All JP said was that it was the first day in the studio. It's ambiguous. So many things could be happening, but we won't know until more information is given.

Concerning the Fractal Audio thing.... I think Petrucci is using an Axe-Fx for his effects, but he's not using the amp simulations (thank goodness).  He still uses a real amp and, in my opinion, always will.

Aniland

I'd expect the new album to come out in August, realistically. June would be better, of course. :)

It doesn't say anywhere that all albums have to follow the exact same production cycle, especially now that they have a different producer and MIke is gone.

I use the Axe-Fx amp emulation exclusively, and people have numerously commented on my guitar sound. It's how you configure it.

BTW, I almost expect a JR video to be the announcement.

I have a feeling that JP + JMX + WHO EVER THE F*CK THE NEW F*CKING DRUMMER IS are going to jam a lot in the studio before official "writing/recording sessions" begin.

Ok guys, just because they're in the studio now doesn't mean they're even close to recording.

I have no idea how many of you have spent time in a studio, but for ANY band, the first few weeks are simply spent gathering enough donuts and cookies.

I don't mind not getting the announcement. What I do mind is knowing when the album release date is...hopefully in July as it would be cool to get that album along with my child.

This is awesome news.

Indeed. More will be revealed. People act like the lack of information surrounding this great news is horrible. No way, this is a step towards some good stuff.

For us as fans, the obvious big issue is finding out who the drummer is.  For the band, that's probably a rung or two down on the priority ladder given all the other stuff they've got going on.
I was assuming they would already know who the new drummer is.  But if not, that could be a hangup in this process as well.

Well said.

Just because he's in the studio now doesn't mean any of the other members are. Just chill, and wait.

I agree.  Some purists will just automatically turn up their noses and say it always sounds artificial, but I've heard setups that actually sound pretty good.  To my untrained ear, they sound just fine.

:lol  Obviously, it depends on the band.  Granted it was only for a demo, and we had to get in and out quickly for budget reasons, but when I recorded, we got in, recorded our full demo (drums, two guitars, bass, lead vox, and backup vox) in a day.

They're actually recording in China. Jordan is already there.

The new album will be a commentary on economic markets and will feature John Petrucci wrestling a bull.

People equate the price tag with quality, that's what's happening mostly. Digital devices started to replace the low-end market, and since a lot of people don't even really know what to look for in the sound (that's why they look at the price tag), they continue to equate digital with low-end.

You clearly have never visited JP's forum, infact most of us over there are GASing for an AxeFX, that is those who dont already have them. Also alot of the members over there were pleased that JP was using an AxeFX in his B rig. Putting the amp modelling aside, which he only uses for his practice rig anyways, the quality of the effects that piece of kit can produce is astounding.

Quote from: bösk1 on January 03, 2011, 08:28:21 AMAt this point, I also don't think they're all that concerned about a leak.  For one thing, it's not as likely as a lot of people think.  I mean, sure, there's a possibility someone will camp outside a studio and see something.

I think they should be worried about a leak and if they're not then there is something seriously wrong. It would look extremely amateurish of them if the news leaked out before an official announcement.

I can't believe you think it so unlikely either. It's not just people who may camp outside a studio (pretty unlikely) - it's the people who work there, people who work near there, people who may just be outside. I'm sure any studio capable of hosting a band like DT will have a certain number of followers; they may be Madonna fans or Eminem fans or anyone else for that matter, but recording studios do attract a certain type of person.

It only takes one such person to have an interest in the heavier or more prog side of rock to spot something and the secret is out.

I for one will be very disappointed if the news is leaked before an official announcement - it would show the band in a very bad light

7StringedBeast

You really think the band is choosing to hold off on the announcement?  I'm sure if they could have, they would have told us a long time ago.  I bet they are dying to tell us.  I'm sure its legal mumbo jumbo/ record label stuff holding them back from announcing it at this point.

So a leak would not make the band look bad at all.  Shit, their songs leak before the album comes out and that doesn't make them look bad.

Jamesman42

Uh, recent JLB interview said that the management is holding up the announcement, and that the band is going to tell us instantaneously when they get the go-ahead.

So yeah, as of last night JR was in China (or tweeting pics as if he was still there), and no word from JMX or JLB (not that that's particularly unusual). So JP, who has been periodically tweeting that he's been writing new stuff for the past few months might be the only one there. It's kind of like "YEAH DT in the studio!" ... even though it's only one guy who's been working for months. *crickets chirp*

JR has that concert at the end of the month with JLB, then an appearance at the Apple conference a few days later.

I would be disappointed if only one or two guys wrote stuff, why the big deal about a new drummer if he's just gonna show up and record stuff?

Stoneyman

It may not make them look bad per say, it would just blow the entire "unveiling" as a "BIG NEWS IN THE WORLD OF PROG METAL DT NAMES NEW DRUMMER" event.

Kinda takes the steam off of a cool opportunity if Jimmy the engineer's tech tweets the news before DT officially releases it.

Then again, the only people really sweating this whole announcement are us/we diehards.  Most music fans can truly take it or leave it.

If the members of DT really care about making the announcement in a grandiose unveiling event, then they probably will hide the new guy or tell him to stay home until they get the all clear.  Maybe DT doesnt really care about a press release and wont care when some prog fans tweets a pic of Myung, Jp and Mangini eating at Subway together for lunch.  Who knows!?  Maybe Jordan will release some silly youtube video at a random time and downplay the whole thing, followed by a mention on the website.

At this point, I am just glad to know the guys are excited to be creating again.

JP will deliver I am sure.
