FUCK that is a nice guitar.I've just been inspired to take up lessons again with my friend this summer.
Obligatory post: Devin is my favorite musician/person in the world and every single bit of music he makes is a work of pure genius.
WHOO EPICLOUD
Those legs are really.... Canadian. :neverusethis:
Really? No one has done it yet? Am I going to have to do this? Fiiiiine.
SMASHER!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah there's a thread for this.Infinity is awesome indeed. Dynamics and Unity are pure :hefdaddy
Totally excited for the new album.
Still have a few albums to give more listens to.
Recently I've been spinning Infinity more and it's incredible.
THIS IS JUST A TESTicle!
Addicted, Terria, ZiltoidThis. Any order.
So far, after 5 tracks, Addicted has a different feel to it than Ki. Addicted, as a whole, feels a bit more aggressive. Ki certainly had its moments of pure aggression, but it also had some incredible free-floating moments of serene blissfulness. I think I prefer the Ki feel a bit more, however that's not to say I don't enjoy Addicted. It's just... Ki felt a bit more diverse, with a wider range of emotional responses triggered. Obviously, I haven't heard enough to give fair judgment, and I'm sure Addicted will grow on me (as did Ki). The female vocalist also adds another interesting dynamic, haven't decided how I feel about it though.
Is the general consensus that Addicted is the superior album?
Scenedawg is NOT disappointing!! He's exceeded my expectations ERRY TIME GOD DAMN IT, YOU RUDE!
:millahhhh
If you just go in free and take in the genius, you'll blow the first bald Canadian you see.

If you expect anything specific, you'll be disappointing.
No Synchestra love?
Get Synchestra.
Ki is brilliant, although it is all I have from Devy... maybe you guys can direct me to a good next step.Listen to Deconstruction,Ghost, Terria and Ocean Machine
Is the general consensus that Addicted is the superior album? From what i know, most people would say that Terria or Ocean Machine are his best albums.

None of his other albums sound like Ki. None of his other albums sound like Addicted. None of his other albums sound like Deconstruction and none of his other albums sound like Ghost.
He generally though is a metal guy. The most important thing is to go into it open minded. If you expect anything specific, you'll be disappointed. If you just go in free and take in the genius, you'll blow the first bald Canadian you see.

Sorry that's my bad, I tend to hog all the Synchestra love.
:heart :heart :heart :heart :heart
No way, I'm gonna fight this battle to the bitter end if I have to. You should just give up now.
KNEEEEL FOR ME NOOW ADAAAAAAAAAMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Aaaah you just reminded me how I don't have Ziltoid :( :(
:'(
Eewwww no I hate haggis.
YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL!
*sobs*
Well that's clearly the wrong picture, Sean Connery does not have nine testicles.
When does that come out again?
I want to set an age limit for this thing, but I forgot how old Cole is.
Attempting to learn the whole Deconstruction album on guitar.Let me know how the title track goes. :p
So far I've completed Praise the Lowered, Stand, most of Juular, and Poltergeist.
Onto Sumeria...
Ghost was my second-favorite album last year. Decon, not so much. Its good but there have been so many 2011 releases (either I was listening to them or I'm discovering them now) that are better, IMO.Decon is unbeliveably sick.
Attempting to learn the whole Deconstruction album on guitar.

*Puts on Justin flame shield* Terria, Addicted, Ziltoid, and maybe even Ki are all better, with the first three that I mentioned actually being much better.
Terria, Addicted, Ziltoid, and maybe even Ki are all better,
and maybe even Ki are all better
maybe even Ki
maybe
Well, Planet of the Apes is the second best song on the album, so that's probably why.
Well, Planet of the Apes is the second best song on the album, so that's probably why.
I noticed you misspelled best there. I fixed it for you. :)
Its got some amazing parts (Praise the Lowered, Stand, Juular, Masturbator, Deconstruction, Poltergeist), but I don't like Pandemic at all, and the first half of Planet of the Apes has really awkward vocal melodies and it really takes me out of the song. Sumeria is just eh overall (despite Duplantier's awesomeness).Decon is flawless.
*Puts on Justin flame shield* Terria, Addicted, Ziltoid, and maybe even Ki are all better, with the first three that I mentioned actually being much better.I can see how terria is maybe better... but there is no way Addicted or Ziltoid even touch Deconstruction. Decon is just way superior.
Aaaah you just reminded me how I don't have Ziltoid :( :(
And you call yourself a man.
Deconstruction is great, but I am not fond of Pandemic or Poltergeist, but that shouldn't surprise anyone who knows me since I am not a big fan of crazy fast metal like those songs are. I suspect the Devin fans who love SYL love those songs. I can see the appeal for those kinds of metal fans, but they just don't do anything for me.Addicted is superb, but it doesnt even touch the quality of Decon.
Addicted is better. :tup :tup
JEWDROPPING
LOL! it was a typo :PJEWDROPPING
I didn't know this was possible. Well, unless Devin Townsend's awesomeness gives him super powers to control and randomly kill Jews. :lol
Devin Townsend...Hitler?

Decon is harder to swallow though, thats for sure.
Aaaah you just reminded me how I don't have Ziltoid :( :(
And you call yourself a man.
So Ian put Ziltoid in the dropbox for me. That album is better than I had ever hoped or imagined.
I'm proud to be able to call myself a man now.
Well, each one has its own opinions.Deconstruction is great, but I am not fond of Pandemic or Poltergeist, but that shouldn't surprise anyone who knows me since I am not a big fan of crazy fast metal like those songs are. Except that it not only touches it, it surpasses it. :)
I just like the "big" feeling that comes with a lot of Devin's music and I think the "big" feeling is missing on a lot of Decon. There are moments where it is pure ecstasy but then there are parts where there's just too much shit going on so it loses its "big" feel. That is why I'm looking forward to Epicloud so much.dude what
If Decon doesnt give you the "Fucking Huge" feeling, i dont know what else can give you that.
Yeah man. I mean, listen to Juno or Numbered or Stagnant and tell me they aren't BIG. Like, in a grandiose way that all of Decon isn't.I still don't follow. With the obvious exceptions (slow parts of PTL, Stand, and the transition from Sumeria to Masturbator), the entire album has the same level of grandiose that I get from any of the above listed songs.
It is official, today is Devy day. Just listened to Decon and now I'm on Ki. I'm going to listen to Terria and Addicted before the day is out.
I'm kinda annoyed Epicloud which seems like it's gonna be a perfect "summer" album will be coming out after summer... then again I live in Florida. This guy has the right idea.
Also. Deconstruction is a perfect 10/10 flawless masterpiece any differing views will lead me to immediately dismiss all of ones musical opinions.
Well, Planet of the Apes is the second best song on the album, so that's probably why.
I noticed you misspelled best there. I fixed it for you. :)
Instead of make the sentence incomprehensible, could you show me tabs for the Deconstruction album please? :)
I think Pandemic just isn't interesting to me, especially after the craziness of Masturbator, more of a breather would have been nice

I still think Decon is superior.
Maybe you havent listened enough time to fully swallow it?
He has mentioned losing money in the US though, so maybe Europe gives him more income (not unheard of).
If you haven't heard Cooked on Phonics, get it now.look at my sig.
Ah, gotcha. I was wondering since you didn't rate it.because its more of a joke album...
yes this do this pleaseAttempting to learn the whole Deconstruction album on guitar.

Onto Sumeria...
Want tabs. Now.
It is also just generally perfect.
Let it be known, that while Addicted is great Friday music, it is also great "survived 3 exams in three hours" celebration music.
Addicted is more catchy and instantly likable than the majority of his other work, so you should have no problem liking it almost immediately, if you are destined to become a Devin fan that is. ;)Indeed.
Also, protip: The album title has no exclamation point. The songs do.
Just 1 question.(https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/forumavatars/avatar_4663.jpg)
WHO'S BEHIND THE DOOR?!
You know, I still wish he did Juno as an encore for the Addicted show, that would have been nothing short of incredible.I cannot wait to see the Punky Bruster songs.
Anywho, can't wait for the release of this, been wanting to have some live recordings of DTP songs, and now we get that + actual video recordings of ALL OF THEM.
YES.
ALSO, LIVE PUNKY BRUSTER.
So I went to those pre-order places, are they PAL versions? NTSC? Region 1? 2?
Obviously I want NTSC region 1. Where do I go to order that?

Pre-order just came up for the US version of the "By A Thread" Boxset on Amazon. Obviously it is still quite early, so there will be price fluctuations but still a great price.

Why does it say it's just an Audio CD?
...has the worst mixing of any song I've ever heard that pretty much ruins an otherwise amazing song. You should probably start running. I think I can already hear Ultimetalhead running wildly towards this thread, chainsaw in hand.
...has the worst mixing of any song I've ever heard that pretty much ruins an otherwise amazing song. The fuck? I'm actually legitimately curious as to what your issue is with it.
Any news on when there will be a pre-order for Europe?I'm guessing there will be one on Devin's official store (UK) and on his record label, InsideOut Music's Shop (Germany). Both versions of the Contain Us boxsets were sold on those websites.
Definitely getting the version with the 7".
do you know that Epicloud is not the only album he is working on?Oh yes, we know about those indeed :P
he also works on an album called "Casualities of Cool" atm. he says it will be minimalistic and in the Ki vibe.
he is also planning releasing Ghost 2 and Ziltoid 2 at the future.

which excites my musical penis to the point of popping. No, I'm pretty sure that's just genital warts. You should see a doctor mang.
:lol Christ guys, go easy on him; he was simply trying to inform. Y'know, despite the fact that they've been the topic of discussion on and off for about a ka-bil-trillion pages. It's okay, Yaga-Baba-chan, I'm a noob and did not know that Casualties of Cool will have a Ki vibe, which excites my musical penis to the point of popping. So you're information has been received by one lesser being and has elated me to a mediocre one!
You're a mean, mean member...

It was tagged onto the 2006 re-release of HAARHT. As to when it was actually recorded, I'm not entirely sure. The way he absolutely nails the final scream tells me it has to have been towards the beginning of his career when he was belting out high notes on Vai's album.
My guess, probably 1996.
Except that Sinatra cover, which was god awful :lolWrong.
Yeah the Sinatra cover wasn't too great :lolAnd wrong.
It's awesome in the way that it's so cheesy it works.
Has anyone else heard this gem? Seems like whenever Devin covers a song, it always ends up putting the original band to shame.

ocean machine = best devy album

Can I please disagree? :)
And the Sinatra cover is indeed fucking awesome.

Yeah, I disagree as well. I'd say Ki.
Devin's voice can handle pretty much anything. I think he's hit an F7 before (though it was very screechy). I'm more curious about who played the solo.Has anyone else heard this gem? Seems like whenever Devin covers a song, it always ends up putting the original band to shame.

Listening now, I'm already nervous for that last note, what is it, an A5 right? I so hope he hits it.
The Fall to your Knees is a lot cooler than the original.
Yeah he hits the right note in the end. Though the funny thing is, it sounds too effortlessly to me, too much falsetto (not that I wanna get into that discussion right now). I would've loved it if he screamed it out like the notes before.
Overall though, it's a great cover, really cool. It sounds 'old' too, instead of that they've tried to modernize it.

Dev's music doesn't suit high-ass singing unless it's screamed — i'm not super convinced he ends up doing that when he gets really high because he's unable to do it as a normal note, but rather that he chooses not to, much like he can wank the shit out of his guitar but very, very rarely does so in his music. it's something i like about his style (in both respects).
I'm getting nervous. His facebook updates are saying that this boxset is selling quick and I won't be home or have any money until Monday. He is just talking about the signed version that was available at his Official O Merch store. That is actually sold out now.
:dangerwillrobinson:
Just so you know guys, you can download a free sampler from InsideOut that includes Addicted (Live) which is taken from the "By A Thread" boxset. Sounds amazing to me! :metal :metal :metal :metal

It always placed last on Terria for me, but the last time I listened to the album, I enjoyed it a lot more for some reason. I always enjoyed the "C chord, to F chord, U2 chord, Resolve" part, and especially how he changes it to "Seaport, to airport." I usually zoned out during the rest of it. It didn't have one of those instantly epic parts that every other song on Terria has.
Now, I'd say it's about middle of the road for me.
Sure, but they aren't INSTANTLY epic. It took time for them to reveal their epicness to me.It always placed last on Terria for me, but the last time I listened to the album, I enjoyed it a lot more for some reason. The ending isn't epic, especially the way it leads into Stagnant? Devin's guitar solo isn't epic?

I haven't paid too much attention to the encore-songs, but are they songs from his earlier catalogue (aka. non Project-songs), or B-Sides that didn't make it to let's say Ki, Addicted, Ghost and Deconstruction? Or "rarities" from his older catalogue?
Again, I only browsed through the list once, so don't have much of an idea.
Also, Ultimatehead, the fact that Tiny Tears is as long as it is is a big reason why it is so awesome. The whole song is a slow burn, and it wouldn't have worked had any part of the song been shorter. To me, Devin has several handfuls of absolutely perfect songs, and that is one of them. :)agreed! i love every second of "Tiny Tears," i just wish it didn't fade out (it's a copout ending!).
Really, Devin doesn't do all that many traditional fadeouts. Tiny Tears is really the only one I can think of off the top of my head. The Greys ends with a fadeout, but that's very compulsory and totally okay.
Everything on Terria is completely flawless anyways, so...
I want to have sex with Devy.
I want to have sex with Anneke. She was looking so fine that night, it's so great to have it immortalised on DVD!

Hm, so, yeah. That thing about Deconstruction being untouchable and nothing ever coming close to dethroning it as the best thing ever...
Well...

