Will MP still come back?

I think Portnoy needs to start his own (semi) permanent band. He has proven with his side-projects to be an immensely creative musician who (I am assuming) felt constrained by fan expectation while he was a member of Dream Theater. The lyrics of Never Enough are testament enough to that. I think a new venue for his creativity would be good for both him AND Dream Theater in the long run, because each side will be able to do what they want.

Portnoy seems hurt right now, but in a year or two, he'll probably be doing something he really enjoys, and not worrying about Dream Theater at all.

lodeus

I can see him doing something with members of DT in the future, but I don't think he'll ever be in DT again.

Schleppy

Once things have cooled a little, I'm sure he'll play with them live at some point (the two Mikes behind the biggest Monster there's ever been...I'm drooling on my keyboard). And he'll probably play with some of the guys on side projects. But I'm pretty sure he's never going to rejoin the band.

MP left at a stage where people were criticizing DT for becoming stale and predictable. A reunion with Mike would make everybody expect the return to the old trodden paths. Meaning, it would not be in DT's interest at all to take him back.
It doesn't matter whether MP was responsible for the staleness or not, but his leave gave DT the opportunity for reinvention, and so his return would mean for a lot of people the return to the old ways.

SystematicThought

Is it wrong to say that I won't miss MP all that much, especially after seeing how the band is doing now?

perfey

Nope, I dont think so, but maybe, as others have said, he will work do some reunion shows in the future. Here“s a nice little interview btw that Mike posted on his twitter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VurgS52G7Ls where he talks about a future band and the support from the DT fans.

I feel the same way, though I noticed how well the band does even before seeing Mike Mangini's the new member. It just became a lot more practical.

Frosthawk

I don't forsee Portnoy ever coming back to Dream Theater now. I definitely thought it'd be temporary right after he announced his departure but now it seems like Mangini is sticking around (as he should).

Has anything been said recently of Liquid Tension Experiment? That might be the closest thing now.

From the documentary, sounds like they kicked Portnoy out of that too and replaced him with Marco  :lol

Kidding, but Minnemann hinted at a JP, JR collaboration later down the road

I doubt I'll get the chance to miss him.  He'll be doing so much other work that I'll be listening to that missing him would never happen.   :lol

Well I guess that too. I mean the guy is going to be more active than ever now that he is open

I for one haven't enjoyed any of his side work (apart from LTE) and I feel if he keeps indulging himself in these self gratifying "projects" then he might just fade into obscurity. If they make him happy then sure, do as many as you want, but there comes a point when you have to stop serving appetizers and bring on the entree!

Just like that reunion Maiden did with Bruce Dickinson, right  ;) ;) ;)

But, uh, I don't want Mike back for awhile at least. I want to see the band grow a bit with Mangini. If Mike comes back in 10 years or so to do some reunion thing I'll be cool with that.

skydivingninja

Well, Bruce only came back because Adrian came back.  When Adrian left and Bruce was still in the band, that's when Maiden took a downhill turn.  The analogy isn't quite airtight.

Bandit Manatee

Right now it seems everyone is excited for Mangini and the new album (I know I am), but I guarantee you that if their is a DT portnoy reunion ten years from now, the same people will flip out and act like it is the coolest thing to ever happen.  Time is funny that way.

I didnt realize there were so many MP haters
I don't really think anyone here is a hater. Most of the fans love MP and appreciate everything he's done for the past 25 years.

However, it would be kinda awkward to see him coming back to DT, considering:
1. Mike Mangini is so thankful for this job
2. MP kinda said publicly how personally he took anything that DT has done/said following the departure
3. DT had to explain everything they said following MP's reaction
4. Things got a bit ugly, at least publicly, due to 2 and 3
5. MP already tried to come back, and DT shut his offer down. Also, they didn't tell him they shut his offer down personally (but through lawyers, and that was perfectly legit and logical in my opinion but who cares), and he seemed to be kinda pissed about that (at least by the post in his forum where he talked about it).

Plus, most of us appreciate Mangini. Whether one appreciates him less or more than MP, it's be sad if Mangini departs from DT any way you look at it.
you need to watch some recent MP interviews your to caught up in drama along with the rest of this forum.
If you don't like this forum, feel free to discontinue your use.  There are no MP haters here, and we've all seen his interviews.
maybe next time before attacking members of this forum do yourself a favor and read what they post.

I didn't attack anyone.  I read what you posted and made a suggestion.  Do yourself a favor and read what I posted.

Ravenheart

I'm not trying to be an ass, but I feel like Mike is the reason why I haven't liked anything Dream Theater has done in the pat 10 or so years.

Gorille85

I love Mike as a drummer and as a person. I don't wish to see him back though.

IGWT

Nah, I don't see it, and don't really want to.  The guy hasn't written a new fill since 1994, so if he thought things were stale, he could have worked on his own craft and brought something to the table... you know, be the change you wish for and all that.

Dynia

No, I don't think he will. Unless MM stays in the band, they probably won't let him come back. And I don't want that to happen.

Kyo

I honestly think it'd be better for everyone involved (including MP!) if he didn't return anytime soon.

Cant see it ever happening and I dont think I would want him back now despite how much I look up to him as a drummer.

This post, and ReapSta's right above it, pretty much sum up my sentiments on the matter.

I'd love to see MP play with Dream Theater again, maybe not full time, because its going to be great to have Mangini behind the kit for DT (and i cant wait for the new album!) I think without MP in the band, dream theater are going to open up more i think, and the "heavy" influance of the band will fade, Im thinking the new album will be like awake (also with JMX wrighting lyrics now.). But no, i dont see MP coming back anytime soon, maybe for the best!

I wouldn't want him back either after he suggested the band split up for 5 years and then bitched about me in the press when I didn't want to, and then went to play with a pop metal band but came crawling back after he got sacked....

Despite not liking the tone of this at all, I can't find anything about it I disagree with.

2Timer likes this.

As far as entire albums, no, but they've had a decent amount of gems. Maybe I should have worded it differently.

Aniland

Wow, so everything post-Scenes From a Memory? It must feel weird to not be impressed by this band's entire latter half of their career (soon to become more than that).

j

I dunno, I don't think DT have written a really good album since SDOIT, but I still like quite a few songs from the later albums.  I think it's a legitimate opinion. *shrug*

Aniland

Ah absolutely. I just can't imagine some of the songs from those albums not being incredible to DT fans (Octavarium, Six Degrees, In the Presence of Enemies, etc.)

hefdaddy42

There are plenty of fans who don't care for those songs.

tri.ad

The fact that some people find it baffling that most of DT's output in the last ten years could be disliked is... baffling.

Not that I dislike most of their work since 2000, though.

I think for a good amount of people some time after 6DOIT DT switched from "excellent albums with occasional mediocre tune" to "mediocre albums with occasional excellent tune".

I wanted MP back but now, after audition, I won't him in DT.
Huh?

Anyhow, I don't think Mike will ever be a member again, but would be happy if he was. I am very happy for Mangini and how much he loves being chosen the drummer, but if Dream Theater mended fences with Mike in a year or two, and it was genuine, not for financial reasons, I would be thrilled to see him back behind his kit.
The bottom line is I am still a huge fan of both Mike Portnoy and Dream Theater, and look forward to whatever the future holds for both of them and I am extremely pumped for the new DT album and tour.
