Of ALL DT album openers, which is the best?
« on: June 29, 2011, 06:09:49 PM »
I thought it would be okay to make this thread in spite of emin's (sorry dude) since his poll consisted of only the two most recent openers.  So vote for the best them!  WHO POOP RAST!?

I'm personally partial to 6:00.

I voted TGP, but it really depends.  Judging them as individual songs, Glass Prison is my favorite first track; judging them as openers that set the tone for their albums... ITPOE or As I Am.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

I'm surprised at how little love PMU is getting.  I thought I&W was their Holy Grail?

It is, but from what I've seen, PMU is often considered one of that album's weakest tracks.  I like it, myself, just not as much as TGP.

Tie between As I am and TGP but as I am is a little more focused TGP definitely has the best intro.

It's one of if not the weakest track though.

As a song not many are in TGP's league, although ITPOE pt.1 is a great kick in the face opener as well.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too early to even consider OTBOA in a poll like this.

TGP is my vote.

Edit: What I mean is, to me, the album opener is a double-sided sword. You can judge it of its own entity, and how it sets the tone for the album. PMU works well setting the tone, although on its own, I think it is an average song.

Why not?  Maybe we can't judge it in the context of the album, but the song is available to listen to, so we can judge it on its own merits.

ITPOE. This song has it all.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I'm not going to state opinion as fact (e.g. saying 'xyz is the weakest track', as if it's set in stone). I really like PMU, takes the cake just ahead of TGP and TROAE. Maybe PMU is getting hated because it's perhaps DT's most popular track outside their established fanbase?

Me thinks it's too early to consider the new tune for the list.  So, I stick with Glass Prison, then 6:00.  Now....do this again in 6 months and we might have a different answer ;)

hi :heart
Of course Dream Theater isn't that good. Good music is obviously about 3 minute pop songs and catchy hooks.
Dream Theater aren't that good. Neither was Beethoven, or Mozart, or Bach. Pfft, 20 minute epics. Who needs that?

Well, usually on forums when people say it like that, it's implied that they are stating their opinion only. Very rarely do people actually try to push their opinions as fact, though they do happen due to the large amounts of arogant buttheads on the internet.

I've never been a fan of PMU... just a generic good metal song to me.  Honestly, I can go the rest of my DT shows without seeing it.

Should I have written in Regression/Overture 1928 instead?  I suppose they probably go together, despite Regression being the first track.

Eh, maybe.  If you want the poll to be honest, Regression should be alone.  But not many are actually likely to pick Regression by itself, so if you want the poll to be 'even', then yeah, Overture should probably be included.  *shrug*  Personally, I'd only pick it if Strange Deja Vu was also included.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

I've seen too much of these chaps on the interwebz. Thus, I try to include an IMO in post when conveying my opinion.

On a thread I made recently, that's what I did. Put the 2 together

I really like The Root of All Evil. I like all the others as well, of course, but i like the mixture of a really cool riff, a melodic yet powerful chorus, and the instrumental sections. I also like that it begins with the rythm section from This Dying Soul, just the drums.

Its not the best song....actually its not even a song, but I went for Regression.
Reason - I'm still recovering from the buzz of anticipation it filled my body with.

Regression...It's like the prologue to a story, it sets the scene for the rest of the album.