Genious.Genious.
Genious.Genious.
Eh, Che wasn't a big enough part of Ki to warrant having her on the DVD, brilliant though she was. Dirk was probably the obvious choice for the drums, since it would probably tough to get Duris Maxwell to come out for it.
Besides, so much of Devin's live shows are pre-recorded that it's really hard for me to care. Everything sounds awesome.
Having all of the Decon guest vocalists would have also added to the sheer over-the-top-ness which is displayed throughout the album.Eh, Che wasn't a big enough part of Ki to warrant having her on the DVD, brilliant though she was. I know, I'm just being nitpicky. I already ordered the DVD and got pissed off a few days ago when I had to remind myself that they're not out till June.
But lead vocal parts being all playback is just a bit of a let down to me. I'm glad Anneke and the chick from Ghost are going to be doing those two albums, but Ki and Decon would have been way better for me had all of the guest vocalists come in for the show. I've seen other bands have lots of guest stars for special shows. I just wish all of them could have canceled whatever they were doing to help Devy out. Cause let's face it, whatever they're doing is less important.
NEED.
Ultimetalhead, you forgot junoJuno was an Addicted B-side, bro.
Also wtf Justin, Traestorz is awesome!
Devin Townsend Project/Katatonia/Paradise US tour to be announced tomorrow morning/afternoon.
DTP and Katatonia will be co-headlining.
I'm pretty sure someone will post dates before I do, but St. Paul is confirmed.
Might be a silly question, but will Epicloud go under Devin Townsend Project or just Devin Townsend? Because from what I recall he only planned on having the 4 albums, but maybe he changed his mind to add more?
Seeing the DTP on the poster I guess that's an answer. :P
Ah, sounds cool. :)
I still feel bad for missing DTP when they came here last year, I have this thing when I get into a band/an artist the same week, or the week after they play here, and I find out afterwards. Has happen several times. :lol

Yup it's under the DTP moniker. Dev's reasoning for it....He likes the logo too much to ditch it. :lol
Also since the tour poster got posted online. I scored an interview with Ryan Van Poederooyen. Working on getting one with Dev too.
Also saw/heard this Ihsahn track "Introspection" with Devin performing guest vocals. I'm not big into black metal but this seems quite cool with Devin blending his style in. :metal

Way cool! I can't wait to check that out... while you're interviewing remind them they do have fans south of the mason dixon line *banjo's playing in the background*.... although Dev would quickly point out it's all management and folks who book the venues... but I still want to bitch and moan about it. :-\

Looks like I'll be skipping out on this one. :( Chicago's a bit too far, unfortunately.
Hopefully he'll do another tour in October/November that hits Cleveland again.
Just dropping in to say that Strapping Young Lad's self-titled album is awesome and extremely underrated.
One of these days I'll be able to order that boxset for myself.
Some day...
Pay for my plane ticket and I'll let you get a peek at the ol' hills yourself.
Hey baby :eyebrows: (https://puu.sh/b5fA)

Also, I'm going to see Devy play an unplugged set tonight with my lady, can't wait! :D

You know what sucks? Mine comes tomorrow, but to a mail room, which means I won't get it till like 4 or 5. Then I have to be up at 7am the next day, have class all day then drive all day Thursday.
I hope they didn't fuck up too bad. They play to a backing track for fuck's sake. :lol
There's no way anything will live up to the studio version of Deconstruction. My expectations are tempered.
I'm really hoping Ghost gains something cool from the live vibe though.
I'm really hoping Ghost gains something cool from the live vibe though.
By dubs, do you mean backing track?
Oh I wasn't meaning to correct you, just wanted to make sure my understanding was correct.
It is a bit of a shame that he uses so much backing track live, but his music really is just so rich and busy, and it would be far too expensive/impractical for him to get a whole load of additional guest musicians.
It sounds amazing on my sound system. That's pretty much all I care about. :p
I didn't see a surround option on the DVDs. I was watching in stereo with the surround speakers merely playing the same thing as the front ones. Sounded great.
Nah, not really. Everything sounds pretty perfect to me. Maybe they're not very loud on the album either.
By bad mix I mean the general levels. The drums are too quiet, the backing tracks are too loud, that's all. Just because an artist releases something, doesn't mean it's automatically perfect.
Too easy: Addicted, by a wide distance.
Deconstruction blew me away. The videos for the guest.vocalists are funny. Especially Floors.

As mentioned, Anneke recently completed recording her parts for Canadian vocalist / guitarist / producer Devin Townsend’s new album, Epicloud. It’s the second time the pair have worked together, with Devin having conscripted Anneke in 2009 for his Addicted record after seeing a YouTube clip of her performing the Ziltoid The Omniscient track ‘Hyperdrive’ live in concert. It’s one of those artistic relationships that, according to both parties, has it’s own untouchable corner.
“I love Devin Townsend like my brother.” Anneke say without missing a beat. “He means so much to me musically and as a person. In his music he has the perfect symbiotic relationship between heavy and melody and true emotions and feelings. It’s just so pure and so heavy. When I was singing for the Epicloud album I told him I could hear West Side Story in the music. It’s so fairytale-like but so damn heavy. I love it.”
“I almost cried when I sang in his studio,” she says of Epicloud. which is due for release later this year. “There was one song that I did and he listened back to it quickly, and I was really quiet while he did that. It almost made me angry because it was so good but he didn’t say anything (laughs). He realized that and said ‘Oh, um, you know how I am with compliments…’ and I was like, ‘Devin, this has nothing to do with compliments. This song is out of this world!’ It’s just… fucking hell, Epicloud a classic and it’s not even out yet. It made me angry because godammit it was good, and Devin was just ‘Oh, well, um, cool…’ (laughs). I know Devin’s music but I haven’t heard anything like Epicloud in my life. I’m so proud to be involved.”
This isn’t just heat of the moment lip service. During the Epicloud recording sessions back in April, Anneke took time out and posted a brief update on the proceedings via Facebook saying Devin “made me do 20 hours of the loudest and most gorgeous vocals I’ve ever done.” Not a statement to be taken lightly from a critically acclaimed singer.
“Yeah, because I never say that,” she laughs. “I’ve never said that in my life. It’s funny you noticed that because I thought about it when I was writing that post, and it’s Devin making me sing the stuff. I’m doing what he wants me to do, so if he says ‘Stand on your head naked in a corner and sing’ I’ll do it because that’s what he means to me.”
Devin has a reputation of being a taskmaster of veteran drill sergeant proportions in the studio. Soilwork frontman Björn “Speed” Strid went on record with BW&BK in 2002 following the vocal recording sessions for the band’s Natural Born Chaos album, saying that Devin pushed him well beyond his known limits and “almost killed me” in doing so. Anneke understands Björn’s experience, albeit at a less musically volatile level.
“He did it on Addicted and even more on Epicloud. I know my own voice pretty well, but Devin made me do things I didn’t really know I could do. He asked me to sing in various ways and I didn’t really know how, but I tried because he asked me to and, fucking hell, I can do it (laughs). I can reach this high, I can reach this low, be this loud or this soft. Devin gets out every aspect of my voice.”
In an interview with Devin back in June 2011, he discussed his plans for Epicloud and laughingly explained that “hopefully I’m going to write all the heavy and hard singing parts for Anneke.” In actual fact he sings with her on the album as they did on Addicted and for the select tour dates that followed.
“Devin’s voice is just amazing,” says Anneke. “When we were in the Epicloud sessions he asked me about doing a quiet vocal and showed me what he wanted, and I said we should do it together. So, we were at the mic together, and having him singing next to me without the surrounding sound of a live show… he scared the hell out of me. I think I have a strong voice, but he was so loud that I couldn’t hear what I was doing (laughs). Devin said ‘Okay, I’ll stand on the other side of the room…’ and he still scared the hell out of me. He’s my hero.”
As such, Anneke readily admits that working with Devin has definitely influenced her own music.
“He’s influenced me quite directly, actually. For some reason, what Devin is doing in big I’m doing in my own little world. I’m very inspired by people and especially by Devin in being able to mix heaviness with pop elements and beautiful and bright things, and there’s also a dark side to it. I think that’s the way we are as people, and because we have so many sides why not put all that in one song or one album or one show? That was my idea for Everything Is Changing, and I’m very proud of it. But Epicloud, the magnitude of it is out of this world.”
Ima very very very very hyped now.
Epicload must be one of the best albums in Devin's career to exceed my hype.

I caught the last 10-15 minutes of the Decon documentary. It was mostly him insulting himself and yelling at himself to shut up.

I'd love to post on Devy's forum but it's just so disorganized that I can't get into browsing it.

disorganized? i find it too organized! most news just gets dumped into the main Devin Townsend Project forum, so you can direct your forum sweeps there for the news on Epicloud and Z2.
For those who don't frequent Devy's forums, it looks like the release date for Epicloud will be "September 18th for N Am and September 24th for Europe." Posted by someone from Northern Music Co. As most of you know, there will be a regular CD, 2CD Digipak version but also there will be a VINYL version. :tup
Somehow, some of that stuff sounds more dense and layered than Deconstruction...
Is it possible?
Could I...
No. It is not possible.

I think that sample got me pregnant.Sorry best album cover ever goes to everything John Baizley has done.
Also, best album cover ever.
I got a huge boner from that teaser trailer. Holy shit this album is going to be awesome!
Anyone else noticed that this video has 767 likes and only 302 views O.o

That's how YT works with popular videos. It will always stall at 300-something views before it catches up later.
Honestly, that is a legitimate concern of mine.:lol................. :|.............. :yeahright....me too....
Kay guys, here's a question for you.
Who would win in a wrestling match? Devin or God?
I wish people would stop comparing Devin to God... hes good, but hes not Devin.
Well, its a radio rip, so I'd assume it will be.
I didn't make it quite through halfway of the snippet video before I decided I would wait at least for the leak. I wanna hear as much in full as I can at once of this epicness!
I just got my By A Thread boxset, and dammit addicted is still messed up, although I can play the actual video. Question: I am going to rip the disk to an mp4, and since I can rip it should I, or should I wait for the replacement disk?
Also I feel kind of stupid because I have been pronouncing (at least in my mind) epicloud EPI-CLOUD, and thought thats rather a unique name..
Anyway.
Wow, just listened to the sample tracks. They sound INCREDIBLE. So much better than Deconstruction (that was way too hectic and crazy for my taste).
And I feel like an idiot, but I've been calling the album "Epi-Cloud' since I first saw it.
Clearly it's actaully 'Epic-Loud'.

Well I was saying Sin-Ches-Tra, but with an emphasis on the Ches. But apparently it's with the emphasis on the Sin, just like Orchestra.

Sounds like you need a cumulative lesson on the subject.
AE is similar to Addicted? What?
AE is similar to Addicted? What?Accelerated Evolution is easily the most poppy of his albums that aren't called Addicted (although Epicloud is going to blast both of them out of the water, I believe). Plus, it has Deadhead, Suicide, and Away, so it must be heard.
I'd say revisit the ones you already have, or get any or all of the other DTP CDs: Ki, Deconstruction and Ghost.
Well, I listened to Terria and Ocean Machine awhile back and didn't really like either of them. (although Earth Day rules) A few days ago I tried Addicted and absolutely loved it! I've been listening to it frequently since, it is so good. What should I try next? Or should I revisit the other two albums?

I wouldn't describe any of Devin's album as poppy. If you want to say that Addicted and AE are the two albums with the catchiest choruses, okay, I'll give you that, but that still doesn't mean that they are all that similar. For me, the big difference is that Addicted has that classic Devin wall of sound, while AE does not, sounding more streamlined and like it was intended for mainstream rock radio. That has always bothered me about that record. Not that I have a problem with an album being mainstream, but it simply sounded like Devin emasculated his own sound on that record (in the overall sound. not necessarily the heaviness); it's just not him. I still like AE quite a bit, but I've never liked the sound of it. The drums in particular are very different-sounding for him (not sure if it is the mixing or the way they are played), and that bothers me.
Okay fine, they're not poppy in the traditional sense, but there's no denying that Addicted and AE are the easiest for newcomers to digest. They're the least dense albums (not including Ki or Ghost, but I wouldn't recommend those to newbies unless they were already into that sort of music) while still giving a taste of his all-encompassing awesomeness.AE is similar to Addicted? I know jack shit about DT, except for some random SYL tracks (a couple from the first one and the first few from Alien). They're very well-crafted and produced, but not really my forte. (TOO DENSE AND OVERWHELMING)
You people seem to know this guy inside and out; what are his most un-ballsy, tranquil, sparse albums?
I hated the production of AE for a long time. But it turned out I had a really shitty rip where the high mids were all boosted. Got a proper version and it's as thick and heavy as anything Dev has ever done.
I think Devin's ultimate sonic masterpiece is Terria. You can get lost in that album with all the different layers going on. And the drum sound is orgasmic. The recent records sound great but are maybe a bit too sterile.
I've tried so hard to figure out the issue with Terria's drums, and I still can't. Can you elaborate again?I hated the production of AE for a long time. The drums on Terria sound awful.
The drums on Terria aren't that great, even if they did sound better. I know they were going for a simplistic style, but Gene Holgan is NOT that kind of drummer.
Plus, they sound exactly like a drum machine on that album. Why Devin didn't just use one is anyone's guess.

Quite honestly, you might want to look elsewhere than to Devin Townsend. Because dense and overwhelming is pretty much his thing. Ki and Ghost are more or less the only exceptions.

I was mocking people in the P/R thread who use that argument. They don't understand that you can fundamentally love your country while complaining about certain things.
I honestly don't care for the production on Terria at all. His production is overbearing at first, but once you get into it (if you get into it) everything else will seem puny by comparison. It's like the black dick of production.
Like I said, AE is heavy as hell at times, but even the heaviest parts, it usually sounds like just two or three guitars playing something really heavy, as opposed to layers of guitars overdubbed to give it that wall of sound. I am not saying AE has zero moments like that, but they are few and far between. On albums like Addicted and Infinity, they are all over the place.Accelerated Evolution has a jaw-dropping production. it has a HUGE wall of ambient sounds backing the guitars.
What's in the VIP bundle? Meet and greet?
Universal is a great song. I much prefer Notes From Africa as the closer to Synchestra though. I can't imagine how out of place it would have been on Terria. Granted, I'm sure it was rather different back then (the Love? reprise probably wasn't there either, and that part rules).
Notes From Africa - Summarizes the whole damn thing. References and opposes 'Love?' from Alien, and really hammers the point of the record home, a real solid groove and a VERY STRANGE MELODY that has been in my head since Infinity. Salman Rushdie. It fades out into echoes that put you in a 5 minute jungle scape after the song is over. (we went to an indoor rainforest and taped the sounds of the waterfalls and birds) By this point of the record, I just wanted people to be in a tropical paradise for a few minutes. It's warm and beautiful. Technically, the record is over...

