I really just want some FII outtakes.  But that won't happen.

Assuming that each night has mostly different setlist they would enlarge "acoustic set" and add "speak to me". At least I hope.

With all due respect, this is the last thing this DVD needs. There are too many good songs in their catalog, including a new album full of them, that should be included over some reworked/demo versions of mediocre ones.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Raise The Knife is one of DT's best songs, period. Nothing mediocre about it. Having said that, Raise The Knife WAS on Score, so no need for it to be on the new one.

What I would love on the new DVD (apart from specific songs and commentary) is a bit of JLB banter with the crowd.

James is the worst crowd-banter'er ever.  Everything he says is awkward.  It's just not good.

This is true. I found it awkward when he stated at the PNC show that no one knows about the venue. I understood his point which was the crowd turn out was bad, but DT had played a bunch of times before which is why i thought it was weird to say that.

Implode

At the Chicago show he said he doesn't like talking to the audience much. He just prefers to sing an awesome show.

I'd have to agree. I like LaBrie, but he always comes off as stiff and insincere. It's odd- after all these years you would think he'd become a stronger frontman.

Progmetty

There isn't one song that was a reject of any of the 90's DT albums that I like.

In the context of a DVD id agree. In a live show, its nice to have the band connect with the crowd. It certainly doesn't take away from the concert, but can make a show a bit more personal. Sometimes it can make things worse as well.

I beg to disagree. In Milano, last February, his interaction with the crow was spot-on, from 15 joke after 6,00 to the eulogy of the fan that died in the shipwreck.

TAC

James commanded the stage the other night in Boston. His banter was right on, too.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Cool Chris

James always seems more awkward on DVDs than he does on stage at other shows that are not filmed. Which is weird, as otherwise he is getting more and more hilarious and awesome in front of the camera.

With all the shows I've seen (52), I'd have to say that it varies per show - there are times when he has really been on it, and there are times when I would think "where is he going with this?" or "what is the point?" So I think both viewpoints are valid (those who say he does a great job, as well as those who say he does a bad job).

Agree with cramx3. And in terms of the banter making things worse, look no further than Geoff Tate telling the crowd at a QR show literally that they "suck", just weeks before being booted out of the band. Yeah, that will really encourage an audience to get into the show...   :o
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Mikael Ã…kerfeldt (Opeth) is one of the best when it comes to stage banter.

I hate his timing when it comes to talking over instrumental parts live.  The most obvious example that comes to mind is at the end of the long instrumental section in Beyond This Life on the Budokan DVD.  It hits the climax, and he yells, "Aright, give it up for these guys," right over it; that is terrible timing.  And he does stuff like that all of the time.

Or him screaming "THIS IS JOON P'CCIUCCEEEI" at the climax of Hollow Years solo... that one annoyed me for years  :lol

James just seems so relaxed since MP is not there. (Not trying to beat a dead horse or to derail the thread!) Plus, I love the fact the he doesn't (or rarely) swears on stage anymore. It seems to have coincided as well.

I like it too!

Don't know if this is more important than the discussion on JLB's stage banter, but there are pics on the DT Facebook page, one is JP with Adrian Belew and the other shows JMX and Tony Levin (I think it was him?) with the caption of "what could they be discussing?" so... do you think it's one of those "stellar" things JLB mentioned? Guest performances?

For future reference, whenever the DVD is discussed when we've all watched it, you must mention the word stellar in every post, for everything that was new and unexpected.

SystematicThought

JLB is sometimes awkward with his banter on Score.

Before RTK, when he goes "We dug through....the DT....archives" in a very weird accent.

And in the end you can tell he forgot how to say Jamshied's last name.

"Thanks to Jamshied....Sharifi... and the Octavarium Orchestra"

I will never forget the way he said "Welcome to... Radio City Music Hall IN NEW YORK CITEEEEEEEEYY" before Under A Glass Moon!

:lol I know what you mean

I always imagine that he's a parent on a trip with his family or something just shouting that when they get to RCMH.

He's either that or a tour guide introducing the theater to his tour group

I think he's just a little out of breath still when he comes to that. Having just nailed a couple of high spots in Innocence Faded.

I have to agree with TAC, since MP has gone its like James feels now he can take the reigns and be the frontman properly, whereas maybe in the past MP was the 'frontman' so to speak and James was just there to sing. And although I much prefer this setup, I do miss how active MP was in rallying up the crowd.

He doesn't feel pressured to "be a badass" on stage (or even with his vocals on ADToE) anymore.  It never seemed genuine anyway.

Bring out Levin during the DT set for When the Water Breaks and heads will be exploding all over the place.

WildeSilas

I thought he was great in Dallas. He kept relaying the scores for some game (basketball/football/no idea?) to the crowd and joking around with JP about it. When they did the acoustic set, he explained why he liked the idea in a very sincere and heartfelt way too. Much more relaxed without MP there and he interacted quite a bit without being too 80's/cheerleader. I was impressed with his performance and charisma that night, which was a huge surprise for me (it was my first DT show) since I had always kind of considered him the weak link. He was phenomenal.

wolfandwolfandwolf

He was also great in Dallas this time around.  Very commanding stage presence.  Especially when John's guitar was off during the BITS intro - he came out after song 2 and handled it like a champ, even commended the road crew.

I never got that impression at all. JLB was always the frontman, and the one addressing the crowd. MP was just active during songs to also connect with the crowd. JLB has always been a little awkward on stage, and that had nothing to do with MP.
