A bit of an average bunch for me, probably in about the right spot. I'd rank TROAE similarly, and the rest probably lower, but I like 'em all regardless. :)

Root of All Evil is an amazing live song! It changes the energy of the crowd in an amazingly good way.

That's great! Can't wait to see it live then.

Not usually a fan of music from pre2000 because the sound of old ruins it for me.
I dunno WTF this means.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

It means we get to laugh at him for classifying anything pre-2000 as "old".

Doesn't necessarily mean it is old, but something about the sound quality sounds outdated to me, therefore "sound of old" ;)

Also, next update will be a bit delayed... I accidently deleted the write-ups for it... Sorry.

Shouldn't be a problem... you've been posting at a fast rate so far anyway. Just don't take a month to post 5 song titles like some of the others have done  :rollin

BlackInk

Here we go, second half of the list. Sorry for the delay. Like I said, I accidently deleted my write-ups...

25 - Repentance (Systematic Chaos)

I never understood why this song is so disliked. Perhaps people expected a continuation of the 12-step suite in the same vein as the previous ones, extremely heavy and aggressive, and were disappointed when they got this?

I however love this song. It has a great mood and is a great relaxing feeling that just makes me feel good. The solo is also one of my favorite ones from Petrucci. The guests' spoken words are great and further adds to the depths of the song and the suite. The outro is grand and epic and concludes a song full of great decisions as to how to continue the suite.

24 - The Mirror (Awake)

CHUG-CHUG-CHUG. CHUG-CHUG-CHUG. CHUG-CHUG-CHUG. Making a classic riff out of something that simple deserves some credit. Also, there's a quick tease of my favorite part of Space-Dye Best in there so that's definitely a plus.

23 - Home (Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory)

Ah, the WHOMP WHOMP song. I love the oriental style in the beginning and I guess at some parts through the whole song. One of the best songs of SFaM, it contains some of the albums best and most memorable themes. Also the Metropolis references are cool, like the spoken "new love that's born for each one that has died", and the "Victoria watches and thoughtfully smiles". The porn sextion doesn't bother me as much as it seems to do others, it's a part of the story and I think it fits.

22 - Take the Time (Images & Words)

The first I&W song so far. It's a shame this album is old, because it has some seriously great music. Like this song, it's a part of the foundations of Dream Theater's progressive sounds. Very groovy at times, the mellower section after the second chorus is great and the instrumental section that follows is exactly what any fan of prog should like and surely inspired many music writers. Like 4:50, it sounds just like something Haken would do.

21 - Space-Dye Vest (Awake)

Those melodies, those perfect melodies... The theme that begins at 1:06 wins this song. Also:

"And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend
And I'll never be open again
And I'll have no more dreams to defend
And I'll never be open again"

So great.

Scorpion

Great songs, all of them are on my list! :tup

Also, high five for your love of Repentance. :hifive:

54_diplomats

Nice. The Mirror, Take the Time and Space Dye Vest are all top 10 for me though.

Take The Time is the only song worth being that high (and higher).

I would rank TTT way higher and probably SDV too, as of late (Milena, your influnce...  :blush). On the other hand, I still fail to appreciate Home as it should.

Yes! Before you came SDV was approximately 44th. Now I would rank it 18sh or 20sh, depending on the day. :)

Repentance is one of their worst song IMHO and i would rank SDV a bit lower....the others are very nice!!!

Don't you like SDV? I didn't know :D What is that you hate about the song? :)

DebraKadabra

I thought that was common knowledge. :lol

And no, I don't like it.  Never have.  Sounds SO out of place from the rest of the album.  I've TRIED to like it, but... yeah...  :|

This. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. It was probably added right before they launched the album.

You seem to have forgotten about the existence of You Not Me, Never Enough and loads of other DT songs.

I like Never Enough though. Really the only three songs I think deserve to ever be called their worst by anyone are You Not Me, A Rite of Passage, and Build Me Up, Break Me Down.