A great uplifting way to end an album.
he's had a weird history of bonus tracks after the proper endings — "Satan's Ice Cream Truck" is a ridiculous addendum to HAARHT, "Things Beyond Things" is a remastered demo 'afterthought' on OM, "Noisy Pink Bubbles" is offset by a whack of silence on Infinity (though acoustic bonuses were added later too), Physicist has "Forgotten" (a.k.a. "Bad Devil!"), "Humble" is a bizarre ambient experiment on Terria, "Info Dump" is a noisescape after Alien's last statement, and "Sunshine and Happiness" is an obvious add-on for Synchestra.

The only problem on that album is the noise at the end of The Fluke.

I forgot, what's on the 2nd disk?
I need that bear.
I liked it, but Devin's voiceover was too distracting for me to really get into it.Yeah this.
I think this sums up my thoughts rather well: If you thought Addicted was one of the happiest albums of all time, this is like Addicted receiving a blowjob while high on every substance in the universe.
Seriously, the joy in True North and Liberation is amazingly contagious. I don't think I'll ever have a bad day ever again.
I was trying to pre-order this soon-to-be masterpiece, and I couldn't find Devy's US page to order from (I'm from NYC). I would just pick it up locally, but I want Devin to get the most money from my pocket. Where should I go for this?
what are everyone's thoughts on "Voices in the Fan?" it seems like a really underrated mid-album tune on (basically) a perfect album, and is a great example of Dev's industrial-meets-prog approach from back in the day.Oh my god there's so much for me to talk about WHERE DO I EVEN START?
and since i brought up OM — anyone else find it better suited as a companion to/dichotomy with Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, and that Infinity is the actual counterpart with City? i ask because the typical pairing is OM and City, since they happened in the same year, but methinks the only reason that happened is because OM had to be re-recorded; otherwise it would've been out in '96. also, Dev typically makes sister albums have very similar production styles, which is primarily the reason why HAARHT and OM sound more alike, and City and Infinity. (further examples: Alien and Synchestra + Accelerated Evolution and SYL, both of which are confirmed pairs).
Now, as for the sister albums, I've done a lot of thinking about this. You'll notice a lot of times that there will be nods to the sister album in their respective (the Love? reprise in Notes From Africa, for example). In Ocean Machine, there are several references to "the city", while there's no reference to Infinty on City, nor the other way around. In Room 429, the lyric is "Don't look to the ocean, restless in its dreaming". I understand that song's a cover, but the lyrics fit flawlessly with the rest of the album.
The other thing is, Infinity was made after his diagnosis of having bipolar disorder. He realized that the two sides of OM and City came from the disorder, and sought to bring them together into one album. Thus, Infinity has no sister album because it wasn't produced alongside anything else. This trend continued with Physicist and Terria. When SYL came back, the sister album concept returned as well.
If HAARHT has to have a sister album, I'd say it's the Punky Bruster album.
I'm not sure what I think about the new Kingdom honestly, I might just keep listening to the Physicist version. It feels much more fast-paced and energetic, and the drum sound and some of the vocal phrasing in the new version kinda bugs me.The vocals are fucking amazing. So opera.
...Then again I've only listened to the new version once or twice, so maybe I'll change my mind :P
I have finally gotten into Devin Townsend. This is the correct course of action.
Where/How did you guys listen to it already? There was a show yesterday. People who bought VIP tickets got the album. A lot of people have it, but there hasn't been a major full-scale leak yet because everyone (on the Dev forum at least) is enjoying watching people suffer.
Not that I'm going to, I want the first time to be straight off the vinyl :)
Where/How did you guys listen to it already?
Album of the year, by far. I know it's still going through the "new toy" fascination, but I'm still pretty sure it could end up beating Deconstruction (at the very least, Addicted).I need to give it some serious listening, but from what I've listened to, I don't know if it'll beat Addicted, as of now it's not getting past Baroness and Gorod, might not get past Periphery for me, and honestly that kind of disappoints me. I'll give it a few more listens tonight though.
Grace is probably one of the best tracks over the course of the DTP.Honestly, it might be his best song ever. The build of everything is just so immense. Every repetition of every part there's a new layer added in that changes it up significantly.
I was surprised by the lack of "staples" or "hits" aside from Kingdom and Vampira. War must have been an awesome left-field surprise. It was a nice surprise seeing it on the setlist they laid on the floor right in front of me :p
You know, Hold On just played again (yes, I'm on another listen lol) and its already growing on me. Save Our Now is the only thing holding this album back from being a perfect run of songs. It just kind of...is there.Give it time. It's unfortunate that it's wedged between Where We Belong and Kingdom, but it's just as strong as the rest of them if you ask me.
Save Our Now is the only thing holding this album back from being a perfect run of songs. It just kind of...is there.

I almost wrecked my bike while doing Devin's monkey hands earlier.... :sadpanda:My friend and I were doing the whole dance when he played it live. We started a movement because everyone followed us in the finger pointing thing and the jazz hands during the chorus.
AND A MONKEEEEE
And no, this is not better than Addicted. I love this album so much, but Addicted forever remains untouchable territory.

Nice impression of somebody who's wrong.
No Anneke lead vocal tracks makes Epicloud > Addicted!I was totally with you until right about here. lolno
So far, the standouts to me are:I caught it when that first sample came out, so yeah.
Where We Belong
Save Our Now
Grace
And not to point out what might be the obvious, but can I assume everyone is catching the Slow Me Down reference in Hold On?

ok black_floyd:sadpanda:
Save Our Now is the best song he has ever done. Hands Down.
I'm pretty sure this will rocket past Addicted, my previous favorite Devin Townsend Project and DT in general album
It's absolutely crushing.
A couple listens in now, does anyone else find the rest of True North a bit of a letdown following that incredible beginning? Okay, the ending is great, but the bulk of the song isn't doing a lot for me...yet.True North and Grace are easily the most dense songs on the album. I fucking love the shit out of both of them though. The chord progression at 1:20 in True North makes me want to get up and dominate the entire universe.
Just about everything else is sounding no worse than really good, and much of it is flooring me, especially the beginning of Save Our Now. My God. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :metal :metal

Actually, I was thinking a lot about this earlier, but this album seems to not have as much in the way of Devin vocals. It seems like it's heavily focused on the choir and Anneke. Sure, he has a lot of vocals (as he should, it's a solo album after all), but the ratio of Devin > other people seems a bit lower than it did on Addicted.
Oh she's on it. Very noticeable on it. Just not in the same way that he incorporated her for Supercrush! or Hyperdrive!.
Oh she's on it. Very noticeable on it. Just not in the same way that he incorporated her for Supercrush! or Hyperdrive!.
Aww. :(
That's sad. As I am not the biggest fan of her solo work recently since it's getting increasingly upbeat and generic. I really loved her on Addicted and was hoping for more of those soaring lead vocals.
There's a song with Anneke on lead vocals on the album, the iTunes version has a bonus song called "Take my Ego" and its up for previews, its pure bliss guys, pure bliss! :hefdaddyI hate how I'll have to buy the Itunes version just to hear a bonus song. I hate that Itunes always has the bonus songs and it fucking annoys me.
I plunked Juno into my Epicloud playlist right after Grace. Such a good tune. Not sure why Devin would relegate it to b-side status.Juno really should have been on this album somewhere. Replace Divine or something. Its too good not to include somewhere other than a $100 box set :P
Those of you who have been to see Devy live recently....does he have booty shorts for sale at his merch table??
I feel fucking awesome right now :lolThose of you who have been to see Devy live recently....does he have booty shorts for sale at his merch table??
If he did I would buy the shit out of those.
But unfortunately no.
Edit: Also I just google searched "Devin Townsend booty shorts" and your top 50 was the first result. :lol

I'm completely and utterly hooked on Save Our Now. Best song I've heard in ages.:tup
Really tempted to listen to this but I want to wait for when my copy comes in the mail. :(
Hows the quality on the second CD tracks?
I'm disappointed in this forum. Am I the only one who ordered the CMDistro pre-order. Teddy and cdAll my money is going towards this Sunday when I see him.

Suffers like much of his catalog from not sounding that great, but there are some really good songs on here and I like the mix up in style as compared to the prior albums. Anneke is always is welcomed voice.Seriously what is wrong with you
I'd say it's some sort of chemical imbalance that allows me to know I have fully functioning ears, but still listen to Devin Townsend. :pBut you like Shadow Gallery??????

Z2 will be surround...promise.

I am really getting down about how Annekes vocals are being described. :(
Which is sad cause her solo project will never make anything as good as what Devy writes.

Don't be worried. She doesn't have a lot of solo spots, but she adds a lot of texture and the solos she does get are incredible.
I am expecting minimum use of Anneke.
This way, the worst case scenario is that I'm right, best case scenario I'm happily surprised.

That's how music should be listened to, always.
Physicist is very underappreciated, I love it.
A remix of the album would definitely help but I think half of the songs are pretty forgettable anyways.
Guess what awaited me in the mail... Got my lucky animal, its nice and soft, but a lot of fur around the eyes.Lyrics inside?
Gonna listen to the CD now. I really like how the linear booklet came a simple slip in the middle you can, pull out.

Just got back from the concert.
Devin Townsend Project - One of the most intense experiences I've ever been in, it was simply amazing.
Katatonia - I really do not like them, the vocalist hinders what could be a great band with terrible range, and just not fitting the music.
Paradise Lost - Very fun, glad to see legends.
Stolen Babies - Incredibly fun band, and I hope they find success!
Maybe a bit premature...but I think this could very well be my album of the year.
I'll first wait and see what Muse can do about that.
It was very radular to see you too man, :yarrJust got back from the concert.

It was cool to see you at the show man.
I have big self indulgent review that I will be doing when I wake up. It was one of the best nights of my life.
Kingdom is amazing but once it goes into that punk-ish sound it goes downhill for me. Here's to hoping he rerecords The Death of Music and Bastard as well. How can he improve on perfection?
Non-shitty mixing for the former.Just...
Interesting that he's thinking about bringing Victim back for Z2. I'm not sure if I'm down with the idea of having remakes shoved into the context of a different album all the time. Kingdom and Hyperdrive! worked out pretty well, but I'm not sure how long that streak can be kept up.
I assume that's a bonus song?Someone didn't read the rest of that post. :P

Damn, this album has a lot of bonus tracks.
-All the songs from the 2nd disc
-"Cry Forever" and "Take My Ego" which you can buy from iTunes right now
-Title track exclusive to vinyl
Am I missing any? :S
...Also, anyone bummed about the lack of lead vocals from Anneke needs to look no further than Take My Ego. She sings pretty much the whole song.
Thankfully you can buy both of the songs individually and not have to pay for the rest of the album!

Oh indeed I will. But unless I feel like burning it to a CD (which I won't) then I can't listen to those bonus songs in my car. Ah well.

Solution: Get a better home stereo
I went to the HMV at the mall here to grab Epicloud and to my great dismay it was not in. The lady behind the counter said they were supposed to be in today but didn't arrive yet. Thankfully I reserved a copy so when they do arrive (they're expecting a few to arrive at some point), the store will call me and I can go and get it. I still haven't heard the disc in full yet - I listened to Lucky Animals and True North and the snippet video, but I wanted to try to keep the album fresh.
So I listened to half the CD or so so far.
Liked Effervescent, but didn't really care for True North or Lucky Animals. I like the intro to True North, but didn't really care for the rest of it. And Lucky Animals was catchy but still meh. However I loved Liberation and Where We Belong.
Also the mix is......hmmm..........not as great as I had hoped but certainly not bad. It seems the triggered Kick drum has a bit too much low end, and the crash cymbals are quite a bit too low in the mix.

A good mix isn't supposed to played at one specific volume.
If it ONLY sounds good blasting loud, then it's not a good mix.
Metallica said the same thing about Death Magnetic.
You seem annoyed that we either aren't agreeing with you or don't care enough to listen for what you are talking about.
In my case, it's the latter; I don't care.
But I am happy you are enjoying the CD. :tup :tup

It's not that you don't agree or don't care. It's that you guys are either telling me I'm wrong in my opinion or that I'm wrong for thinking about it as opposed to just saying "Oh, that's a valid opinion, now let's talk about how awesome whatever song is".
Speaking of the 2nd disk, does everyone's have a bit of silence at the end of each track? :/ It's really annoying.
Lucky Animals is probably the only song I can think of that manages to be mind-invadingly catchy while still being a good song.
Fuck that, it's an awesome song.
Oh well. We can't all be right about these kind of things I suppose.
Men. I give it a 5 out of 10.I'd give it a 6/10. I'm listening to it now and it has grown on me since my first listen but its still one of my least favorites.

6/10 sounds fine. It's not a bad song by any means, just doesn't have that spark that most of his songs have.

