Simple poll I decided to make since I listened to ACOS for the first time a few weeks ago and I just can't get enough of it. Although each section is magnificent, there's bound to be some you like more. Personally, I like The Crimson Sunset best. Perfect end to the song, great lyrics and a lot of emotion coming from JLB. Close second is probably Another World.

TheGreatPretender

Another World, hands down. Although I love the song all throughout, I feel like it goes downhill after Another World. Like Another World in itself felt very conclusive to the whole epic. But again, I still love it for what it is

Since I'm forced to pick, I chose Another world. Such an amazing song.

senecadawg2

Another World. It's my favorite section of ACOS, as well as every other DT song ever made.

The Letter M

When I did the DT Multi-Movement Songs Survivor a couple of years ago back in 2010, I did ACOS first and these were the results:

1. V. Another World
2. VII. The Crimson Sunset
3. IV. The Darkest Of Winters
4. II. Innocence
5. I. The Crimson Sunrise
6. III. Carpe Diem
7. VI. The Inevitable Summer

Looks like the votes for "Another World" are definitely in-line with these results! I shall be doing the DT Multi-Movement Songs Survivor again after I complete my Twelve-Step Suite Survivors!

It really doesn't surprise me that The Inevitable Summer was last, I mean, it gets absolutely buried by the Darkest of Winters and Another world. Following them is impossible. The first four sections could almost give Metropolis a run for its money. Almost.

Cedar redaC

Innocence. From the first time I heard the chorus, I knew I had to buy it.

Carpe Diem

"Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night

She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, "I Love You...
Good-bye"

SeRoX

Another World. The most intense part of the song. James just makes it sound epic.

"Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night

She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye

That almost made me select Carpe Diem.

But, you know, it's a boring and safe choice, but it's mine - Another World is not only my fave ACOS section, it's one of my favorite things ever.

I have to go with The Inevitable Summer. I love the feel and mood of this section, both in the studio and LSFNY version, for different reasons.

Also, while I agree with the Another World love for the beauty of the music and vocal performance, I can't stand some of the lyrics in this section. I generally find ACOS to be some of MP's better work, but the following comes across as whiny to me:

Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what, don't let him be
Let's feed upon his misery
Then string him up for all the world to see

This rubs me the wrong way every time and is the only part of ACOS that I don't like. Great music though!

I said Another World first, you're all copying me. Conformists. ;D

Another World.

I know, I'm safe and boring. :'(

Indeed. Innocence or The Darkest Of Winters is the correct answer. Too bad Jordan ruined the latter with the honky-tonk.

The ragtime is a lot better than the unmemorable original part.

Not a chance, the original was a short and cool piano bit, while the other one completely deviates from the mood and feel of the song. Of course it's memorable, it's silly and catchy. It was fine when they were all goofing around with the Simpsons theme and such on Live Scenes, but that should have been the end of it; instead, Jordan got stuck on that level. I wouldn't have minded if he had changed that part to something else, but that bit really should have stayed in When The Water Breaks.

I disagree. The original to me does nothing. It's not melodic, it's not emotional, it's not memorable, to me it's just a generic and redundant obligatory solo because the guitar and bass had one. It's just there for the sake of being prog.
JR's solo was memorable and fun, and added something different to the piece, and imo feels needed. When I listen to the original, it just sounds empty without it now.

To each his own. I actually heard that part in Instrumedley first and I got used to that version before I had the chance to listen to the original. I remember how thrilled I was to hear something more in tone with the rest of the song. Actually, save for that part and the organ solo, I prefer Jordan's playing throughout the song, but I would've preferred if he had came up with something more serious instead of recycling a cheesy tune.

I can get not liking the silly bits, and I can get loving them... but I don't at all get what could make the ragtime so much worse than the Simpsons and the baseball thingy.

But, hey! I like all renditions of the song. That's like, rather than love, which might be why I can't find the energy to have any stronger feelings for the LSFNY changes than "Great, quite good fun," but there we go.

David Prater knew Dream Theater's music better than Dream Theater did. Since they parted with him they've done nothing but flounder.

No? Still not working? Fine. The fish on Jordan Rudess's keyboard knew Dream Theater's music better than Dream Theater did. Since they parted with her they've done nothing but... oh, you know what's coming.

Now where'd you get that idea? My problem was that Jordan decided to stick with the joke after everyone else had moved on. He played it like that on every live version of ACOS I ever saw/heard, while Petrucci sometimes tried new(but not goofy) stuff.

I usually think of this as one solid song, without parts and my favorite parts of the song have always been what I call the "hypocrite" section, followed by what I always saw as the instrumental break of the song. So, Another World and The Darkest of Winters.
