Not a clue.

Not as good as some songs on the album, but better than others.

:lol

I didn't think anyone still called it that!

Maybe I should ask why my version of "Oliver's Twist" suddenly ends...

-Marc.

I like NADS.

Don't know. I'm gonna take a guess and say its because of the instrumental.

I didn't like Outcry at first but it got better through repeated listens. Definitely helps if you hear the song live. That was my final decision.

TheOutlawXanadu

I love "Outcry". It's one of my top three on ADTOE, alongside BITS and BAI.

Yea I still refer to it as Shaman's Trance :D

What was shindler's lisp?

(sorry for off topic!)

I just listened to Outcry again... still enjoy it

Not among my favorites from ADTOE (anymore), but it's still pretty good - I absolutely love the epic chorus and the little mellow part right after the instrumental craziness. I also think the instrumental section sounds much better constructed than the one in TDEN, for example.

The TDEN instrumental section is actually extremely well constructed, one of their best, much better than people will give it due credit for. It's well thought out, with rhythmically interesting variations of the descending chromatic theme through varying patterns of time signatures and harmonies.
Outcry feels very thrown together just to sound crazy, with nothing particularly memorable.

Metropolis Part 3

I love Outcry!! Best track on the album to me.

I'd rank the album tracks as follows:

1. Outcry
2. Bridges In The Sky
3. Breaking All Illusions

4. This Is The Life
5. On The Backs Of Angels

6. Lost Not Forgotten
7. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
8. Beneath The Surface
9. Far From Heaven

The Glass Prison is not even related to this discussion.

I just related it.  You can't will it not to be.

But it doesn't have a long instrumental section in the middle of it. In fact, aside from the intro and dueling guitar/keyboard solo section, there are vocals throughout.

You mean, aside from that 3 minute super-repetitive part where there are no vocals, there are vocals?  Yeah, it's more towards the end than most instrumental sections, but it's still an instrumental interlude.  And it breaks the forward progress of the song too much.  I think that's what it has in common with Outcry.

Just wanted to say that I like your avatar :)

Same with New Millennium? These songs aren't superb but it confuses me as to how someone could have a strong negative opinion about them XD.

Outcry seems to be quite popular. I thought the track on ADTOE that got the most flak was Build Me Up, Break Me Down.

nicmos

I love that track.  Different than the usual.  I don't get the hate for that one, maybe people could explain that to me.

Agreed, I loved BMUBMD from the first time I heard it and still do.  Love JLB's vocals....not even sure why, not a song most people would list as his best.

I wasn't crazy about its vocals, but I did love its instrumentation right off the bat. The cool synthetic drum into was something DT has never done before, and the way it just blasts into the main riff is awesome.

I'm feeling this. The instrumentation is pretty good, not great. But btw, I love New Millennium. One of my favorite album openers, actually (second only to 6:00).

I don't get the hate for New Millennium or BMUBMD either. :dunno:
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite

The lyrics for Outcry are the weakest entry on the last album.  And the high anticipation of the Dance of Eternity-esque (which we now know to be more Metroplolis-esque) instrumental section didn't payoff for some of us as much as we had hoped.

darkshade

The thread title should be changed to, "Why did I think everyone hates Outcry so much?"

WDADU

I'm among the "Outcry"-haters. Some parts are tolerable, at best, but that middle section takes me out of the song completely.

1neeto

I like that song. I remember the 8:43 part gave me goose bumps when I first heard it. It's of my favorite moments of ADTOE.

adameastment

I wish I could have posted this sooner:

"Wait for the outcry"

Pretty apt.

Outcry is my favorite right behind another track. (Don't wanna spoil my top 50 list.)

As if there is anyone on this forum that doesn't know your #1 :P

:blush

Lucidity

Near as I can tell, Outcry is universally enjoyed. But I do dislike it quite a bit. Except for the amazing intro.

I spent a whole dollar just for you, DTF.

I'm pretty amazed they have Outcry on that.

Love NM and Outcry is probably my #3 on the album (behind Shaman's Trance and Beneath the Surface... probably tied with BAI)

I've definitely accidentally called it the Shaman's Trance before.

In fact, I just searched the word "trance" DT-side and this came up: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=32976.msg1333616#msg1333616

As did this:
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=32517.msg1301589#msg1301589

And this:
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=27789.msg1120774#msg1120774

And this:
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=28121.msg1070139#msg1070139

All post-release. It happens! I certainly do it. A lot. Usually go back and catch it quite quickly, but I've missed it at least once. Something in my head must go, "You know, it's the shaman one," in the split second where I'm fumbling for a name.