Ladies and Gentlemen I, AM THE MIGHTY MASTURBATOR!..........I mean here is my interview with Mr. Hevy Devy himself, Devin Townsend.
Lots of good Dev questions answered, don't pass this one up:

Will be seeing Devin (with Katatonia) on Saturday! :metalI'll be there wearing my green Scale the Summit shirt with a panda on it. The other guy that's going with me is quite large, so you should be able to find me.
And, there's a potential meet-up with numbers and true life of death, because they'll be at the same show.
Anyone else going?
Devin played Babysong live last night.
...what. :|

Very cool interview. Thanks for posting it up! Glad you were able to hold it together as I'm not certain I would have been able to. Can't believe he's already pretty much worked up cd of material for CoC. That's not really my thing but I know Dev will make it so interesting I won't have any choice but to enjoy it.
Sunday Afternoon is awesome.
They're good songs, but I can see where he's coming from by leaving them off.Yes.
Still listening to the album on and off. As far as I'm concerned, the album really starts at "Liberation" and I agree with Adami that the cymbals are too low in the mix. Still a good and fun album with plenty of amazing moments though.
From what I understand, its a 2 hour show. Don't completely quote me on that, but I'm about 80% sure its 2 hours. Also it will be filmed for DVD/Blu Ray.
Ehh. First listen and I'm not hugely impressed. Lucky Animals is still good and More! is one of the best things he's ever done but other than that I didn't find it that great. Maybe it's a grower.
I've listened I think 3 times now. It's good, but nothing special. But if it's a grower, then I hope that changes.
True North has grown on me a lot. I liked it when I first heard the album but I think its a great way to start the album off, along with Effervescent!.
True North is awesome. You guys are just silly. Seriously, that chord progression after the intro could shift planets.
Yes yes, we know that we can't say you guys are being silly and disagree, be right back, burning my copy of Epicloud.True North is awesome. You guys are just silly. Seriously, that chord progression after the intro could shift planets.

Obviously I was exaggerating with the burning of Epicloud, it's a great album, I just think you're overreacting to us disagreeing with the song True North. I myself find it to be a breathtaking song, I feel the song is a perfect album opener, it just rattles my mind with the intensityit puts out, and I find Devin's singing on this track particularly Devysome~Yes yes, we know that we can't say you guys are being silly and disagree, be right back, burning my copy of Epicloud.True North is awesome. Yes, because saying the cymbals are little quiet and that the middle of True North isn't as great as the rest is the same as saying that Epicloud sucks.

This has grown on me but I still don't think it's that great. Lucky Animals is annoying.No.
edit: So is More!NO.
Currently listening to Epicloud for the first time, and it's a bit too happy for my tastes. I prefer the more darkish stuff of Terria and Ocean Machine.
I gotta say, I love the second disc almost as much as the first. Not all the songs are good, but there are definitely gems. Between this and the Ghost II tracks, Devy would have had another awesome "mellow" album on his hands.
The second disc is almost as amazing as the first. Love Tonight is a thing of sheer beauty.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It didn't bother me all that much, but it's pretty similar. I love the hell out of Socialization (mainly because of the TONIGHT. WE DINE. AT DENNY'S! bit) because it's as close as it could possibly get to what I'd imagine SYL would sound like if Devin got them back together today.
This is definitely the best of the DTP albums so far.

Anneke <3
Love for Anneke but no love for Addicted where she has several lead vocal moments? My mind, she is blown.
So I thought long and hard about the new vinyl albums and if I should buy them or not, but I finally caved in and ordered the blue vinyl of Ocean Machine and the green of Terria. While Devin is not one of my all time favorites (though I am indeed a fan of him), I do consider these two albums to be his best, and seeing how awesome they looked (and how limited they will be) the opportunity was just too good to pass. Oh well.
He is now forgiven for ruining Sex & Religion.
He is now forgiven for ruining Sex & Religion.
Only one problem with that equation: Steve Vai isn't even remotely as brilliant a musician as Devin and Zappa. I mean, he's a phenomenal guitarist, but come on.
I am not a Devin fan. Let's get that out of the way.
But what a fucking glorious album Epicloud is :heart :hefdaddy
It does play to the hair metal fan in me I guess- and it's unlikely to change my opinion of his previous work (that I've heard)- but I love this album. He is now forgiven for ruining Sex & Religion.
Michael Keene from The Faceless, you can hear the Devy influence on Autotheism. He is now forgiven for ruining Sex & Religion.
I remember his performance being criticised heavily at the time, but considering what he has achieved since I would of thought people would now look back & re-evaluate. I think you could see he was a genius back then & gave that album real character.
Also it was ordained by the gods that Mr Vai passed the baton of genius on, the question now is who does Devin hand it on to ???
Frank Zappa --> Steve Vai --> Devin Townsend --> ?
Sure, but Devin and Zappa both delivered us at least 10 albums that eat Passion and Warfare up and vomit it into a bowl of shit.Only one problem with that equation: Steve Vai isn't even remotely as brilliant a musician as Devin and Zappa. I mean, he's a phenomenal guitarist, but come on.
The man who gave Passion & Warfare to the world. Listen to that album and behind all the great guitar playing lies the soul of a master musician. But I guess thats just my opinion :)
I'm,addicted to Happy Birthday. It's the perfect song for how i'm feeling at the moment..
Synchestra is without a doubt my least favourite Devin Townsend album.

i find it bloated at the start, actually - takes four minutes across two sections to get into "Triumph," then it's followed by the cringeworthy "Babysong" (sorry, can't stand the melodies and repetition!), then it gets good and, imo, stays good. the pacing and the songwriting from "Vampolka/Vampira" onward is pretty killer.

That is pretty much the point of the album. He wanted to make you wait for the climax and he did it. Although the later half is a bit bloated to me, but I still enjoy it.
I am quite positive this is my least favourite of the project albums thus far.

Listening to my blue vinyl of Ocean Machine now, it sounds as good as it looks. One song I want to praise a bit that I don't see that much fuzz for (at least not in the recent topX Devin-lists), is Regulator. That song is major kickass. The screams in the beginning, the riffs.. everything really. :metal

I'll probably get crucified for saying this, but Earth Day, while a great song, is pretty overrated. I don't get why so many people consider it his best song ever.

It's not my number 1, but it's top 5. Probably because it's one of his most emotional performances ever.
How is no one talking about this right now? For us folks who can't make it to the Retinal Circus in person, get the chance (for a minor, nominal fee which I am more than willing to shove into Devy's pocket) to watch the entire performance via steam. Fuck going out on that Saturday, I'm gonna sit in my dorm, get snacks and indulge in 3 fucking hours of Devy.

If he doesn't play at least one SYL song at the Retinal Circus I will be disappointed.I'd honestly be shocked if there wasn't one. Love? has to happen. Hell, I even have my hopes up for Far Beyond Metal.

Soooo I've had Epicloud long enough to make some conclusions about it.
First and foremost in my mind is that Grace is ungodly boring and definitely one of my least favorite songs of his.
And YES I do realize people here seem to like it a lot. Hate away :loser:
I think Ziltoid is an incredibly consistent album, there aren't any songs that I don't like, but it really lacks some standout songs that are really, really good and thus it's one of Devy's lesser albums.By Your Command

Does anyone else think that Epicloud kinda peaks at Grace then it starts going down hill from there? The other songs are good they just aren't as good as the ones before them imo.

I think I've created another Devy fan, which is always a good thing. My kid can't get enough of Lucky Animals. He thinks the lyrics are "And a mom and a mom and a monkey!" though but whatevs.
DEVIN Y U NO PLAY CLEVELAND GOD DAMMIT
Retina Circus is today, just two hours until show time. Who is watching the stream? I can't wait.
Retinal Circus was outrageously epic! Setlist was great, some pleasant surprises. And the show was just totally and utterly mad. What other gig has anyone here been to that at some point had a giant vagina on the stage which gave birth to a baby Ziltoid?!

It was Chuck Billy from Testament. No idea why though, nor why he was wearing such an absurd outfit!
I think Devlab is cool, but I can rarely listen to it from start to finish. But The Hummer is amongst the best things he's done, IMO. Maybe even the best pre-DTP album.Thats a odd thought. The Hummer being better than Terria, Ocean Machine, City, Alien, Synchestra, Accelerated and Ziltoid? nah

Not gonna bother with VIP unless Devy does it again. I mean it would be cool to do for Gojira but like...they don't quite get my panties nearly as soaked as touching Devy's bald head does.
So Retinal Circus (at least the live webcast) was completely amazing. Surprised so little is being said about it.
Very cool to see Steve Vai, didn't expect him. The guy on Planet Smasher totally rocked the song. The stage theatrics were brilliant and of course the highlight (for me) was the almost overdose of Anneke. She is the love of my life and I couldn't get enough of her.
My only gripe was all of the vocals that Devin didn't end up singing. Especially in Vampira.
Ah well, REALLY looking forward to the Blu Ray.
Just found out that Morgan Ågren is the drummer for Devin's Casualties of Cool! :metal :corn :metal

Cool! I'm really looking forward to this!
Oh and cool that Steve Vai joined Devin on stage!
Oh, he was just attending?
So, I've decided that Devin needs to control the laws of time and space and release that Retinal Circus DVD right god damn now. I would love to see/hear it again, but this time shot/mixed professionally.
Also hope they're mixed better than the Addicted/Decon shows.

He does explain why they were mixed that way on the commentaries. Looks like he kept Anekke away from the drums this time.

I think he did an amazing job, considering he had what....3 weeks to miss all 4 shows? I just hope the circumstances are better this time and the backing tracks aren't so dominating.
I know right. I was wondering why Anekke was low and laughed when he said why.
QuoteI know right. I was wondering why Anekke was low and laughed when he said why.
What was his reason ?

Because if any louder, her voice would have caused every male watching (which let's face it, is 110% of the audience) to get intense erections and rape their TVs which could result in the elimination of his fanbase.
Well it was either that or because she was standing too close to the drums and her mic picked up a crap load of cymbals.
You weren't attacked. Several of us just didn't think it was as big a deal as you did, and you got annoyed by that. That's all. :)
Any recommendations for what I should pick up next? I realize Devin Townsend is a mixed bag and extremely varied, but I only have Deconstruction so far. I like that it doesn't take itself too seriously and I appreciate the dark humor in it, but I don't know if I care to get into another 10+ albums if all his releases like this. I prefer more metal to anything else, but I'm willing to try any of them.

From what I can tell, it's both. The backing tracks are just so loud that they overpower her. Haven't heard the commentary either.
I thought Kat Epple sang on the album too, didnt' she?
So I'm watching the Ghost DVD right now, and I have a quick question. I haven't heard the whole commentary for this show and don't want to at the moment, so please help if you can.
Is that really Kat singing her parts? Or did Devin replace her vocals with the girl from the CD after the fact? Cause god damn do they sound identical.
Well then, it's definitely not her. It sounds identical to the album. From what I can tell, it's both. The backing tracks are just so loud that they overpower her. Haven't heard the commentary either.
I doubt he had all of the other girls lead vocals as overpowering backing tracks. I can only hear 1 voice when she sings, it's either her or the girl from the CD.
Erm... Devin is selling glassware (https://www.bandstores.co.uk/shop/devintownsend/products.php?cat=2036)? Did he hire Gene Simmons as his new manager? :omg:
Oh, and speaking of SYL.
SYL the greatest metal band of all times. Just had to be said.
-------
Update from Dev's Twitter:
Casualties is almost done, and though different, it's a great vibe and different from anything I've done, though close to the darkness of Ki
As for the glassware thing, I think it might be something that all Northern Music Company artists have now. Opeth just announced they were selling the exact same glasses.Oh yeah, just saw that on blabbermouth (https://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=182491). The comments cracked me up.
Fuckin' Epicloud is kicking my fuckin' ass right fuckin' now. I've been in this really good mindset lately and as it turns out this album only intensifies said mindset.
Anneke is truly my angeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.
What did he play?
Saw him live for the first time today. That was awesome! :)Indeed, it was.

Save Our Now is the stand out for me, but yes, they are all great and the entire album is great. I think it's become my favorite Devy album (out of the ones I have, which is only a handful in the grand scheme of his vast discography).Haven't listened to Epicloud much yet, since I've only been listening to Devin since last week, but Save Our Now is very fantastic indeed.

Even on my worst days, when I feel like crying and sitting in the dark(like last night) it really cheers me up.
There's not a weak song on that entire disc. I'm partial to Save Our Now, Grace, and More! though. Of course, Liberation is still amazing.
I don't get the dislike for those two songs. There's not a weak song on that entire disc. I'm partial to Save Our Now, Grace, and More! though. Of course, Liberation is still amazing.
True North and Lucky Animals. Nothing after that is bad though.
I love True North but I'm not that crazy about Lucky Animals. It has grown on me a bit though. There's not a weak song on that entire disc. I'm partial to Save Our Now, Grace, and More! though. Of course, Liberation is still amazing.

I really don't get the hate for True North. It's got Anneke in a more prominent role, a great riff, and an awesome bridge after the "Let's tear it up!" bit.
I love this album. I don't like anything else I've heard from him but this album is glorious. It's physically impossible to like Epicloud but dislike Addicted, so I suggest you revisit it.
It will feature high in my top 20 of 2012. Whouda thought it?
Also. Epicloud > Addicted!:yeahright
Really loving EPICLOUD, hell, even the bonus disc EPICLOUDER is pretty killer. Not sure why it's labeled a "collection of demos". Most of them are top notch quality. Should have just been a double album.Have you heard the iTunes bonus demos Cry Forever and Take My Ego? They're both available to buy individually.
No, I haven't, thanks for the tip, I will check it out.
I just wish he had cleaned the sound up a bit on it.
It sounds a little muffled, like the highs really aren't as high as they should be, sonically speaking. It not being a "finished" song from the Epicloud album, I am not surprised, but I sure wish he had cleaned that song up in particular. I still love it as is.

thanks!!
Changed the artwork in iTunes for two of Devin's albums.
(Christeen cover vs. Infinity cover)
The slipcase covers on the DTP albums are better than the actual covers themselves.Hell to the no. Only one that fits that description is Ghost. Ki, Addicted, and especially Deconstruction all have much better album covers than slipcases.

