12. Wolfking...Wintersun-Awaken From The Dark Slumber
"A bit long, but it ends pretty strong."
This song is fantastic, and will get me to check this band out. An epic tune in every way. I actually thought the clean vocals were fantastic. It never felt like a fourteen minute song. I could really get lost in this. Song of the round for sure.
11. Evermind...Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall - Out Of The Dark
"This song is..um..solid."
A solid track that doesn't have anything to really talk about. It's pretty straightforward and very enjoyable. I really like the vocalist.
10. Lethean...Serenity - From Where Dark Is Born
"This is..um..solid"
I liked this song. I may have to revisit this band. I have fallen Santuary, and remember really liking it when it came out. I never really followed up with them. I may have to change that.
9. Parama...Khonsu - Darker Days Coming
"Gee, too much to this one."
There's a lot going on in this song. I really like pretty much all of it except the chorus (I guess you would call it..) where the guy in the harsh voice comes in with the song's title. It's like Sinister Dropkick Murphys. Productionwise, I love the drum sound, especially the ride cymbal.
8. Stadler...Nektar - Crying In The Dark
"Now that is Old School."
I love old music like this. Nektar is famous for their connection to Iron Maiden, both in the King Of Twilight cover as well as the Hallowed Be Thy Name lawsuit. The instrumental part in this is fantastic.
7. Puppies...Woe Of Tyrants - Kingdom of Might (Dawn In The Darkness)
"The reason I tolerate growls is because of music like this."
I loved the music on this. My biggest complaint is that it's a bit dense. I feel like the singer needs to STFU for a bit and let this amazing music breathe. It's not so much the growls as it is the percentage of growls to music.
6. Indiscipline...Mountain - Traveling In The Dark
"Some great classic guitar rock."
Really awesome tune. Old School. I only know Mississippi Queen from Mountain. I wasn't really sure what to expect here, but this was fantastic. Real cool guitar work. Slightly repetitive vocals, but who cares.
5. Kattelox...Wintersun - Beyond The Dark Sun
"Short and sweet"
There is some mad riffing on this. This one gets right to the point. The only problem with it is that there's no depth to it and it never breathes. Once it ends, my ears are just tired, and there's really no lasting feeling.
4. Elite...Obsidian Kingdom - Darkness
"This was pretty moody. It's going to need some more listens"
With a name like Obsidian Kingdom, I couldn't wait to hear this. It's a cool enough song, but nothing in it really jumped out and grabbed me. It seems to linger a bit too long in the middle with no real climax.
3. Kingshmegland...Thrice - The Dark
"I'm not crazy about this, but I'm still not convinced this band is not for me."
Another Thrice song...seems someone is a glutton for punishment. This band just doesn't stand out in a roulette style format. I would have no problem investigating them further, but I get the feeling that they are a more album based band. It just not a style I gravitate to. But I think this band has a lot to offer.
2. Sececadawg2...Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark
"Gee, not much to this one."
This is definitely a pleasant little song. It's pretty simple and there's not much to say about it. I feel like if I could connect to it, it would be far more meaningful. Unfortunately I'm not sure 5 or 6 listens enables that to happen.
1. Kwyjibo...Killswitch Engage - When Darkness Falls
"Not my style of metal. At all."
Those vocals in the verses kill me. I like the chorus a lot though. I wish the rest of the song retained some of that melody. But those verses are literally unlistenable.
