I love outcry. Actually on my top 50, mainly because of the chorus..  :metal

ArchVile

i love Outcryyyyyyyyy
Lost not forgotten,  bridges and outcry and Breaking are the true adtoe experience!

Lolzeez

Outcry is my favorite right behind another track. (Don't wanna spoil my top 50 list.)

As if there is anyone on this forum that doesn't know your #1 :P

I actually wasn't too impressed in the beginning with the overall song, but the instrumental section did have me hooked, it's pure awesome
but over time the song has grown on me but like some other people have pointed out
i think the melodies and lyrics don't flow well together
and new  milleniu is a great song

This strikes me as one of those songs that is almost impossible to hate if you were already a Dream Theater fan.  The main melody (heavy riff along that orchestral keyboard melody) and the instrumental section both SCREAM "classic Dream Theater."  But to each their own.

I love Outcry. It's my second favourite from ADTOE, if it wasn't for the out of place instrumental it could even be the best, as the intro, verses, and chorus are some of the best parts of the album.

The Letter M

For the record, I enjoy "Outcry". It's not terrible or even bad, it's more than good, but only nearly great. I think I'd rank it equal to BITS and LNF, and all three of those under BAI.

For me Outcry sounds a bit chaotic. It's one of my least favorite songs off ADTOE. Im starting to like Build me Up, more than Outcry lol.

As far as New Millenium goes, that's a very rocking song. I've always enjoyed it and it's one of my favorites from FII. Loved the heavy riffin along with Sherinian's doubling JP's parts. I miss DS :(

Mladen

I love Outcry, but I have to admit that, of all the songs from A Dramatic turn of events, Outcry took me the most time to get into. James delivers the goods all the way through, and the instrumental section is one the best they've EVER done. Yeah, EVER. In fact, it has to be the wildest one behind Metropolis, as far as I'm concerned. We need something this crazy on the upcoming album...

Jaq

Outcry's only behind BAI and BITS for me on ADTOE, so I certainly don't hate it. There probably is a contingent of people out there that dislike it because it has a instrumental section that could be called shredding for the sake of shredding, but I think it fits myself.

New Millennium sucks big time though, and I never get the love for it myself.  :lol

I like the Budokan version of NM way better. The bass in the beginning until the vocals is just phenomenal to me

The instrumental section is a big chunk of the song that doesn't fit the toooooone, and it's the typical instrumental noodling, with nothing memorable. The rest of the song would be ok without it, but I still find it dull to the point where it's not worth listening to.

I think it's the weakest song on the album. The other 3 long tracks of the album are much better.

My thoughts too. I also find nothing interesting about verses and choruses. The instrumental section has a few nice parts but in all it's just out of TOOOOOONE as blob said.

On ADTOE only. Everyone knows my number 1 is Blind Faith.

This is pretty much my thought as well. I mean, I can completely understand why people wouldn't outright love it (I don't love it, and I'd rank it lower than most ADTOE songs), but it follows a classic DT formula and does it well (the riff is really nice, the chorus is very catchy, etc.).

You guys never heard of the method of writing known as Through-Composed? Plenty of prog bands and classical composers use it.

Okay, everyone who loves Outcry should rise up, be counted, stand strong, and unite. In that order.

This exactly. :metalol:
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

I play Outcry on those internet jukeboxes when I'm in a public place that has them. Lots of people off these boards seem to really hate that song.

I'll try to give an honest answer, even though everyone's already chimed in.

If you took about 3 minutes of instrumental section out of Outcry, it would be really good.  The beginning and end are pretty strong.  The riffs and vocal line are catchy.  But once the instrumental section gets going, it goes off the rails and you forget what song you're even listening to.  That, and the instrumental section doesn't seem to have a focus of ideas.  If it does, it went over my head.  I'm not ashamed to admit it if there are ideas there that I didn't get.  But it seems odd relative to most DT instrumental sections, where they are able to keep the flavor of the song throughout.  The ones I would compare it to the most are Dance of Eternity and Glass Prison.

The ideas in the instrumental are good by themselves, but I don't think they're connected very well.  The band had great ideas, but it seems like they just wanted to throw all of em in there with the kitchen sink without editing themselves.

(I love NM.  But that's not what the thread is about.)

Dellers

While there are a couple of better songs on the album Outcry is still great IMO. New Millenium is probably my favorite or second favorite track from its album as well.

Metropolis Part 1
The Dark Eternal Night
Outcry

These are the only songs in the DT catalog that have wild, long instrumental sections in the middle of them, that deviate from the main feel of the song, and are through-composed (thus no repetition). Endless Sacrifice, Sacrificed Sons, and The Ministry of Lost Souls do not count, as their instrumental sections have repeated riffs and reprises. The Glass Prison is not even related to this discussion.

But it doesn't have a long instrumental section in the middle of it. In fact, aside from the intro and dueling guitar/keyboard solo section, there are vocals throughout.

MoraWintersoul

I don't have that much of a problem with the instrumental section, but Jordan kind of loses me with his choice of sounds, and it's not a common problem I have, so it just makes it a little bit more frustrating for me. Otherwise, it's an okay song.

You mean, aside from that 3 minute super-repetitive part where there are no vocals, there are vocals?  Yeah, it's more towards the end than most instrumental sections, but it's still an instrumental interlude.  And it breaks the forward progress of the song too much.  I think that's what it has in common with Outcry.

Love NM and Outcry is probably my #3 on the album (behind Shaman's Trance and Beneath the Surface... probably tied with BAI)

I didn't think anyone still called it that!

Maybe I should ask why my version of "Oliver's Twist" suddenly ends...