From what I can remember, Accelerated Evolution is loved here, it's a fantastic album for sure :tupIk its loved, but it should be even more loved :D
I only have Epicloud. I bought it a few weeks ago and it blew my mind. My favorite song would have to be Save Our Now. It's just epic. That's my favorite song too! It makes me feel happy even on the worst of days :)
I never really got the love for AE, especially for Deadhead. I mean, sure, it's a cool song, but Devy has so many songs I enjoy far more that I'm always a little perplex when someone proclaims it to be the best song that he's ever recorded.
Dry? I think its one of his best productions!I never really got the love for AE, especially for Deadhead. I mean, sure, it's a cool song, but Devy has so many songs I enjoy far more that I'm always a little perplex when someone proclaims it to be the best song that he's ever recorded.
Yay someone who feels the same. AE just isnt clicking for me yet, might be because I find the prodruction really dry, Storm is way better than Deadhead.
Oh man, I just saw that Devy is coming to Tempe, AZ on Jan 28. I'd love to see him Live. Unfortunately, that happens to also be my wife's due date...
wonder what she would say if I snuck out of the hospital to catch a concert.
If anyone wants a setlist I will post it.
It would be nice to go see Devin live and NOT hear Supercrush for once.
I know it will change somewhat. I've been trying to get RVP to tell me what songs will be played live this time around and he is keeping it quiet.
As possible spoiler, but maybe just in my mind. I've been trying for a year and a half to get them to play Storm, and Ryan told me the last time we hung out in September that they have been rehearsing it because I keep asking for it. So.....Maybe?
A lot of regulars that I'm happy to see every time and then some I don't really care about seeing again.Pretty much this. I mean, at least I'm seeing Devy again but like...needs more variety.
meh.
I'm super happy with the Decon songs. It's the Epicloud ones I'm not too crazy about aside from the obvious one.
animal animal
Fuck last night was fun. Devy was at the top of his game as always, and is still the best frontman ever. The charismatic energy he lets off is just unbelievable. I don't think he can ever make staples like Kingdom a boring experience.
However, Gojira stole the fucking show for me. I don't think I've seen many metal bands perform live with such ferocity as these french mother fuckers. This is a band you can not pass up seeing, people. They will blow you out of the fucking water.

I'm sorry but no. Addicted is like...perfect the entire way through. Epicloud is awesome but has a few dips here and there. Plus, the Addicted friday is a god damn tradition so get off my lawn.Indeed. Besides, even Devin agrees that Addicted is more about a "delusional sense of optimism" as opposed to Epicloud which is more rounded and truer to life. I could see an Epicloud Wednesday, maybe.
Why choose? Enjoy Both equally! This, although I give Epicloud a slight edge, both are just absoluteły stunning!
Alright, anyone, what's the deal with Ghost 2?
I haven't heard any of the songs that have already been released, are they worth hunting down?
Of the three others, I think Drench is the best; I love the vibe in that song. And it's so unlike all of his other stuff.
It's a bit uneven (Babysong is awful) but it still has some of Devy's best. A flawed album for sure, but still one worth hearing.Never got why people think Babysong is awful, it's a good track
I think people don't like the lyrics, and the waltz feel bothers some people. I love it though. Synchestra's great. Common complaints are that it drags a bit, A Simple Lullaby especially. Those people are both wrong and silly.
The New Black is my favorite Strapping album. *runs and hides*Mine too, easily.
It's great, but you're both irreversibly horribly wrong. City and Alien are miles better.
Haven't checked out Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing, Punky Bruster or the two ambient albums yet.
It's a fantastic record, for sure. Liberation, Where We Belong, Save Our Now, and Grace are all god-tier Devin.
Why is that perfectly valid opinion so hilarious?
Why is that perfectly valid opinion so hilarious?
Because The New Black is easily the safest, least aggressive, least SYL album of the bunch. Also the songs suck and the band sounds uninspired, making Devin giving up on it totally a lack of surprise.
Other than that, no particular reason.
Jaq's got a point. It really feels like he was doing it just to complete the record deal.
And honestly, the less heavy, safe, tounge-in-cheek style COULD have worked if the songs were just better. While you've got some great tracks like Far Beyond Metal, Anti-Product and Hope, there's some total clunkers like You Suck and Fucker, and the rest are just kinda average.
If you can't stand ultra-heavy, rage-filled music I could see why you would like The New Black much more than the other SYL albums, but it's definitely in the bottom five Devin records for me.
People are saying The New Black is the best SYL album?Clearly the stuff that lets you appreciate good music. :neverusethis:
God, what are you guys smoking? Pass it over here please. :lol

Oh.... you've never listened to it.
Hope. :metal
on my copy of the CD its Heaven Send.....
You're welcome.:2metal:
In other news, Decon is currently kicking my ass. It's far better than I remember it being.
And just so it happens, I was completely apeshit wrong about this record. It has gotten me out of a bad mood today unlike any other music I've listened to lately. I'm on 'Divine' now, and song after song they just click away with me. Seems like there's a narrative going on that I didn't quite catch on the first few listens. The unexpected 'simplicity' of the songwriting kind of masked it for me at first. This album is full of good songwriting, layers, and above all full of positivity and life. I don't know what else to say. I was wrong. About. This. Record. You, my son, are on the path to redemption and holiness.
So like...for the last several months I've been on this "Grace isn't that great anymore" mindset. Welp, this entire week this song has kicked my ass every morning. I just can't help but shout "NEVER FEAR LOVE" all the god damn time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNZXT7GhLpcSupposed in what sense? It's not like it was just a typo on the original album, the DTP boxset has it as Heaven Send as well.
Devin himself says that it's supposed to be Heaven's End in the Ki commentary, and some Twitter post by him that I won't bother trying to find says basically the same thing.
After listening to Synchestra extensively during my two-day outing, I have come to the conclusion that it is awesome throughout, except for A Simple Lullaby which drags a little, but I can easily forgive that. Also, I have never encountered a track that is quite as infectiously happy and still awesome as Sunshine and Happiness.I love Synchestra. A Simple Lullaby is a fantastic slow-builder, but it took me a very long time to warm up to it.
Show some love for Synchestra, DTF!

I'll take that kind of humor over the 'humor' in "Deconstruction" any day.
The fart noises are fine. Stop caring so much.Pretty much this. It's like 10 seconds total of a 10 minute song. And it's a fucking awesome song.
Deconstruction is a 10/10 untouchable masterpiece. This man knows what's up.
Song and album.
I love Ocean Machine.
In case you haven't heard of this, my version of Save Our Now and Pendulum's Island:

LMAO!!!!! :rollin
This, along with his Rammstein remix, are examples why Devy is my favourite musician. He can just have fun doing his job.Wow, I had never heard that one before and I just listened to it. Fantastic :rollin :rollin
I heard a couple songs, and DT is something I definitely need to come more acquainted with. I just got the discography and I'm ready to dive in. :metal

Punky is awesome.This, but
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU GUYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYS
Yeah but it's no introduction to Devy.That. It's a great satire and it's actually pretty brilliant, musically. It's really much better once you've gotten accustomed to Devin's strange sense of humor. I would really very highly recommend starting with the DTP though, namely Addicted. Some of his older stuff meanders quite a bit, and that can turn some listeners off. After repeated listens, it's obvious why a lot of his older stuff meanders so much (to let the layers jump out individually), but I feel like someone who isn't used to Devin's music wouldn't appreciate it as much. It's a lot to take in.
Got myself a little something today after much thought:
He actually said in an interview directly after that it was a mistake because he now feels like he confused a bunch of fans who are gonna reboot the "Are you gonna play more SYL?" question again.Thats kind of why I hate my life. I could have been there mang. :'(
10. AddictedThat's interesting :eek
Casualties.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ4aU_i3oacWhat was that? The video was removed.

are those...hockey jerseys? :lol
Where can I buy one? :metal
I meant the jersey, but if you know of a place where I can buy a Canadian, that'd be pretty rad too. :metalWhere can I buy one? :metal
a Canadian?
Is Epicloud considered part of that group? I was just thinking about the main DTP 'set'.Well it's a DTP only because he liked the logo, but still...
Does not compute.It does.
1. EpicloudThis!
2. Addicted/Ki
3. Ghost
4. Deconstruction
I will never get the Addicted! fanboyism here.Maybe it's because you have the title wrong. :P
Decon>Ki>Epicloud>Addicted!>Ghost
1. Addicted
3. Ghost
4. Deconstruction
5. Ki
on a side note, I picked up Accelerated Evolution yesterday and I really love it. I wish I would have gotten it sooner.Awesome album :tup It was my introduction to the world of HevyDevy.
3. Addicted:tup
"So, the time has come to take the next step with DTP and incorporate live keys instead of all computer. That's been the plan since the start"I'm really excited reading this. I didn't really mind the backing tracks, but actually having all (or almost all) the music played live on stage is so much better. Hopefully this means that Anneke will tour with him at least once in North America but I'm not holding my breath.
"Eventually it'll all be live (choirs etc) but small steps while we learn. Also started using a combo of axe fx and amps... Big plans ahead!"
"And for keys (and visuals) the one and only @mikestjean !"
"Obviously it won't happen overnight, hoping for Z2 for it to debut."
So is Ziltoid 2 the next album? What's happening with Casualties of Cool?
Accelerated Evolution
Accelerated Evolution
Quite possibly the greatest gift I have ever received....

Accelerated Evolution
didn't care for Ziltoid.(https://puu.sh/p8PE)
It has its moments. I love Solar Winds and Hyperdrive, to name two. The overtly heavy nature of it kind of puts me off, the riffs feel samey. For Devin I guess I much more prefer his melodic side.didn't care for Ziltoid.(https://puu.sh/p8PE)
Ziltoid is low-tier Devin, imo.(https://i.imgur.com/KvUBpMP.gif)
Ziltoid is low-tier Devin, imo.
Ziltoid is low-tier Devin, imo.I mostly agree. The songwriting just isn't as focused and creative. The Greys is awesome as all hell, and Color Your World is probably a top 20 Devin song too, but N9, Ziltoidia Attaxx, and By Your Command (come at me) are all sub-par.

I think Ziltoid suffers a bit from having a split personality. There's about three different types of album trying to get out of it - a comedy album, an SYL album and a career metaphor album.Pretty much this. Which is why I look forward to Z2 anyway, he seems to be in a more comfortable place musically and is able to keep a project focused, as DTP proved.
There's some brilliant stuff on there, but it does meander a bit at times

The version on Addicted is so much better that it's not even funny.This.
Just listen to both together :laugh:Thank you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elSqts3_YzI
I've also tried to justify it as an allegory for Devin's life as a musician, but that one falls apart pretty badly with the coffeehouse thing.I think it still works with the coffeehouse thing. I think of it like a lot of Terria, specifically Earth Day ("And after all you're just talking meat"). He's a musician and has a bunch of fans and all (Ziltoid) but in the end he's just a normal guy, no different than some lowly coffee shop worker.
I have no idea what happens in the story after Ziltoid meets with the Omni Dimensional Creator & before the guy wakes up in the coffee shop.
I was tired of the living
I was tired of it all
:heart :heart :heart
I am completely in love with AE right now.
This, Thing Beyond Things and Bastard may be my favorite devy moments in his career.
All that said...what's his most brutal, destructive music that is post-decon?That doesn't exist. Just go listen to Alien by Strapping Young Lad.
Also, what's going on with Casualties? I remember seeing somewhere that he was done with it. Should we expect a release this year?IIRC, it'll be coming out later this year or early next year. Z2 probably late next year if not later.
I hope its dangerous because I really need some excitement in my life.if you could just link me to the online gerbil fights... :police:
Betting on gerbil fights online isn't cutting it...
Cool. Very excited about that, Z2 should be cool as well. Also, what's going on with Casualties? I remember seeing somewhere that he was done with it. Should we expect a release this year?IIRC, it'll be coming out later this year or early next year. Z2 probably late next year if not later.
I'm actually more excited for Casualties than Z2. I actually don't enjoy Ziltoid as much as most people. I still like couple songs from the album, but the album feels incomplete to me.Yep same here. Though last time I listened to Ziltoid I liked it quite a bit more than before. Casualties sounds like something up my alley, and it has the singer from Ki, who was really good.
Ziltoid seems to...'slapstick' for me. I've only heard Hyperdrive because of Addicted! and I still like the latter version better. But I imagine I wouldn't enjoy it much at all. In fact, it might be the only Devy release that I actively dislike. Either way, I'm still interested in seeing how Z2 turns out if only for the possibilities. If it's more of the same, that's fine and I'll pass, but if it's something different, a different light and ambiance, then I'd be intrigued by what music that would bring. I'm not holding out for anything different though; it is called "Z2" for a reason.Since you liked Decon so much, you should give The New Black a shot.
I just finished up Decon, and at the same time, I finished myself. It was incredible. Taking a break, thinking about going to see Man of Steel again.... Hrrrmmm. Alien is almost done downloading...
Ziltoid was the album that got me into Devy and has a special place in my heart for it. I think it is one of his better albums. Comedy or not, the songs are awesome. Epicloud is my favorite thing he's done though. So much awesomeness. I'd probably put Ziltoid at 3rd or 4th.This guy knows what's up
I actually don't recommend Alien to those unfamiliar with SYL because it's just so incredibly abrasive that it kind of loses the emotion and almost borders on self-parody. City is much more emotional and melodic, and The New Black is pretty light while still maintaining the SYL sound and sense of humor.Fuck that, Alien was my first SYL album and the second album I heard from the mind of Devy.
So, basically, the order SYL should be checked out is
The New Black
City
Alien
Chickenfeather
Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing
Your ranking of Epicloud is objectively wrong.
I used to be really into the Ziltoid album. Nowadays it just seems to silly to actually listen to. It's just bogus.

From Twitter:
"Started the Casualties mix, sounding killer, but I think I need 2 more songs to balance it. Also received Retinal master today to review."
Twitter:Fantastic.
"First mixes of Casualties sounding perfect! Sweet, sweet, dark and quiet. Its good to have a record that isnt sheltered from its own nature."

