I went to the last european gig (luxembourg) at the meet and greet. I was able to talk with John Petrucci about the forthcoming dvd, he said that it will be filmed during the south america leg !

rock on !!

There you go.

This is amazing.

If that's true, I will piddle my pants with joy. I don't even mean that as a figure of speech either.

So, now we know that there will be a SA leg (it was already obvious, but I think this is the first "official" announcement). Will the DVD be recorded in Brazil? Or Venezuela? Or maybe Chile, once again?

MajorMatt

I'm hoping if this is true they also bring along the full 'A' rig that they use in the US/European shows as from what I've seen they tend to take less stuff to the SA shows. But still this is awesome news the SA crowds are nuts!

The Letter M

Perhaps we can hope that all the SA shows will be 2.5hr+ "An Evening With" shows, seeing as how they don't tour down in SA very often?? Then we could possibly get nearly ALL the songs they've played this tour, or at least the ones that haven't been released on audio/video official live releases.

any south america would be great!

i had the joy to work with Mr Rudess recording the premiere of explorations and it was an increible experience, meeting this family and be able to record and live every second of the rehearsals was GREAT, and if i could help him and the guys again ill do it for sure!

But like i said before... any show from south america would be great!

I hope they pull out some classics like LtL, Metropolis, and maybe playing songs like Octavarium or ACOS with this new lineup. It would be awesome to see those songs on a DVD with Mangini (with his interpretation of the drums, of course).

As nice as that would be, with the lack of DVD last tour I think they just have too much other material that's much more important to cover before they play songs that have already been featured on DVDs.
We already have definitive live versions of ACOS/Octavarium/LTL/Metropolis, but no live version of anything from the past two albums yet, plus a lot of other songs that are well overdue for a live release.

Mladen

Great to know it will be recorded at the South American leg, I called it!  :metal

Kotowboy

Just hoping for a good balance between proggy / long / short / light / heavy.

Not *too* much emphasis on ADToE

And Budokan / Score level of quality / multi-cam shoot.

Not CIM level of half-assed-ery.

Jinx

Heres hoping for a Blu Ray version too. BITS, Outcry and BAI in HD? Sweeet!

I would also love to witness The Glass Prison or A Nightmare to Remember too (especially with a wild crowd).

Apart from that, bring it on!!

Wasn't it Portnoy who placed such a big emphasis on never repeating any songs on a live release? Serious question, I actually can't remember 100%. If so, though, that might mean that the other 4 (and Mangini) might not have any problem playing, say, Endless Sacrifice or The Root Of All Evil on this upcoming DVD.

Not disputing your main point, mind (I doubt we'll see ACOS or Octavarium here either), more thinking out loud.

jcmistat

South American fans will go nuts especially if they know they're being recorded. I can't help to think of Rush in Rio the huge crowd was a spectacle.

I'm sure DVD setlists would have been handled by Portnoy, but I'm hoping the rest of the band follow a similar "rule" there, because it just made sense in every way.
I love the regular DVD releases, but people would lose interest purchasing them if you're going to be hearing all the same songs, unless they've got something significantly new to add to the arrangements.

But I'm not too worried, as they've already played a lot of material with MM in the band, and I think they could easily put together a setlist for the show without repeating anything, or needing to learn any additional songs.
Throw in everything from ADTOE they've played so far, plus TCOT/Wither, and you'd already have yourself a lot of new material.

Ice9ine

Seriously, why not film it in Australia??

Both their shows in Melbourne (SC and BCSL) the crowd was far more manic than any of the crowds on their current DVDs and I mean that will all due respect.

Seeing DT in Australia is not a common occurance. They have only ever been here twice with back to back albums. We have had a taste of finally attending a DT show and we want more. The crowds are very excited and verbal also and I can tell you that if a packed out Aussie crowd got a whiff that it was being filmed for an official release.....well it would be off the charts.

I am also of the understanding that they bring their full show because we are generally after the Japan leg of the tour.

I am happy for a HD concert filmed anywhere, Australia though makes as much sense as anywhere else imo.

