It may not make them look bad per say, it would just blow the entire "unveiling" as a "BIG NEWS IN THE WORLD OF PROG METAL DT NAMES NEW DRUMMER" event.

Kinda takes the steam off of a cool opportunity if Jimmy the engineer's tech tweets the news before DT officially releases it.

Exactly.

Others may think it's no big deal. That's their choice. I personally would see it as a big embarrassment to the band

I had not thought about it this way, but I think I agree. It is a very important moment and a leak would almost be a lack of respect to the band. Such a memorable announcement and having it remembered as being a leak would be embarrassing, definitelly.

RoeDent

We should've made a 'place your bets' thread on when they announce the new drummer.

It's beginning to look like we can cross one more off the list of possible announcement dates:

November-December
6 o'clock on a Christmas morning
Day they enter the studio

I find it funny that people would think that they would announce it on the day they go into the studio. They'd probably wanna jam with him in a studio environment before making the announcement. Y'know, get a good chemistry together.

fadetoblackdude7

Shit, this news was random. I mean, since they didn't announce the new guy's name, I figured they'd do it mid-January, and enter the studio at the END of the month lol.

But hey, this is still good news!!

Uh, recent JLB interview said that the management is holding up the announcement, and that the band is going to tell us instantaneously when they get the go-ahead.

It's probable that interview took place, a few weeks ago. So they could make the announcement any moment now.
I agree if the info actually leaks, it will be a missed PR opportunity. Maybe like a countdown to the announcement on dt.net or something like that, that would seriously build up a good buzz.

dedSurroun

Some are taken the non-release of who the drummer is way to seriously.

No one will give a shit, or remember how we found out, a few months from now, and especially not when the album comes out.

I mean, "Yeah, I'm happy X is the new drummer but WTF THAT INFO LEAKED BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED!!! I CAN'T LISTEN TO THE NEW MUSIC!!"

Know what I'm saying?

Yeah, pretty much that.  I don't think they look at it as a "grandiose unveiling event" because it really isn't.

Man, Mike Portnoy isn't in DT anymore.  :omg:

Weird year.

juice

At this rate we won't know who the drummer is until the next album!

TL

They're actually going to put a curtain around the drummer during live performances on the upcoming tour, and won't actually reveal who it is until they go into the studio for DT XII.

The Letter M

The REAL reason they/JP entered the studio today:

It's a race between DT and MP to see who's 5-man band can get their album done and out first!

/sarcasm, /cynacism, / :neverusethis:

It is a bit of coincidence that both MP and DT would announce going "into the studio" on the same day, but it could just be that - a coincidence.

-Marc.

ronnibran

In the studio they are preparing to write "Raise the Knife: Part II," because in the world of progressive music it's cool to have songs with sequels.

Well, it's the first day back after the Christmas period, so it's not all that unlikely/surprising.

I don't know about that, but if they did The Killing Hand: Part II... that would be it. In general I mean, for life, the Universe. It would just be too awesome. In fact I think it's probably better if they don't do that, as I really love my family and have a great life, and I'm not ready to suffer from awesomic cosmos implosion yet.

You realize there is an actual reason to do a Raise the Knife sequel besides him simply liking it, right?

Raise the Knife is about two topics, one of those topics was Kevin Moore leaving the band.

Alright, I get what you mean, but I'd really rather they not dedicate an entire album to Mike, I'd personally rather like some cool fiction (or science fiction?). I don't think this kind of drama really has that much place in the music, except maybe one song.

King Postwhore

For me lyrics are much better from a personal experiances.  Most. I listen to the lyrics of vapor trails by Rush and can't help but think how great they are.  Sometimes the best way to heal is to write about it.

It's just that I have personal experiences every day already, I'd much rather hear some more imaginative made up stories. And some of the experiences they talk about I'd probably not like to relive if they've happened to me. It's why I kind of like SC more than Black Clouds, I kind of like the awesome dark master stuff.

It may be just me, but it's also why I'm also put off by Pain of Salvation, I hate how every single song is about sex, and it's all in this serious "holy shit, this is serious" tone. I could sit there and listen to Ayreon all day because it's a break from real life.

I don't think DT would do what Nightwish did with Bye Bye Beautiful, as much as I like the song.

I don't think they would either. Nightwish's situation was different because it was more like the band fired Tarja, whereas DT's situation happened a little more over time. I really don't think MP and the rest of the guys have as much tension between them as the media seems to be reporting.

I think they should do what Nightwish did with Master Passion Green and write a nasty song about A7x.

Cool Chris

Has JP/JR/CJS ever wrong angsty lyrics? What they should do is write a song about how happy they are to be moving forward with their new era, like CJS talked about in that interview that caused so much trouble. The Blabbermouth headline would be awesome. Dream Theater's New Single "No, We Aren't Sad Mike Left" not popular with ex-bandmate.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

I hope there are no more stories in that sense. They did a good job with SFAM, but that's different.

All of his lyrics back then were great, fictional or non. But I haven't seen any evidence that he can write good ones anymore, be they fictional or non.