Well, I know the showmanship could be the justification you need for using backingtracks, but I can't even hear what's live and what's not. Seeing the choir playback made me just look at all guitars, (are they even switched on?), or searching for enough keyboard players to play all those separate sounds, so it takes away the enjoyment of watching a great live band, play great live music. It's just something different than a live DVD, I guess. Maybe more like a musical, where just the singers and actors are on the stage.Yea this.
That aside, I really adore his way of layering in the studio, and I wouldn't want him to change that to be able to play a better live show.

In related news, I just cried a bit at Hold On + Angel. These past month or so I've been incredibly craving clear, catchy, harmonic, uplifting simple music. Epicloud is so perfect for that.
Angel is beautiful. Best song on the album, imo.
Epiclouder has some really neat stuff. I love Happy Birthday, think it should've been on the album.Agreed. That's one of my favorites.
Is there a possibility to get Epiclouder on CD? Does it come with the special edition (I think that one is still available on Amazon)?Yes, I believe it does. It's the second disc in the limited edition.
I agree that Epiclouder has more variety, but while there are a lot of songs I like a lot on it, nothing on Epiclouder is as awesome as Grace, More!, Save Our Now or Where We Belong (or the bonus track Take My Ego), so I can't say that it is better than Epicloud.

No, you're not
EDIT: Am I the only one that thinks that it looks like Devin is regenerating on this picture?

My favourite from AE :metal
My only complaint about Epiclouder is that there is a small break in between the tracks. Great songs though!
The one track on AE that I don't 'get' is Away. I seem to find it boring.
IIRC he's still writing it. Casualties of Cool will be out first. The one track on AE that I don't 'get' is Away. I seem to find it boring.
This.
Does anybody know when we can expect Z2? Has he already finished recording?
Both of you are terrible, terrible people. Away is meant to be a meandering, beautiful guitar piece about lamenting having to travel all over the place. It's placement right next to Traveler makes it obvious that it is the slower, more pessimistic answer to the upbeat predecessor. And god damn it's fabulous. Devin makes the guitar sing like nobody else I know. The one track on AE that I don't 'get' is Away. I seem to find it boring.This.

That doesn't make us terrible people :P Heck, I've only been listening to Devin for a few months, and for the first few months it was only now and then. For the last month I've been listening to his earlier solo albums, so imagine my first listen to AE as being 4 weeks ago. I might like the song in the future, but as of now I don't get it.Both of you are terrible, terrible people. Ok! So: news!! SATURDAY, AUGUST 24th, the Ziltoid invasion starts with the first radio broadcast... Under 2 weeks away!!!!
Devin Townsend @dvntownsend 5h
It starts with Ziltoid radio, then Ziltoid TV, then the album, then the show!!
Pardon my ignorance, but does anyone have rough release dates for Causalities of Cool and Z2? I can't wait to listen to both!Release dates haven't been announced, but CoC is being mastered right now I believe. Z2 is still in the writing stages.
And to set the record straight, Accelerated Evolution is Devin's best work. There is no better meld of super-heavy melodic songs in the history of music.

Grace is actually not among my favourites from Epicloud. It is a great song though.Grace is one of my least favorites on Epicloud, probably in part to how much other people praise it when it's nothing spectacular.

The farts are part of the story
I disagree, I like the original version of Kingdom more than the Epicluod one.:eek
I disagree, I like the original version of Kingdom more than the Epicluod one.
So, what ever happened with Ghost 2?
Would anyone be interested in a Strapping Young Lad survivor? We've had a few Devin Townsend ones in the past, but no SYL ones, which is a shame. I'd be happy to run one if there was enough interest.Do it.
That'd be cool, though I don't know the self-titled and HAARHT well enough.
HAARHT really isn't that terrible. I think I rank it above Chickenfeather, honestly. SYL, Rainy Season, Happy Camper, Skin Me, and Drizzlehell are all excellent.
I actually really like the self titled album though, which seems to put me in the minority :lol
There's also C:enter:###, but I can't find that song anywhere.

it was released on a vinyl single and on the Japanese TNB (usually pops on eBay every couple months for good prices). it's also in the SYL vinyl boxset.
The one that gets off his ass and starts working on Z2.You mean the guy who's been working on a shit ton of stuff this entire time, and people are just too impatient since he already spoils us with consistently fast album releases?

Canada. I like.
I've listened to Terria in full once. It's definitely different. I'm liking it, but I think I'll end up liking it a lot more down the road. When I was getting into Devin's music (which was pretty much during the summer of 2013), I thought Terria was pretty cool, but during the past 2-3 months or so it has grown on me a lot. It's one of his best albums IMO.
badger badger badger badger badger badger....
Oh my God, Devin. You're so ridiculously awesome.
IMO, the most instantly likable Devin CDs are Addicted, Infinity, Ocean Machine, Synchestra, and Epicloud.
Terria is the best, but it's so large in scope that it might take you a few listens to grasp it all.
And don't forget about Ki, Ghost, Deconstruction, etc.
Enjoy the ride. :metal :metal

AE is very good, but, to me, it is like his Black Album: a bit too streamlined in the overall sound and production. It has some great songs on it, but aside from Physicist, it is easily the Devin album I revisit the least. It just doesn't have the fury and craziness that most of his other albums do, and that applies to the overall sound rather than specific moments or songs.

My god that's a classy slick photo. I wouldn't mind that as an album cover.

And aside from the joking, he really nailed the chorus.
Addicted or Epicloud would be a great place to start.
Or if you want something much more heavy and ridiculous, Deconstruction is one of the best albums in existence.
I want to get into Devin, where do I start? The songs that got me into Devin were Bastard, Earth Day and Deadhead, you should check it out!
I wish DT had some stuff on hdtracks. I'd buy the hell out of all of it.

definitely agreed (if only for less squashing on, say, Decon), but i have a feeling he probably records at 44.1kHz or 48, so i don't feel confident there'd be a serious step up in quality unless they also took the limiter off. 24bit just isn't as big a quality change to warrant HDTracks prices, imo.

oooookay, which other Dev song is referenced in SYL's "Monument?" there's a riff that pops up a couple of times but i absolutely cannot think of which other song it is!
Lucky Animals is just like masturbation:lol
But it's precisely his goofy side that sometimes is too much for me.
Or his newer stuff like Ki and Ghost. I don't think he's any more goofy overall than he ever was.But it's precisely his goofy side that sometimes is too much for me.
I have to really be in the right mood for the goofy stuff, which is why I'm very grateful for his older material like Ocean Machine, and Accelerated evolution.
My copy of Contain Us arrived in the mail on Tuesday and it's awesome! For those who don't have it yet, it's definitely worth the $75 for the first 4 DTP albums plus the bonus CDs/DVDs.What if you already have these albums, is it worth getting anyway?
Deconstruction and Ghost are remastered for the Contain Us release. Apparently the original masters weren't good in Devin's opinion. There's a CD with leftover/bonus/unreleased DTP songs, and another containing DTP demos. The first DVD has extracted performances from Tuska Open Air 2010 and NAMM 2011 and music videos for Coast, Bend It Like Bender, Supercrush, and Julaar. The second DVD is actually a data disc which you can copy the files onto your computer. That DVD has the audio from the NAMM 2011 performance from the first DVD, a 5 song live EP, a couple of Devin's YouTube videos, song stems of Juular and Bend It Like Bend, and most importantly audio commentary for the first four DTP albums. The liner notes in the book are an interesting read as well as Devin describes the concepts behind the albums and how they all fit into one big theme. My copy of Contain Us arrived in the mail on Tuesday and it's awesome! Hows the Deconstruction remaster?
Damn... really wanna hear that... really don't wanna buy that whole set.I mean, it's a hell of a box. But don't just get it to hear the remasters, it's barely even noticeable.
To be honest, I haven't even listened to either remasters yet. And I honestly, I thought the originals sounded good to begin with. One of the main reasons why I bought Contain Us was that I didn't have the first 4 DTP albums yet (only had Epicloud up till then) and I'd figure $75 was reasonable if you're getting 4 albums worth plus 4 more discs worth of bonus content.
:censored you payed twice as much as me! Did you buy it from the European shop? Cause I actually bought mine from a merchant from Amazon who apparently had 19 more copies of it after I bought mine.To be honest, I haven't even listened to either remasters yet. WOW! I payed 137 bucks (well, in euro's) for that! I had the same reasoning as you did though, 25 dollars per album, and then some extra for the box and the bonus stuff.
Devin Townsend @dvntownsend 14h
Ha! Ok, @mikestjean made this gif from when we got lost in the Uk looking for a gig, ended up at a huge manure pile
Yeeessssss! Z2 is starting to come together! The theme of the double album is Ziltoid versus the DTP, with both getting their own album. Here are the tentative song titles!
Ziltoid:
Z2
Ziltoidian Overture
From Sleep Awake
Deathray
War Princess
March Of The Poozers
Silent Militia
EARTH
Ziltoid Goes Home
Dimension Z
DTP:
Rejoice
Fallout
Warrior Way
Midnight Sun
Loud
-untitled-
-Untitled-
Offer Your Light
Rain City
Farther On
If we're counting SYL, I think Synchestra, The New Black, and Ziltoid is easily his worst three-album run.I love all of those... But it's hard to find a bad three-album run in Devin's discography IMO.
Hey guys, I've been listening to Ocean Machine for a while and really like it. I tried some other albums but most of them have lots of harsh vocals and screams, whereas OM just have a few. Could you recommend an album like Biomech?

I've tried to like Devin Townsend for a while now, checking out full albums and enjoying a song or two here and there.Addicted has everything that I've bolded and more.
And I finally found one that has me completely hooked: Kingdom. Great song. Pop hooks, vocal acrobatics, crushing syncopated riffs. It's perfect. Checked out the album Epicloud and there are definitely a couple others on there I really like, so I'll keep listening to it.
But given that I've already tried and been disappointed by some of his full albums, I think now I need a best-of/mixed tape based on my love of this particular song!
Here's my Epicloud song-by-song mini review from a Devin newbie. Not sure why this album is front-loaded with weak songs! I'm using the Netflix ratings system (1=Hate It, 2=Didn't Like It, 3=Like It, 4=Really Like It, 5=Love It)
Effervescent: 2/5 Don't really care for this. I love acapella vocal stuff as much as the next guy, but this just doesn't fit and sounds like a bad commercial jingle.
True North: 3/5 Cool tune that gets better as it progresses, until the effervescent reprise.
Lucky Animals: 2/5 I like the dorky stage musical aspect of it, but I think some variation in the chorus motif and lyrics would help this song a lot.
Liberation: 3/5 Sounds a lot like The Wildhearts, a band I love. I'd give it a 4/5 if it weren't for the too-repetive and dumb lyric: "THE TIME HAS COME TO FORGET ALL ABOUT X AND ROCK! LET'S ROCK!"
Where We Belong: 5/5 I love mellow stuff.
Save Our Now: 5/5 I could also see The Wildhearts playing something like this. Very poppy. Love it.
Kingdom: 5/5 Probably the best song I've heard since On the Backs of Angels from ADTOE. Or probably better. I've been listening to it non-stop.
Divine: 5/5 Great tune.
Grace: 5/5 Love that intro and then the heaviness. YES. Heavy syncopation under a choir FTW.
More! 3/5 Another song that sounds very The Wildhearts-inspired. Again, I'm afraid Devin loses me on the chorus.
Lessons: 3/5 Whatever, it's fine.
Hold On: 5/5 Pretty verses. Amazing chorus. The lyrics could maybe use a polish to make them a little more intriguing, but it's so beautiful and they Do No Harm (my rule for prog lyrics).
Angel: 2/5 Good verses. Choruses are again too repetitive. And then another reprise of the baptist church singing a chewing gum jingle.
As a music listener, I personally love albums. If an album has too many weaknesses, it takes the brings the whole experience down for me and this album just has too many for me to call it a great one. But if I just listen to Where We Belong to Hold On, I have an incredible EP!
IS there anything similar to Save Our Now (whether by DTP or any other band)? Love the vibe of that song. Kept it on repeat for like 10 times.
Not sure, but for my money, the beginning of that song is the best part of the entire Epicloud record. Anneke's wordless vocals are so incredible there, it's like you are floating over clouds. :hefdaddy :hefdaddyIt's a hell of a way to start a song, it's amazing! But my favourite bit on Epicloud may just be the intro to True North.
Back when I was first getting into music big time I was given a burned copy of The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed, which was pretty new at the time. Did enjoy the album, but never really followed up with them.

Its actually "its time to forget all about the bullshit and rock" which is basically all the song is about.
Also, Ron, have you listened to Epiclouder and the two bonus songs "Cry Forever" and "Take my Ego"?

We'll probably have ZTO2 tracklisting by the end of the month.
So on the PledgeMusic site, it says 3 hours to release. does that mean we'll get download links then? :caffeine:
The download is supposed to be FLAC though (thought I read that somewhere?), should be good.
The regular album is up for download in both FLAC and 320kbps mp3.
No sign of the 2nd disc even though I bought the double digital album... Guess that's coming later.
Nah, you can still pledge and immediately get the download!
Then I'm with it. Thanks Kev. :)
Casualties disc 2 is streaming free on Deezer right now. honestly i like it just as much as disc 1!Did you find it on any other sites? Deezer isn't available in the US.

If what I am reading is correct, Drench and Mend both made it, and Watch You was on the Contain Us bonus disc, so that leaves Fall still needing a proper release. Happily, I still have them all on mp3.
I'll be curious how, if any, different Drench sounds. I absolutely love that unreleased original. :hefdaddy

Drench and Mend are exactly the same mixes, they just crossfade with the other tracks. the bonus disc also has Perspective and Moonshine, so the only Ghost 2 songs 'unaccounted for' are Fall (except it was a preorder bonus and was on the Mackie soundcloud) and Saloon (released on a USB stick to VIPers at the London By a Thread shows and available live on that release smushed together with Heart Baby, plus other performances on Unplugged and Contain Us).
the intended Ghost 2 tracklist pre-abandonment was:
Radial Highway
Drench
Mend
Fall
Watch You
Perspective
Moonshine
Saloon
One minor beef: when did Devin get goofy about where to index tracks that run into each other? This is the 2nd CD of his in a row that had the cutoff for where one track ends and another starts in a completely inexplicable place. On Epicloud, it was having the opening guitar riff in Save Our Now take up the last few seconds of Where We Belong and then it suddenly changes track numbers in the middle of it, and on the new one, having Moon end where it does and then starting Pier in that spot was a terrible decision. The end of Moon should have included the first 10-15 seconds of what is the beginning of the Pier track. Granted, those things are easily fixed with an online program like Audacity, but still, I am shocked he didn't do a better job with those two examples.

