Let's Go Crazy is outstanding.  I've always wanted to learn it and open a show with it.

The whole Purple Rain album is excellent.  Stuff like The Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue, the deep cuts - just great stuff.  LGC is just a balls-out good time, capped with a great example of Prince's under-ratedness as a guitarist.

loved his solo on While my Guitar Gently Weeps from the 2004 Rock and Roll hall of fame

Debbie Gibson - Lost in Your Eyes

I humbly admit that not only was I a big fan of this song when it came out (not so much now), but I had the Electric Youth album on vinyl...and enjoyed all of it.  Flame away! :lol

Yeah, I had the cassette single.  I also had Tiffany's single at the same time, so...yeah.  This falls squarely into the "did not age well" category.  In fact, I think it fell squarely into that category within about two weeks after coming out, along with I Think We're Alone Now, Cars With The Boom, etc.  Erm...or so I've heard, you know, from people who had those songs.

Did you know that "I Think We're Alone Now" was a cover song?  It was a top 10 hit for Tommy James and the Shondells in the 60s.

Van Halen - Panama

Great song; great video. Play this at a bar on the jukebox or by a live band and everyone will inevitably yell, "Panama!" during the chorus.  A classic in every way possible. :metal

Incredibly catchy, energetic song.  Looking back, I'm not sure how they got away with the monologue part on a song that got so much MTV and public radio play, but whatever.  :lol

One of my favourite VH songs, and the music video really captured the fun of the band. :lol The drum sound on that song/album really gave it so much kick and energy.

This is the one song I skip when it's on my I-pod.  Not that it's a bad song at all, I just heard it and saw it on MTV so many times that I got sick of it.

Awesome song and video! Always wonder what kind of material the band would've released during the rest of the 80s and 90s if they never had broken up after this album.

That is hard to speculate on, cause EVH was already going in a slightly different direction, a direction Roth didn't like (more keyboards), so given that, it is doubtful the two would have co-existed much longer under those circumstances.  At the time, the shock was probably a shock to most (I was too young to grasp it at the time), but in retrospect, it happened at just the right time, for both sides.

When in Rome - The Promise

This song was never really on my radar when it came out in 1988, but when I got one of those 80s compilation CDs years later, it was on there, and I was like, "Oh yeah; not a bad song."  The appeal is more than obvious: memorable melodies combined with some crazy dance rhythms.

Duran Duran - Save a Prayer

This is actually my favorite of the three hits from Rio; always loved this song.  The keyboard work is this song is so freaking cool, it almost sounds like keyboard work that would have been done in a song by  band that first hit it big in the 70s, if that makes sense.  The extended outro, which is killer, just caps off a great song.

Great song!  The programmed keyboard line helps make it, but Duran Duran's unique harmonies are what seal the deal for me.  It's wacky at the end when Nick slowly increases the portamento rate on the programmed synth, past the point where it can get to the next note in time, resulting in a pretty bizarre almost-melody.

Heard this song first on Arena, so hearing the album version through me off. Came to love them both, and one of the few songs of theirs I can't imagine getting to a point where I wouldn't like it.

Julian Lennon - Too Late for Goodbyes

This is another song I hadn't heard in decades and had completely forgotten about, and then I saw the video the other day and was like, "Oh yeah, I remember that!"  I think I liked it at the time, although it wasn't a favorite.  I think I probably thought it was cool since it was by John Lennon's kid.  Revisiting it now, it is catchy enough, and I'll probably spend a buck to get it and add it to my 80s playlist.

His early stuff while catchy were ok.  His later music is much better.

When Julian started hitting the airwaves, of course everyone compared him to his late father, and remarked on how much he sounded like John.  Me, I just wondered how much of it was natural, and how much his voice was processed to make it sound that way.

I liked this one better than "Gavotte", because it was upbeat and kinda catchy, but overall his stuff didn't excite.

Screw y'all, I LOVE this song - always have, always will.  Couldn't care less if it's too "poppy" or whatever. :heart :heart :heart

John Lennon - Nobody Told Me

Released four years after his death, this song got heavy rotation on MTV (the video including older clips of Lennon and Yoko Ono), and I enjoyed it a lot.  I still like it, even if it is not a song I listen to much at all.  But whenever I do hear it, I still enjoy it.

It's alright and fairly enjoyable. I enjoy it more than "Woman" and "Borrowed Time", but not as much as "Starting Over" or "Watching the Wheels"

So says you - his first album, IMO, was one of the better things to come out of 80s pop.  It's aged quite well too, unlike a lot of the Purple Rain soundtrack (for one example).  But, you know... opinions and all that... :)

Night Ranger - The Secret of My Success

I have to admit that I am a sucker for not only this song, but the movie of the same name.  I remember watching movies like The Secret of My Success, Dragnet and Summer School to death back in 1987, and I will always enjoy all of them to the fullest, since they remind me of that specific period of my life.  Hooray for nostalgia!! But getting back to the song, it wasn't that big of a hit, and I suspect some won't remember it, but I still think it is a well-written song.  It's rather different than most of their other hits (thanks to the emphasis on horns), but so what? :)
