12. Parama..Stortregn - Children Of The Obsidian Light
"What really makes this song is the last four minutes of instrumental bliss"
I pretty much knew this song was winning the round. This last four minutes are fantastic. Really makes tolerating the growls worth it. In fact, the music is great all the way throughout. This is top notch. I will be following up.
11. Senecadawg2..The Smiths..The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
"So the best thing I could say about this song is that it reminds me of when I was young."
So, when I say a roulette song in a vacuum can be quite meaningful, this is an example. This song stirs so many emotions for me. The Smiths were so prevalent on College Radio in the mid 80's. Not that I was a huge fan of college radio, but I loved it's spirit. My brother (a year younger than me) was a huge Smiths and Morrissey fan, and I would hear this from his bedroom all of the time. In fact, I haven't talked to him in a few months, so I texted him to tell him about this, so Thank You Seneca.
10. Stadler..Gov't. Mule - Painted Silver Light
"This song kind of won me over in the end, but damn, it took forever to get there."
Literally the last band I expected in this roulette. But I'm glad I got them. While it takes the song a bit to really kick in, when it does, it is absolutely fantastic. Look, I'm a metal guy, but there are bands that I ruly respect, and Gov't Mule is one of them. I worked with a guy that travelled all over to see them. He hooked me up with some tunes, and I thought they were great. The final two minutes has some smoking guitar playing.
9. Kingshmegland..RPWL - Light Of The World
"This is a really cool song. The competition is tough though."
The very beginning of this reminded me a bit of Gary Moore. David Gilmour. Even John Petrucci. This band has an old soul, for sure. I've never really heard of them.
They're obviously fans of Pink Floyd. But I really like this.It has a good pace and definitely doesn't feel like a ten minute track.
8. Puppies..Persefone - Aathma Pt III: One With Light
"Wolfking sent this."
The growls are pretty harsh, but this song has so much more going for it. Parama reminded me that Persefone did pretty well in my last roulette. I'm more open this time to follow up, which I definitely will do. I really like the clean vocals too. This band is on "the list".
7. Indisipline..Pentakill - Lightbringer
"Oh, that reminds me, I have to go to the bathroom"
Yay, more Jorn! I don't quite know how I feel about this song. I like it, but it doesn't jump out as being really good. The chorus is excellent though..
6. Wolfking..Trivium - Like Light To Flies
"Definitely a solid tune. I should like this band more than I do though."
I actually have The Crusade. I haven't heard it in a while. When I got it, I called them a modern day Testament. Then Testament started enjoying a comeback.
I've stayed away from Trivium because of the grwls, but I think I'm in a better place to check them out further. their music is undeniable.
5. Kattelox..Aquaria - Spirits of Light
"This is kind of uneven. I generally liked the instrumental part. But those vocals.."
Certainly nothing really to complain about or really praise here. It's a solid track.
4. Evermind..Damnation Angels - Bringer Of Light
"I find symphonic elements very distracting and unnecessary. This song was decent enough on its own."
I think this tune is solid, but like I said in my initial impressions, symphonic elements really don't do anything for me. It feels fairly generic, a song I've heard a million times before.
3. Elite..Obsidian Kingdom - Last Of The Light
"This song is pretty chill, bookended by some serious noise."
If I could chop the first and last 30 seconds off this song that would be great. The middle 4 minutes is really nice. King of groovy, Floydish, with some sax. I just can't reconcile what comes before and after.
2. Lethean..Voyager - The Morning Light
"This is definitely a decent tune. Not sure how it's going to stack up though."
This is a real enjoyable tune. Unfortunately, It just doesn't have that WOW factor that is needed to stand out. There's some stiff competition here. That said, There's nothing bad I can say about this track. There's just nothing awesome I could say about it either.
1. Kwyjibo..White Lion - Lights And Thunder
"Gee, I thought Chad wasn't playing."
So musically this was actually pretty good. But White Lion were Bon Jovi wannabes from the start. I actually saw White Lion in 1987. What a bunch of posers. I think the actual musicianship was held back by their style. To me, White Lion was a just miss band. I very much like the extended instrumental break, but vocally, this is just brutal.