Yeah, that is annoying. Just fixed it, but it's still annoying that it needs to be fixed in the first place.

Maybe that's his way of sticking it to people who just download individual tracks (legally or illegally) instead of listening through the whole album?

All of that aside, I am really liking this new one. It is very different for him, but it's very infectious. It's like he combined new age, ambient and folk together, with a twinge of country rock, and zero metal.

There's a squiffy transition from Ants into Wild Colonial Boy on Infinity - the word "if" is split between one track and the next! - so he's been doing it since at least 1998.

What's on the 2nd disc?
In the studio with @dvntownsend to sing yet again, on some EPIC tunes! Awhaw! XxX
who dat?
Anneke?Congratulations, you've given the correct answer and you're through to the next round! :lol
I'm surprised over how much I'm liking this album, considering what I thought about Epicloud.
there's a page in the booklet of Casualties with a shot of the moon surface and it's got an upside down "t" written in the dust — looks almost exactly the same as the Terria "t" on its cover. if that's intentional, i'm... not sure what to draw from the link.
Some vocals from Z2Fucking awesome. Love the "ouch" at the end too.

Anywhere to purchase a physical copy of Casualties? Amazon which I usually do has a rather high price and is apparently out of stock as well... :TI don't know. Haven't you pledged? I have, but I'm still waiting for my 2CD version as well, and I haven't listened to the album yet.
Really want a physical copy of the 2-CD version though, haven't listened to the album yet still because I don't have a copy yet :(
I never pledged period, maybe that's why. Are there only physical copies for pledgers? No, but I imagine they won't move to a full release until they've sent out all the pledgers copies first. I don't have mine yet.
Also.
BROWN MAN! BROWN MAN! BROWN MAN!
Just felt like bumping to say the Infinity bonus demo track "Man" is a great fucking song.
It deserves praise.
In case you don't have it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1UZRGAW4-Q
Fantastic video! Jess Cope's work is great.Very much this! Love the SW videos and this one is absolutely great too!
From Twitter: "The robot in the video plays a part in Z2."
It may still at some point. Devin has a history of taking bits of old material that never made it onto a record and putting it into something that DOES end up on a record. The Infinite Waltz is what became the end of Masturbator, which was only released on an EP. The entirety of the song Soft from one of the Ass-Sordid sets was used as the beginning of Ki, and there's probably a bunch of others that I'm neglecting to remember.
The outro section - you know, with Ziltoid's speech over it, ending in "I am the mighty masturbator!" - is, musically, nearly or even completely identical to the Infinite Waltz section from Processional, released on the Ass-Sordid Demos (originally intended to be on Infinity). It's on the Christeen and 4 Demos EP, but that's splitting hairs.
Ok, so who's in? :millahhhhI probably am, even though my singing's not too great. But I'm going to sing in a choir next September, so I guess I should be able to do this as well, right? :D

You apologize for a double post, then you post again. :lolI am VERY aware of that. I wanted to edit my first post but then as soon as I apologized for the double post I clicked reply instead of edit thanks to listening to Devin's guide vocal tracks which for all intents and purposes, cause an unscheduled brainfart :lol
I'm sure he won't mind if he receives a crummy GarageBand recording from me recording vocals! :lol
If you can't sing, yelling is fine... Seriously, you don't have to be in tune, just heard. Go for it, everyone's invited
...laptop mic is fine.
the deadline is two weeks from today guys...have fun! dont stress about perfection, and the more the merrier!
feel free to scream your head off if you cant sing. =)
All submissions will be used. no worries.
Speaking of which, I think Z2's a harder song to sing for me personally to be honest.
Broken+Bones is one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard. EVER. My favourite, along with Moon and Mountaintop.
I'd rate Casualties 10/10
I would assume Open C, simply because Devin has said he can barely play in standard any more.
Nice ponytail.Thanks :P
I would assume Open C, simply because Devin has said he can barely play in standard any more.I would too, but im not sure... I also didn't notice many sounds below E.
For the most part, the songs are in Open C, but I've noodled around and found several riffs in standard as well.Which riffs are these?
Will leave this by here.

Doesn't even involve the finest bean...Of course not, that's still hidden.
Probably (like, 98.5% certain) seeing Devin in Berlin on the 7th of August!:tup
I IZ EXCITED
Oh they know where it is... they know.Maybe that's what Z2 is about...
Got a similar mail :D
Oh no! Was I that bad? I haven't received an email and I submitted over a week ago!
Devin Townsend @dvntownsend 3m
So hey! April 13, 2015... We're going to do a 'Ziltoid musical' at the Royal Albert Hall! ...indeeeed! :)
Holy shit I just got my bone-usb in and it's fucking incredible, I did not expect this! (I actually completely forgot I had gotten this) The actual item is pretty simple, still awesome, but the extras on the actual drive are super sexy secrets. It's got a bunch of pledge-exclusive tracks that I didn't know existed. Just for kicks and wondering of actual exclusivity, I searched the nets and googled galore'd and found nothing. So this is pretty boner-inducing for me. Pic of my bone:
Here's the tracks, for anyone interested, exactly as listed, and there's a document with this explanation from Devy (I'm gonna pretend he wrote it himself...which is entirely possible given the level of awesomeness of the man):
"The original sequence of the main Casualties album was to include 'GONE IS GONE' before Broken, but couldn’t because of the length limitations of a standard CD.
There are the following four songs, in a new sequence with crossfades and extra ambience etc that you can insert into media player to replace Forgive Me - Broken – Bones.
09) FORGIVE ME (Alternate Sequence)
10) GONE IS GONE (Alternate Sequence)
11) BROKEN (Alternate Sequence)
12) BONES (Alternate Sequence)
Enjoy!"
:omg: :metal
Then there are the two extras:
Cold Feet (Pledge Exclusive Demo Track) (3:39 track time)
THING (Pledge Exclusive Demo Track) (6:43 track time, feels like hyperbolic time chamber on acid)
CoC DISK 1 COMMENTARY (1:15:13 track time :eek )
I've heard the two new tracks once each but I need to meditate more. I haven't yet sat down with the commentary but I'm gonna do that later when I have time. Okay...I'm gonna do my best to explain these, and I assure you this isn't just the excitement but even upon first listen...these are two of my favorite Devy tracks, especially THING; both are so different and I can't imagine why they didn't make it onto the actual bonus disc but perhaps he'll make them available later for a compilation or new edition. They don't even sound like demos, they are very refined and have as many layers and turns as the songs on the album. Give me some more time with them and I'll come back with a play-by-play if anyone is interested. Oh yeah, it also came with a bunch of extremely huge, high-res images of different promo images of Devy and Che'. Some I've seen before but not at this quality, and there's a few I haven't seen. They are now my wallpapers because sexy.
there's also a commentary track for disc 2! it's great. he's more tired in that one though :P

That sure is news! Fucking epic!!!
Some of this stuff on the bonus disc of Casualties is pretty great. Okay, a lot of it is great. And the main disc continues to grow on me. This might end up being my favorite of Devin's mellow-ish albums (Ki, Ghost and Casualties).I listened to Casualties a lot when it first came out, then I guess I overplayed it and stopped listening. Now I'm back into it and I feel it's even better than I initially thought! Hard to say if I like it more than Ki, but definitely more than Ghost.

DTP and Animals as Leaders w/ Monuments North American tour just announced.
Also Z2/DTP album out October 27. (not sure if that was news, but it's news to me!)

Already calling it. Z2 AOTY.
I hope headlines in Albq. Unless him and Animals get the same set time. Cant wait to see what he plays.I'm pretty sure it's co-headlining, so set times will be the same, but band order will rotate every other night. At least, that's what's happened in the past. Personally, I hope AAL closes so I can leave a bit earlier if I want to. I don't mind them at all but it's kind of a long drive.

Watched DTP's Wacken 2014 show again. It's definitely one of the best concerts I've ever seen in both spectacle (he's made it more interesting than a Rush lightshow on acid with hardly any 'showy' aspects at all...just a video playing in the background) and musicianship. Some of the songs he plays, and at his age, sound absolutely amazing. Especially considering the fact that he was, as he said, up till 10AM (since who knows when) recording (presumably Z2 or the DTP Disc). He's a beast. A hilarious beast.Fully agreed. His voice was even better when I saw him on Tuesday. My neck is still aching.

Oh niiiiice! I just posted in the Discog thread and called it Z2 vs DTP. I like this much more. :lol That's super sexy. I love that much of Devy's material is all connected, and this is no different it seems. I wonder how it's connected to Dark Matters from Ghost? Or if it's just a thematic relation. Sky Blue just sounds like a perfect name to what seems to be the culmination of all the DTP's discog.
From what I understand it's one two-disc album.
From what I understand it's one two-disc album.
Gee, thanks for answering my simple question in a concise manner.
So...totally JUST found out that Bastard has two sections...Not One of My Better Days and The Girl From Blue City. That's awesome, I'm wondering if anyone knows where one ends and the next begins? I can make a pretty good guess given the tone and lyrics but I'd like to know if I'm anywhere close. Anyway it's a cool new aspect about one of my favorite songs of all the timelines.
I said fuck it and bought VIP that Animals linked to on Facebook.
I said fuck it and bought VIP that Animals linked to on Facebook.
I didn't even know that they would do a VIP. Ah, w/e.
Booklet says that "The lights from across the harbour" is the first line of the second part. I'd call 6:03 a bridge between the two parts, with the 2nd bit officially starting when the lyrics kick in.
Bought my ticket for the 12/6 show in NYC! I can finally breathe a sigh of relief... :metal

Nice!
Just went to purchase a ticket...and they are sold out :-(. Anyone know if there is going to be another batch sold?
I almost want him to take a break at this point. Otherwise he'd eventually be burned out completely.
You know what I'm gonna come clean. I think that CoC is incredibly BORING.

I'd say you can't go wrong with Ocean Machine or Terria.
listened to OM on blue vinyl for the first time tonight — sounds WAY better than the CD, even though that's probably the source. it's extremely well mastered for the medium and the splitting of "Hide Nowhere" and "Sister" was handled perfectly. That's cool. I'm really reluctant to buy Devin's albums on vinyl. Apart from Epicloud and a few others, Devin's albums to me are albums that I have to hear in one go without any pauses. Of course, the vinyls will probably sound a lot better, but I'd have to flip the vinyls all the time, which disrupts the flow for me.
gotta try Terria soon to see if they messed up any side splits... i have an irrational fear about this because of how many continuous albums get screwed up royally (including other Dev albums made by Back on Black/Plastichead).

Omg I just listened to Deep Peace after a long time. What a gorgeous song, absolute masterpiece. When I listen to it feels like all the bad things in the world disappear for a while.I love Deep Peace so much. It's my favourite Devin song, and a Top 10 song of all time for me. Whenever I hear that gorgeous solo and the build-up into that climax, I get shivers, and sometimes I just start crying at the beauty of it.
So, I listened those two albums you all recommended me, and I have to say that I like'em both, but Terria it just amazes me. Earth Day and Deep Peace are total eargasms :lolKnew you'd like them :tup Terria is amazing indeed, the highlights being Earth Day and Deep Peace as you said yourself.
And that only on my first listen.

And that only on my first listen.
It would just be nice if he played those songs in general.
I love the man to pieces, but one thing his live shows really suffer from (aside from way too many backing tracks) is that he's got SO many songs in his discography, but he only plays like, 10% of them live these days.
Also this is very offtopic but Sacul have you heard of Amaranthe? Pop-metal if anything. No, but if they're anything like Addicted, I'm in. An album?
:tup How did Terria sound
Listening to it on CD now by the way. I think it's one of the best sounding Devin albums on CD. Holy fuck, it still is absolutely brilliant.

“Hey all!
“So it’s been years I’ve been trying to get the energies in line to do another Ziltoid record, and it’s finally happened! Z2 is my new record, and it’s a multimedia event that has taken a ton of people a ton of effort to bring to you! It’s a double album, (one side DTP, and one side Ziltoid) and the concept expands on Ziltoid the alien, and his sci-fi adventures in a way that kind of throws back to 50′s radio plays… but obviously with complicated, heavy music as its soundtrack. It has taken a great deal of energy to put this all together, and the music is just one of the aspects of it. It’s a dream come true in a lot of ways, and I’m excited and honoured to be able to finalize the project with a live version of the entire record at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London on April 13th of next year! (!!) Basically what we did with The Retinal Circus a few years back will be taken to the next level with Z2 live.
“At the end of this process, we reached for the stars, and hopefully got to the moon, and after this album cycle, I will be taking some time to recharge my batteries and see what the next chapter holds. I hope you enjoy this record and all its offshoots, as one of my goals is to hopefully inspire folks to reach for unconventional ways to express themselves as well. We couldn’t have done it without you! See you at the show?”
“-Devin”

The digipak version of Z2 has been said to contain a bonus disc featuring the new Ziltoid album with all of the dialogue removed. Thoughts?
I really hope Dark Matters and Sky Blue get their own cover art.
much like how people took Epiclouder's "Devy suit of light (https://carlbegai.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Epicloud-2-e1349616683463.jpg)" artwork and used that as a cover.