BlobVanDam

I believe we got the A-rig on the SC tour, but the B-rig on the BCASL tour (because I never got to see JR's "tree" stand in person that I designed). If they were filming a show here in Australia, they could plan to bring the A-rig though.
But I think South America only gets the B rig too, so that wouldn't be an issue, relatively speaking.

I would love for DT to film a show in Australia (out of purely selfish reasons, of course), but I think South American crowds put most places to shame, and it would make for an awesome looking DVD. An official DVD with the crowd of the Santiago Chile 2005 show would just be amazing.

Kotowboy

I wouldn't care if the set was exactly the same as Budokan. We're due a new DVD with Mangini and James' new voice etc.

It can't be any worse than CIM so i'm looking forward to whatever they bring out.

I'd love to see a DT live DVD with the crowd going insane!

cramx3

The beginning of the root of all evil from the Santiago dvd is insane. Makes a lot of sense for them to do a pro dvd there, especially if they can bring the full stage show.

Jarzombek

Latin America has the best crowds of the world. "Rush in Rio" is a great example.

???

It's on the AToE tour. They've been playing the entire album except This if the life and Lost not Forgotten.

SeRoX

I hope they will give 2,5 -3 hours long concert with many songs, like Score, An Evening With style. To be honest, I don't like the idea that separated songs from various shows will be filmed.

Millais

awesome to see that it's going to be filmed in South America. from the clips that JR posted on youtube from the last tour, that seems like the place for the wildest crowds.

they have a great setlist at the moment, but it'd be cool to see some new things introduced such as Lost Not Forgotten etc

Rob801

As much as I love most of the material that others are hoping will be pulled out for an Evening With concert, I still would love to see them play LNF anf TITL   ;).

Latin America has the worst crowds of the world. "Rush in Rio" is a great example.

Fixed.

I've brought this up before but STFU and stop singing along with the music.  Go ahead and sing along with the WORDS, cheer, clap, "HEY! HEY! HEY!", fist pump, air drum, etc, but FFS I want to hear the guitar solo, piano intro, riff etc, NOT 100,000 people singing the guitar solo, piano intro, riff, etc.  Stop clapping along to quiet, sombre moments where it's completely inappropriate.

Rush in Rio is unwatchable to me cuz the crowd overpowers everything.  But, hey, if there's an audio option to turn off the crowd noise or at least turn it down then sweet.  Or if they mix it nicely and have enough of the crowd but not too much then great.  But if not then I'll be sad.  I'm sure it's a great live atmosphere and I'd enjoy it if I were actually there with bad seats and audio but when I watch it at home in a controlled environment I want Dream Theater, not people screaming the whole time pretending to be Dream Theater.

Europe is awful for this too.  Japan is too quiet.  I'd say North America has a great balance of crowd noise-to-music.

Just so nobody gets offended or takes my post as a literal bashing of anyone's culture, here's the token winky emoticon:   ;)

Good point... Regardless of where it's filmed, I hope that the crowd is mixed at an appropriate level & also no "Fake" crowd noise is added.

Btw i uploaded the jam section from Jorge Glem/Jordan Rudess/Adolfo Herrera when Jordan came to venezuela for the explorations premiere:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WJ4pjNrgYBo

You can check it over there!

Cant wait to know here the new bluray/dvd from dream theater will be recorded!

cramx3

I personally like the crowd singing to the music. To me it adds to the "live" version of the song.  If I didnt want to hear any crowd, Id listen to the album.  However, it IS nice to also have live versiond with a tamer crowd and all of DTs concert released have had tame crowds. I think its time for them to release a more wild crowd concert and I think this tour is the best because it shows how thw band is on fire at the moment.

I couldn't disagree more.  To me the crowd singing along to Rush in Rio is what makes it such a wonderful live release (despite the poor sound quality).  Likewise, Iron Maiden fans singing along during Rock in Rio (especially during Fear of the Dark) really adds to the ambiance.

SystematicThought

Or it could have the same audience sound over and over like on Van Halen's live album.

No offense, but this is an awful opinion.  If you want to hear every nuance in a band's performance, listen to the studio albums.

PetFish

... and if you want to not hear the music at all, attend or watch a show in Latin America.

I just hope this release is either a) mixed nicely to include the crowd but not so much as to ruin the music or b) has a band-only audio option.
