Round 6 Results Big Hath: Magic Pie - Slightly Mad
I think Elite had sent me something by these guys in a previous roulette which I really enjoyed, unfortunately it was not the case with this song. It’s too all over the place prog and though it reminds me of ELP, which I love, I get the feeling that they’re trying too hard to throw prog in there. There are some good melodies and musical section but overall it ends up boring me
Score: 4
Tomislav95 Klone - Nebulous
I like the slow pace the song starts with and the como of guitar melody with the guy’s voice, they mix together pretty well however when the heavier guitar comes in it brings the song a bit down for me because that’s when I stop enjoying the slow pace of the song. Other than that I find this song quite enjoyable.
Score: 5
Train of Naught: An Endless Sporadic - Through the Fog
This song has a nice and slow buildup, even though I didn’t enjoy it that much it serves pretty well to the piano that comes right after and creates a nice set up to the rest of the song. Talking about that rest of the song it has quite a few things that I like, some nice melodies and good interactions between the instruments but it also has what I like to call “Needles prog”. There are some things in there that seem to be there just to show musicianship and break the flow of the song but for the good of the song it’s just a few things. Overall this song is really good. I really like that it ends so unexpectedly but still leaving the feeling that it was supposed to end.
Score: 7
King: This Day & Age - More of a climb, less of a walk
This is hands down one of the best songs I’ve gotten so far. Every single listen was pure enjoyment and left me wanting more of these guys. The song is crafted very nicely, the management of the tempos and when to slow down or pick up the pace is excellent, the instrumentation all over the song is super nice and I quite like the singer’s voice. Special mention for the drummer, everything he does in the song is fantastic.
Score: 9
twosuitsluke: The Skints - Can’t take no more
Well, pure reggae has never been my thing, except for Bob Marley but it’s music that unless it sucks pretty bad I don’t have a problem with. This one in particular is quite enjoyable, not sure I would sit down and listen to it but I don’t mind it at all.
Score: 5
Fluffy Lothario: Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
I’ve seen this guy’s name around but never got down to see what he was about. This is one of those things that I’m not sure if I’d sit down and listen for myself but I do find pretty interesting, the song overall is really nice. I like the the vibe it carries which makes me calm down and I also really like the flute, it seems a bit out place but at the same time it works perfectly, it’s kind of weird. The guitar is simple but carries the song perfectly, the guy’s voice is OK but fits the song to perfection and the assorted arrangements here and there help the song to never get stale. Again, very nice song.
Score: 7
TAC: Flotsam & Jetsam - L.O.T.D
This metal is very 90s but it’s more or less what I like when it comes to kickass metal. Powerful guitars, powerful drums, powerful vocals but not overdoing anything. It also has some nice riffs and short and concise solos, also not overdoing it in that area. The break in the middle is a bit weird but they manage to pick it up very well after that. Solid song
Score: 6
Sacul: Janelle Monae - Cold War
This song is very Sacul
. That means it’s a hit or miss song, in this case it’s a hit. The singer’s voice is absolutely beautiful and I feel all the song is crafted around that so everything is in there to strengthen that aspect. I like how the electronic drums are used, sometimes those lack some feeling but here they serve their purpose. I also like that pseudo guitar solo almost at the end, it’s kinda weird but goes well with the song.
Score: 7
Elite: Talking Heads - The Great Curve
This song is kinda weird, but good weird. It has a funky vibe with a kinda latin percussion that had me dancing in my sofa. The singer’s voice is a bit hard to get into and I don’t think I managed to like it but it surely doesn’t bother me now as it did the first time. What I would stand out about the song is the backing vocals, whenever they come in they make the song much more interesting and of course that Crimsonian guitar, I recognized Adrian Belew immediately (I googled just to be sure
).
Score: 8
Scar: Modest Mouse - Float On
Another funky song that had me almost dancing while listening to it. I really love the melodies in this song, they’re almost psychedelic yet they manage to not go over the top and keep the song “danceable”. I really enjoyed listening to this song, it puts me in a good mood.
