Well because of that part I feel like it suits rainy weather well, although Porcupine Tree is quickly becoming rainy weather music too!

When it's dreary and getting to the fall of the year, I have a hard place in my heart for Opeth.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Ugh, I've tried listening to Opeth. My best friend showed me them. He's the one who got me into DT and PT so I trust his taste in music, but I really couldn't listen to Opeth at all. :(

Ah yes, P-Tree is very good for depressing settings. You should try posting over in GMD, you will discover many great bands. :tup

Opeth is very good, also.

Don't like the harsh vox? You could try Watershed, it's the album that got me into them.

That is precisely why I can't listen to them, so I'll take your suggestion.

It's worth noting, Watershed still has harsh vox, but apart from Heir Apparent, the clean vocals dominate. Damnation is entirely clean, but I personally don't care for the songs as much.

I like Damnation a lot, but Watershed is fantastic.  Hex Omega FTW.   :metal

My favorite album of theirs remains Blackwater Park.  But I wouldn't recommend it for Whatsername.

Am I the only one who feels required to listen to Trial of Tears on a gloomy, rainy day?

Especially since it is raining here in New York City.  ;)

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is probably going to start getting plays over here in Broflat soon. It's very autumn saturday afternoon music, especially November.

I used to despise growing before I got into Opeth, but I loved the music and his clean vocals so much that I kept listening to them. Opeth introduced me to so much awesome new music, so even though I don't really listen to them a lot anymore (however I'm spinning Morningrise at the moment :metal), I have a huge lot of respect for them. They helped me discover my two favourite subgenres of metal at the moment (prog metal and melodic death metal), and opened my eyes to much more amazing music (I was mainly listening to thrash before), which is one of the reasons why they are still one of my top 5 bands (the other reason is that I think that Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Watershed are some of the greatest prog metal albums of all time).
Even if they won't have such a big influence on you as they had on me, their wonderful music is really worth trying out, and Watershed is a great starting point imo :tup

I get what you are saying regarding the clean vocals. It's like a completely different band when hearing them with clean vocals and the harsher vocals. The cleans vocals keep me listening...from time to time. Now for a "cleaner" version of Opeth, I just listen to Anathema or the Polish prog band Votum.  ;D

Yeah, it was from a local record store! They even had DT12 but I didn't have the money nor the means to play the vinyl version, and the 5.1 mix does nothing for me so I'm holding off to find the standard edition. It was a struggle, though. In the end, the $6 sold me on waiting, because I can get 2 beers for $6, and still get my beautiful music on Tuesday. :lol

What a coincidence, it was the first album I bought myself! Four years and a half later I ended up mildly disliking the second half of it  :lol

And by the way, I payed it the equivalent of 30$, if I remember correctly. Double CDs are that expensive in my place.

He once imbued a stock of 1000 Awake jewel cases in sea-wasp venom and scattered them across the world to exterminate the lovers of that album, he can definitely be meaner than that. :lol
