I gave Iconoclast another try this week after almost a year of not listening to it. I'm glad I picked it up back then, since it introduced me to the band (just ordered TDWOT btw :caffeine:), and although I loved it initially, overall the album hasn't aged really well. Apart from the title track, which I still enjoy a lot, most of the songs are pretty weak and seem uninspired.
And of course, how ridiculous is it to release two versions of the album, one only containing half the material (I have the version  with only one CD)? I know it wasn't the bands's decision, but fuck NB. Seriously.

I liked Iconoclast when it was new, but since then I've started to like it a lot less. I feel like all the best things about it are not only on Paradise Lost, but done better on that album.

Any news on if/when they'll be heading back to the studio for another album?

So about the same time frame as when you figure out your mystery song.

Would love to see new material from Symphony X; but still think that they are long overdue for a live cd/dvd.

Last I heard was that Jason Rullo was taken to the hospital for some kind of heart problem and I don't think he could play for several month after that. 2014 sounds like a reasonable aim.

2014, that's very soon! I hope it's true, because otherwise I'm not expecting another album before 2016. Would be great to see them pick up the pace again.

If they're going to make more albums like Iconoclast I don't think I'm interested.  If they bring back the more melodic/neoclassical style of their earlier material, I'll be all over it.

Totally agree kirk, less chugga-chugga and more "When All is Lost" and we're back in business.

I agree, although I love Paradise Lost. Iconoclast is like PL 2 only with lame songwriting, boring riffs, non-existent vocal melodies, exceptionally bad vocals for Symphony X standards (they're not bad, but Russ can do so much better), no emotion at all, no variety (except for WAIL) andRomeo being even more dominant in the mix :-\

The thing that really bums me out is the first few albums have absolutely putrid guitar tone, but the songwriting and especially the vocals are awesome.  Starting with, to some extent, "The Odyssey" and then moving on to "Paradise Lost" and especially "Iconoclast" they improved the overall sound/tone of the guitar in a big way, but the vocals sound like someone gargling with sand and glass and the songs (especially the riffs) sound like stuff that tons of generic metal bands are doing.  I mean, don't get me wrong - Romeo is a monster player.  And SOME of the riffs are killer, but it's all chug, all the time and after about three or four tracks it just starts to sound like one big long song all mashed together.

I really respect the band and their decision to go in the more metal direction, but it's unfortunately not my cup of tea. So if they returned to their neoclassical style, I'd be much more ecstatic about the upcoming material.

Being a newer fan of SymX, i actually like the last two albums better, with the "more metal direction".  I do like the older stuff, but Paradise Lost and Iconoclast are, overall, my two favorite albums by the band.

Even more important than the style is the production. Iconoclast was overcompressed to 11, I think many fans would appreciate it more if the aggression had some real "kick" behind it (and the vocals were less monotonous).
It's laughable when a band pushes for a lot of aggression but negates it by compressing the dynamic "energy" out of the album. Stylistic diversion is usually a good thing IMO (even though I still prefer New Mythology Suite over any album they made afterwards).

This. I'm into Symphony X for the ultra cheesy combination of classical music and metal, as showcased on TDWOT and V. The Odyssey still had some good stuff, but they kind of lost me after that.

After a couple of days of listening to TDWOT, my rankings of the albums I have look like this:

1. The Odyssey
2. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
3. Paradise Lost
4. V
5. Iconoclast
