So what do you think is the album with the best / coolest / wisest name (judge by the name only, not by the music the album contains or the artwork, etc)? The worst-named album? I'll personally vote for Octavarium as the album with the coolest name, and A Change of Seasons as a close second. The worst-named album? Frankly, I'd have to say it's probably A Dramatic Turn of Events for its triviality and general unoriginality or Black Clouds & Silver Linings (it seems to be too much of a mouthful to me; and no, that's not what she said). Anyway, share your thoughts here please.

And forgive me on the off chance that I've misspelled any album names.

SuperTaco

I went with WDADU because it makes me imagine what it would be like to mix the intense emotions and freedom of a dream with the clarity and reality of waking life. Imagine you woke up in the real world but with the ability to manipulate and change, just like in a dream.... amazing.

54_diplomats

Yeah I went with Octavarium. Album name sounds cool, album art is cool and it's in my top albums so that helps lol.

Zydar

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence sounds cool.

SystematicThought

Train of Thought. Combined with the artwork, it sounds mature and not as cheesy as other DT titles.

wasteland

Images, or Octavarium. They are both cool names. Voted for the former, though.  :tup

I think 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence' wins out slightly over Octavarium for coolest name.

I can't really decide on a worst. I think all the others are pretty much at the same level after the two I mentioned already.

MrBoom_shack-a-lack

Mertopolis!  :metal

Six degrees of inner turbulence wins for me, it's a cool title!

Mertopolis!  :metal

Scenes From a Mammary? :lol :P

I went with Train of Thought, but I could have just as easily gone with Images or WDADU.
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite

Octavarium is just a cool word for some reason. A Dramatic Turn of Events is the worst name IMO, I cringed slightly when I first heard the name.

fadetoblackdude7

I voted Black Clouds & Silver Linings......amazing album title! The whole color aspect is just badass.

Stonestef

I went with WDADU but it was a tough choice, every title except from Awake is great.

Pols Voice

Scenes from a Memory.

SDOIT makes me think of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Pretty much the reasons I voted for Train of Thought right there.

Let's see.

When Dream and Day Unite is pretentious and young, but not awful.

Images and Words is okay, not great.

Awake is boring as hell despite being their best album.

Falling into Infinity is good but really pretentious as well.

Scenes from a memory is okay.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is actually pretty cool.

Train of Thought is horrible.

Octavarium is an awesome title.

Systematic Chaos is awful.

Black Clouds is a terrible title as well.

However, A Dramatic Turn of Events takes the cake as worst title ever.

So the best is Octavarium with Six Degrees in second.

Awake has the coolest name as far as names of albums go.

Nekov

I went with WDADU

I'm also voting Adami as the most pretentious username in the forum

Xenu damnit Brother H, do you just disagree with me to disagree with me or is this part of some holy crusade on the internet?

I think Six Degrees has the coolest name. It feels like it pictures the albums music goodly

Right now my top three best names would be Images, Awake, and Octavarium.

Mosh

Implode

The best:

1. Falling into Infinity
2. Octavarium
3. Awake

The worst:

10. A Dramatic Turn of Events
11. Systematic Chaos

SystematicThought

It still puzzles me as to how the band thought A Dramatic Turn Of Events was a good album title. Had the band gone with Bridges In The Sky like they originally were going to call the album, that would have won my vote.

Well by band, you clearly mean John Petrucci.

And this is the same guy who thought the lyrics to The Count of Tuscany were good lyrics.

I went with Systematic Chaos. It has the word "chaos" in it, and that makes it sound cool. That's my reasoning. :lol

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought are also cool names. A lot of the rest sound too um.... "proggy"?

Yes, I was just trying to equalize blame.  :lol

And although bad, I didn't find them horrible, for what it's worth.

This exactly...

I picked Falling Into Infinity. It's such a thought-provoking phrase, and the cover always makes me visualise someone looking at two other versions of himself arranged in a triangle, in an endless ocean.

The Letter M

Went with SDOIT...to me, it's up there with other awesome (really long) prog album names like Tales From Topographic Oceans, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, In The Court Of The Crimson King, The Dark Side Of The Moon, and other such classics.

I also really like Metropolis, Part II: Scenes From A Memory - any new fans seeing that FULL album title would be intrigued enough to wonder "Well, where's part one?" and likely get Images And Words shortly thereafter out of sheer curiosity.

Octavarium is clever and witty, but for some might sound awkward, much like other single-word prog albums like Tormato or Abacab.

Awake is nice, being their only other single-word album title, and being on a classic album brings it up a bit, but it is a bit of a boring title by itself, and really does not describe any part of the album on face value along, but for the morbidly curious, it's a draw-in. Reminds me of other might-be-boring titles like Relayer, Drama, Duke, Islands, Animals, and some Rush single-word album titles.

The others range from good to okay, and all run the gamut of serious to clever, but it's not until one has the album, listens, understands it from the musical and visual (album art and presentation) point of view do the album titles really make more sense.
