It's true, and I'm surprised every time I interact with a DT fan that doesn't hold Awake in at least the same regard as I&W. Awake is a perfect album, man.
Tower of ivory, house of gold? How could a woman be a tower of ivory or a house of gold?

HOF

Yeah, I would rank Awake as DT's best overall album (I usually rank FII second). But I&W is obviously very special in its own way.
Quote from: TAC on December 12, 2024, 05:40:22 PM"No way" is kind of strong, but I do lean with HOF.

I&W is the more popular album, but there's a solid chunk of fans (especially on Reddit) who prefer Awake (there's no such thing as "better").

I'd have to go back and check the album countdown thread, but I'd suspect that a solid plurality of fans have I&W, Awake, SFAM and SDOIT as the top 4 (in whatever order).

Mosh

I have always considered I&W/Awake/Scenes/SDOIT to be DT's big four and it shouldn't be a surprise to see any one of them ranked #1 by the average fan.

Surely agree. And I really hope they'll bring back lyrics which are as emotional and vulnerable as those on Awake. Lyrically easiest their best album of all.

The hell is that for

For me, I have the two as 1A and 1B, and which is which depends on the day.  Everything else they've ever done lies in the shadow of those two albums.

Setlist Scotty

Quote from: TAC on September 26, 2024, 11:33:17 AMThey also didn't promote it for nearly as long, as they were pumping out ACAS the following summer.
ACAS?  ???

You're right that they didn't promote it for as long, but I think the original intention was that they would. I don't think them working on ACoS was the reason why they didn't do a second run through North America. IIRC they were in the studio for about a week to record the track, and I don't know if they were at all involved with the post-production for it or the live tracks.

There were 4 or 5 dates at the end of their European run in March that got canceled, so the final date in London was moved up by about a week. Maybe there was the concern that Awake hadn't gained enough traction to warrant a second tour through North America? That said, they returned to Europe to hit the festival circuit a few months later and were there for about a month. But besides that and a pair of shows in New England, they didn't do any shows until the end of October when they returned to Japan for 3 shows in support of ACoS. So I think there was the opportunity for the band to do more touring, and so I can only guess that it was the label that refused to provide support. That and/or promoters in North America weren't willing to book them.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Yeah, as long as I've been a fan I've seen Awake often ranked near the top.  For me, it's up there in the top, but not at the top.

Definitely not a surprise to see that but you get such a variety of opinion on this forum that I question if there is any 'big four' at all when it comes to DT. For sure I&W and Scenes would be the big 2 but you take a look at the rankings on a place like DTF and wonder if anything else is a given.
Disclaimer: All opinions stated are my own unless otherwise specified. I do not personally know any present or former members of DT. From time to time where the context is or should be obvious, I may decline to explicitly label my words as opinion. I cannot predict the future.

pg1067

I pulled up the album countdown thread (which is now nearly 2 years old).  The top 4:

1. SFAM (14 first-place finishes, average finish - 2.7, 863 total points)
2. I&W (18 first-place finishes, average finish - 3.4, 822 total points)
3. SDOIT (16 first-place finishes, average finish - 4.2, 766 total points)
4. Awake (8 first-place finishes, average finish - 4.5, 747 total points)

By way of comparison, the #5 album (ADTOE) had 575 points.  Additionally, the top 4 albums earned 56 first-place votes.  The other 11 albums got only 9 combined first-place votes (with no other album getting more than 2 first-place votes).  Simply, the gap between the top 4 and the rest of the catalog is HUGE (at least among the 65 people who participated in the countdown).

Yeah I'd agree with that as well.

I view Awake as kind of a heavier continuation on Images & Words. I love the mix/sound of that album, and James sounds great on it. This is just before his vocal rupture.

Awake is a basically perfect masterpiece  :metal

It's about to turn 30!!!! mark your calendars for October 4th and celebrate three decades of awesomeness!

Don't worry, there are others who feel similarly. We can't help it if a chunk of DT fandom can't see Awake for the dull sludgefest it is

with DT's discography being as diverse as it is (which to me is a good thing), any combination of albums one likes (or not) is possible
All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top

Even at Rate Your Music, which is more or less a hipster's paradise, the top 4 here is the same top 4 there, although Train of Thought is dangerously close there to being in the 4th spot.

Awesome. I enjoyed almost all of the band's output with MM, but having MP back is making DT fun again and I'm happy about that.