Though I couldn't find a large version of it, so I had to photoshop it onto the original cover.
I mean, it's original official artwork. But it's not the cover. That was what I meant by even if we don't have a different cover for each disc, we'll more than likely be able to easily fashion one out of the artwork that'll no doubt be rampant throughout any special editions, booklets, etc.For some reason I thought devy's light

:lolI've heard them a few times, not nearly enough though, I suppose :lol
Mi'lady bought me the Contain Us boxset for my birthday a few days ago. I've been listening to the "Stuff That Was Almost Stuff" bonus cd. It's awesome. I'd already had Ho Krll and Radial Highway from the iTunes versions of Ghost and Decon, and listened to 'Watch You' a ton on youtube. The other songs are just great. 'Juno' in particular has been stuck in my head all week :metal .
Has anyone not heard these tracks yet?
:rollin Pee. Bwahaha. Indeedy, my lyric post was intentional. That would be awesome if it were the lyrics though, about as equally appropriate as hungering for god for some people. Beautiful line.
Contain Us is fucking awesome. I hadn't heard anything at all from the discs (unreleased songs-wise) and Ho Krll, Watch You, and Synchronicity Freaks blew my mind. Still some of my favorite tracks. For as much as I love Decon, the ending of Watch You is so damn groovy without having as much going on in the music as the beginning of Praise The Lowered. I like the end result of PTL, but Watch You's version is so much more fitting for the song, especially with the female vocals; they're hauntingly sexy.

OMFG give me this now
Seriously can't wait for this album. Just purchased tickets to Webster Hall on December 6th out of hype for this album.

Really loving the Sky Blue cover.Me too!
Eh, I like the official one more.
These pre-order options are fucking expensive.
37.99 pounds for the regular black vinyl? Fuuuuuuuuuuckin no way I can afford that.
$62 for that is not an alright value, on top of shipping that's still pretty damn pricey.Eh, I like the official one more.

It's 4LPs (2 discs for DTP, 2 discs for Ziltoid) as well as the double CD pack. And a frisbee thing. That's pretty alright value if you ask me.

If I can scrum up the money I'll probably preorder it, but what with Hyrule Warriors, Super Smash Bros 3ds, that new Lord of the Rings game, Revocation, other bands I'm forgetting, it's hard to peg down $62+ for one release, as badly as I want it. I might just get a digital copy and get a copy of the vinyl on Discogs down the road if it ever lowers in price.
What would be good to have in the CoC fanbox set? They were gonna add a wallet but, the logo didn't print good enough so they scrapped that and asked what we think would be good, and if they should do a poll.

Releasing a song from each record (Z2) in the next week. Easy stuff though, kind of safe choices to give you a taste. I'll keep you posted.

Well I actually do it for fun too. I don't have a fancy site or anything, just a regular blog. Century Media were very kind to give me a promo account. My advice is to start a blog like I did, build it up with a lot of reviews, and then ask them (or any label you want) for promos.I hate you because of your privilege :censored

(super seriously just joking. super jealous of you be cause I review albums for fun, but ongrats on being where you're at mang.
You said that you don't like Ziltoid 1 all that much (which happens to be among my favourite Devin albums, it's like a Futurama-Musical) but you really like Dark Matters.Same style, just executed better. Most of the Dark Matter songs clicked right away whereas a lot of Z1 still hasn't clicked with me.
Is it because DM is different from Z1 or because it's the same style just executed better.
Ki is such a beautiful record. Casualties and Ghost I usually have to be in the right mood to fully enjoy, but Ki works for me no matter the mood.
Also, I'm slightly miffed that I haven't been given a promo copy. Of all the people in the world who would promote (eg posting my fangasm reaction on every forum ever), I should be the one having my ears caressed by lovely lovely Z2.
For those who have heard it, what I'm most curious about is how Sky Blue differs in sound from his other albums.Yeah, it's just like it for the most part. Rain City sounds like something from Terria while Forever and The Ones Who Love have more of a Ghost vibe. Otherwise it's pretty much Epicloud Pt. 2
From what people have described it as, it just sounds like another Epicloud. Is that accurate?
Nope. In fact I didn't hear that on either album.
To anyone that has heard the albums, is this the chorus to Sky Blue? https://youtu.be/d3vLMBmdQNk?t=1m22s For some reason I feel it is.
Devin certainly condones it - read his tweet "You might be able to find a song from Sky Blue online if you look hard enough"Devy's always been really cool about this sort of stuff. Guy's just plain radular.
Ziltoidian Empire has leaked and Devin seems to have noticed.

Win a Skype Sesh with Dev.
I didn't like that one anywhere near as much as Universal Flame. It just seemed really directionless and had too much dialogue.
Apparently a radio station played a shitton of the album and if you go to the description in the Ziltoidian Empire video they have a link to the episode. I'm gonna stay away from it at the time being, though.
Just an FYI to everyone. www.ziltoid.com is now up and running. ZTV episode 1 is also there and it's fabulous. Thanks! That was epic!
And to anyone that participated in the Universal Choir, your name should be here: https://universalchoir.insideoutmusic.com/
...my work's been really slow and I've had a lot of time on my hands lately in anticipation for this album!
Is the third disc just Dark Matters without the talky bits or are there legit bonus tracks?
12 year old alert.
the part before Solar Winds kinda drags, I'd rather it get to the actual music. That's just me though.

The dialouge literally takes up roughly 50 seconds of a 10 minute song.

For the record I don't like the ambience there either, and I get the feeling it was only included for the dialogue. I like Dev's ambience generally but that bit bores me.

So I finally decided to drop about $38 and complete my collection of Devin Townsend albums (the important ones anyway).
I got Infinity, Infinity EP, Accelerated Evolution, and Synchestra, all of which I had never heard in full besides a few tracks here and there. from YouTube/ live performances.
I kind of regret buying Infinity and the EP. The combination of just really weird (not in a good way) songwriting and a bad production soundwise (imo) just really makes it hard to listen to. I will say that there are a few cool songs on here that I do like a lot: Christeen, Bad Devil, Ants, Unity, Man, Sit In The Mountain, and Noisy Pink Bubbles are all pretty great.
Accelerated Evolution is fucking awesome and Synchestra is HOLY FUCKING SHIT :metal :metal :metal :hefdaddy levels of incredibleness. Definitely one his best albums I think. Maybe I shouldn't praise it too much after just one listen, but wow. Top 5 album I think. Hopefully its not a "shrinker" after repeated listens.
On another note, Deathray lyric video on Gunshyassassin.com tomorrow!
Can you try to "explain" Deathday to us? Is it representative of Dark Matters? That one and From Sleep Awake are the odd songs out on Dark Matters. You're definitely right that it would have fit better on Sky Blue. It's a good song but it's somewhat weak compared to the rest of Dark Matters.
I'm somewhat negatively surprised, the songwriting feels wrong for Ziltoid. It's very poppy, more like something I would have expected on Sky Blue (sans the "evil" tonality).
I need this in my life.
Pls. nao.

Oh man, one of the track leaks I heard had Devin doing all the vocals, but now these samples have Anneke doing them.
I'm kind of dissapointed :-\

Universal Flame?
I hate that I seem to have to be "that guy", but I honestly don't think the new album is going to live up to its hype. The first couple spins will be great because of the halo effect (your favorite artists can do no wrong) but it lost its legs pretty fast for me. The story isn't as well crafted this time, and stretches to make references to the first album. This might be the most homogeneous of Devin's work in a long time, SYL not withstanding. I just don't get all the 9 and 10 reviews, other than people tend to overrate everything. I don't expect any of you to believe me, just like no one believed me when I tried to tell everyone that Kaleidoscope was going to be a step down for Transatlantic. This isn't bad, its just not "WOWSUPERAWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!YEAH!!!!!!!" as you would like to believe, particularly after 10+ spins.
I admit I haven't heard it yet except for Deathray, but thank you for keeping some grounded perspective here Dr. DTVT. I agree that all too often initial reviews are way too enthusiastic. DT12 being case in point. I like having more realistic expectations.

Yeah, Sky Blue's what I'm really looking forward to. If the Ziltoid albums was full of tracks in the vein of Hyperdrive and Solar Winds, I'd be all over that shit. Those are the only two songs I listen to from that album anymore.
It's Devin. It will be great. This is the guy who relesed Deconstruction and Ghost on the same day. And they are both flawless.

Ehhhhhhhh... sure? We'll have to agree to disagree, I guess. ;)
(I like PtL, Stand, and TMM, but the rest of Decon is a bit... much for me. And Ghost does nothing for me at all.)
I love Ghost up until Monsoon, then the ambience and atmosphere kind of wears of for me. Genius guy, amazingly eclectic songwriter, but again, just the sheer MASS and length of material and how often he's been releasing is kind of killing it for me.
I'm afraid the the "final" version will be the same just with dynamic compression cranked to eleven, to make it sound like Epicloud.
I'm no audiophile either, but I think Epicloud sounds noticeably worse than a bunch of his other albums.
The main problem was the drum sound and the sheer amount of low end. If you listen to the very beginning of Kingdom the whole thing sounds distorted because of how much bass there is.
I still think Epicloud sounds great. It was deliberately mixed so that you could crank it.I don't like mixes like these. You end up losing a lot of power when playing it at a lower volume and/or it ends up sounding muddy. A great mix should have the same impact at any volume. My goto for a great metal mix is Painkiller by Judas Priest. It kicks your ass when played loud, but it still sounds crystal clear and very powerful when played quietly.
Dark Matters sounds incredible to me.
Sky Blue also sounds pretty good overall but I think a few songs could use some work being kind of distorted sounding at times.
Then again, the leak I have is only 128kb quality, I think. Or 256kb.
Either way, the final CD version (which I have preordered from cmdistro) will sound way more clear and complete, I'm sure. I just hope he doesnt ruin the mix, because the high-end sounds awesome and the drums are a shining quality throughout Z2.
I can even hear the bass guitar on "Warrior" :o
Does anybody know if there's any non-live versions (demo, whathaveyou) of Supercrush where it's just Devy handling the vocals. Nothing against Anneke, but when Devy sings it live, he makes that song go from perfect to Supreme Ultra Perfect.

I like Anneke's soft vocals. It adds that big dynamic between verse and chorus.I always liked Anneke's parts more when she's there to accent the song, don't get me wrong, she has a fantastic voice; but Devy has an amazing voice, and it's a shame that sometimes we get songs that he sings live that are hands down better than the studio version with another singer(IMO)

Dark Matters is a different story. The new version is dull and lifeless, as if the goal was to make it as close to Epicloud as possible. Just listen to the new version of Dimension Z, the beautiful choir has been de-beautified. The music has lost most of it's soundscape and sounds narrow. Thank god for the leaked promo version, I'll keep listening to that.

If that's the case that's extremely disappointing...
I liked Casualties of Cool quite a bit, but Ziltoid is probably my least favorite Devin album, and I can't stand his Space Opera Metal with goofy voices and fart sounds. I know some people really love him when he does that, but it's not really my thing. And on top of that it's a 2 hour album. I don't know if I could sit through that. :(

The fact he's done this is pretty incredible to me, the man caters to fans like no other. That said, I think this version is for you; it essentially turns it into a 'normal-produced' DTP album and Devy's stated that he recently listened to it and the experience is totally different.

I'd rather have a third disc that contains Dark Matters mixed like the review version. The final mix takes a lot of life out of the music, it sounds a lot like Epicloud and Sky Blue now.
Good god, Dark Matters so thoroughly curbstombs the original Ziltoid. It's insane.

I must have some weird ears, cause I really don't hear much of anything you've described in this 'new' leak, Prog and Me7. It just sounds crisper and cleaner (a bit louder in some instances...but not 'loudness war' loud, for clarification) to me. I can definitely hear some fluctuations in the levels of certain instruments and/or vocals but they just sound adjusted to me, I can still hear everything fine, but some things are now more prominent. I also really love the final version of Fallout but I'm definitely keeping the original. Either way, I suppose I'm in the minority considering I have absolutely no problem with the way Epicloud sounds either. The final product (well...I'll have to wait till my order comes in to say for sure I suppose) is superior and the definitive edition, in my earholes.
I'm loving this shit so much more than I initially did though. I can't stop playing March of the Poozers, which sounds much bigger than the old production. Sky Blue sounds infinitely better, especially the song itself; everything just pops out much more to me (especially that groovy dance-like sound during the chorus) (All this to say, I can't find any version above 200k for the old version so of course it sounds inferior no matter what...to me at least; which is a shame cause I'd love a version of old Fallout that is of the same quality as the final version)
Also, I can't pick out the Ho Krll beat! Share your secrets, Prog!

I heard Sky Blue (the song) today. I don't really understand what people are disliking about SB, if this song is representative of the album. I've already listened to it about two dozen times.
I'm really digging both albums. Sky Blue might be a little safe but I think it's still very good. Universal Flame, Midnight Sun, Sky Blue, and Silent Militia are all excellent. The rest? Well, I need to listen some more.
I pre-ordered it back in September. Got an email saying it shipped last week. Should be arriving any day now
there seems to be a real rarity to a single singer getting to carry a song on these records — which isn't to knock the sound of the huge group vocals, but more to say they overwhelm almost continuously (especially on Dark Matters), which makes it tough to differentiate anything. for instance, once the band kicks in during "Z2," it's just a constant balls-to-the-wall vocal (and narration) assault until part of "Warrior Princess" breaks it up. the flow is great, but it's a wall of the same thing, whereas Dev is usually much better at creating differentiation — like he did on the first Ziltoid! he may as well have made "Z2," "From Sleep Awake" and "Ziltoidian Empire" one track.
Bought the 3-disc for the hell of it, ripping into iTunes now. I don't suppose anyone has any decent scans of the two album covers? I found a decent one of Sky Blue that has a few jpeg artifacts on Google, but it'll do. I can't find a good one of Dark Matters anywhere.
J
Dark Matters has lots of awesome moments, but man the narration is waaaaaay too ubiquitous. Unlike Z1, it interrupts the music way too often and it's just kind of annoying and it's just not funny. The narration-less version is so much better, almost like a different album. War Princess, Deathray, March of the Poozers, and Ziltoid Goes Home are my favorites. Unfortunately, Earth is really repetitive. It might be my least favorite on the two albums.
