Outside the context of the album, Strange Deja Vu just doesn't work for me as a song.

I can't say I've ever really listened to any of SFAM outside of the context of the album (unless you count live albums). For me it's an all or nothing experience, and the "all" experience is still a fantastic one. I agree that a lot of the album doesn't work outside of the context of the album, but it's also not usually supposed to, which is why they often have to play chunks of the album live.

SFAM songs isolated work more than individual songs/segments/movements/tracks from Six Degrees Disc 2.

That's not a surprise given that SFAM is a concept album, and SDOIT disc 2 is a song.

Made up of 8 smaller songs.

You could argue that SFAM is made up of 9 songs.

SDOIT is a song consisting of 8 movements.

Though I know that SDOIT is technically one song, I have trouble thinking of it as such. The transitions are well done, but each section is so different from one another that I cannot imagine it as a single song. I see it more as a suite in the vein of AMBI.
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

That's true, but technically 6DOIT is one song, which is why I never rate it too high, cause as a single song, it's a bit of a train wreck in regards to it being a well-flowing piece of music and structurally, but when looking at it as a suite of songs, it comes off better.  Again, technically it is one song, but looking at it that way makes me rate it lower than I would the individual movements.  For example, 6DOIT the song would be lucky to make my top 40, but several of the movements, when taken as single songs, would definitely be a lot higher than that, if I were to rank them individually, or as like five songs since, for example, it's easy to view About to Crash (reprise) and Losing Time/Grand Finale as a single piece of music instead of two just because they are separate tracks.

Oh no Blob, you said concept.  :omg:  I only say that because I know that the definition of concept is somewhat subjective, but then again it really isn't.  But, I'm curious.  Based on your statement, could SDOIT be considered a concept song?  Or is there such a thing?  Personally, I consider SDOIT the song to be similar in structure to SFAM.  Am I way off base on this?  What do you think?

I think what they did with "Six Degrees" is very similar (but not EXACTLY the same) as what Rush did with "2112" and "Hemispheres"
or what Yes did with "The Gates of Delirium" taking up one side of an album with a song or a concept.

Unofficially to me:  SFAM is one song in two acts with nine scenes.

I don't know if it was the overexposure of seeing SFAM live 5 times, but in those days this album was just overkill for me and I never quite appreciated them the same.  Plus, I was turned off by the sound production on its release day.  I've since gotten over that and enjoy the tonal quality now.
