Universal is a great song. I much prefer Notes From Africa as the closer to Synchestra though. I can't imagine how out of place it would have been on Terria. Granted, I'm sure it was rather different back then (the Love? reprise probably wasn't there either, and that part rules).

honestly, i'm sure it was. the part used in "Love?" was probably lifted from the Terria version and then he decided "Notes" fit in on Synchestra afterward — though Devin operates on a weird non-linear timeline musically anyway, so you could also be totally correct. i don't think he's ever said anything about the relationship beyond the brief description of songs from his forum before Synchestra came out (which seems to support your interpretation, maybe?):

Notes From Africa - Summarizes the whole damn thing. References and opposes 'Love?' from Alien, and really hammers the point of the record home, a real solid groove and a VERY STRANGE MELODY that has been in my head since Infinity. Salman Rushdie. It fades out into echoes that put you in a 5 minute jungle scape after the song is over. (we went to an indoor rainforest and taped the sounds of the waterfalls and birds) By this point of the record, I just wanted people to be in a tropical paradise for a few minutes. It's warm and beautiful. Technically, the record is over...

I always thought of Sunshine and Happiness as a bonus track. I'm pretty sure copies exist that don't even have it at all.

Actually, to bring Terria back into the mix, would you consider Stagnant to be the closer of Terria, or Humble?
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

he's had a weird history of bonus tracks after the proper endings — "Satan's Ice Cream Truck" is a ridiculous addendum to HAARHT, "Things Beyond Things" is a remastered demo 'afterthought' on OM, "Noisy Pink Bubbles" is offset by a whack of silence on Infinity (though acoustic bonuses were added later too), Physicist has "Forgotten" (a.k.a. "Bad Devil!"), "Humble" is a bizarre ambient experiment on Terria, "Info Dump" is a noisescape after Alien's last statement, and "Sunshine and Happiness" is an obvious add-on for Synchestra.

Yeah, I love that song. Very Beatles-esque.

This is also true of 3 of the DTP albums. Awake and As You Were fade into ambience. Ki has Demon League which feels like an afterthought. Interesting way to end albums. Like a cool down after a workout.

I really didn't even notice this part of the song until I played it during a car ride one day, and my friend asked, "are we listening to birds? This is awesome"

The only problem on that album is the noise at the end of The Fluke.

I absolutely love the ambient part of The Fluke. Its an amazing transition to Nobody's Here
I love beautiful things.

These samples are sounding really amazing.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

"Save Our Now" sounds like one of the most poppy things Devin ever done. even more than Addicted stuff.
I love beautiful things.

Still not sure which one I'm going for. I'll probably end up doing the Amazon one like I did with By a Thread and Contain Us. Free 2-day shipping FTW.

I think this sums up my thoughts rather well: If you thought Addicted was one of the happiest albums of all time, this is like Addicted receiving a blowjob while high on every substance in the universe.

Seriously, the joy in True North and Liberation is amazingly contagious. I don't think I'll ever have a bad day ever again.

I liked it, but Devin's voiceover was too distracting for me to really get into it.
