky - especially the latter.  The unison in the intro is wankery at it's worst.

72. Fall Into The Light - 98.  This just snuck in.  Almost didn't have it on, but it bumped out a few other songs upon one of my last listening sessions

71. Honor Thy Father - 93.  For a long time, this was my least favorite from ToT.  It's got some flaws, but it's also got some amazing things about it.

Lost Not Forgotten - not ranked - only track from ADTOE that didn't make the cut for me. This song really feels like a weak UAGM rip-off in some sections (and I'm not a big fan of UAGM in the first place) and I skip it whenever it comes up.

Fall Into the Light - #70 - love the instrumental section. The rest of the song is solid enough but the instrumental is amazing.

Honor Thy Father - #96 - barely made my list. I don't skip it but I don't love it either. Very middle-of-the-road song, on par with CM and TDEN.
Quote from: Train of Naught on May 28, 2020, 10:57:25 PMThis first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Zydar

Fall Into The Light is my favourite song from that album, and the instrumental section is among the best stuff they've ever done. I ranked it at #35.

Podaar

73. Lost Not Forgotten - 35 for me. Love the intro, and the rest tickles me.

72. Fall Into The Light - 94 on my list. A good song, but lacking in memorable moments for me.

71. Honor Thy Father  - Did not make my top 100, although I think it would have if I didn't use the ranking engine.

Deadeye21

Lost Not Forgotten was 94th for me. It's great, but even on its parent album it isn't the strongest.

Fall Into the Light is my 33rd according to the ranking engine, and while I think it's great, thus could probably drop several places while still staying in the 100.

Honor Thy Father fell 12 places outside of the 100. This really isn't a favourite for me apart from the opening drum fills.
