I love this vid where Ihsahn explains the subtleties of some old Emperor riffs.  IMO, these subtle ideas really distinguish Emperor from a band like Immortal or CoF.  As he says: It's all in the execution.   Also love the part where he says "keep it chaotic", lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1vlNCWQ6HU

I don't even know who this man or Emperor are, but that video was pretty cool.

But I love Ihsahn. I have angL as well as In The Nightside Eclipse and Prometheus.

Wow, lot's of Agalloch love in this thread. When I signed up 1.5 years ago, I barely heard a mention of them  :loser:
I just read the wikipedia article about The Mantle and when I saw the cover, my first reaction was: "WTF they took Portrucci's avatar!" :lol

Best black metal album evar.  (Negura Bunget's Om)

If you consider Agalloch BM, then AAtG is the best black metal album evar.

Listened to AATG today.  There were a few too many same-sounding post-rock moments on the first two songs, but after "The White Mountain Upon Which You Will Die," it got awesome.

I tried Dimmu Borgir but didn't like them. I listen to Agalloch from time to time.

Aren't Orchid and Morningrise by Opeth black metal albums?

Only in influence and some style. But not entirely.

Age of Silence, Solefald, <code>, Arcturus, Peccatum... to be honest I think these would fall under avant-garde and notsomuch black with the exception of <code>, huh.  Please feel free to tell me I'm wrong/right - I have a hard time with genre.

Early Opeth is influenced a bit by some 1st Wave bands like Celtic Frost and the like, so it gives off that impression. But no, I wouldn't call them Black Metal at all.

Ashes Against the Grain is for me the best combination of black metal, neo-folk, post-rock and ambient/noise.
It's a perfect album from start to finish, and one of my all time favorites.

I wouldn't really say that Agalloch is entirely black metal. They're mostly folk metal with other influences.

Oh, and Cradle of Filth is pretty good. I need to listen to more Black Metal, though.

I think the only black metal I have is Watain.  I heard one song that was on a sampler CD from their record company at a heavy metal music store in Providence, RI; and after having an awesome discussion with the owner, I felt like I had to buy something so I asked what he was playing.  The album itself made me think I wasn't really ready for black metal, but it definately had its moments.  Lawless Blackness was the name of the album, worth checking out.

I've got recs if you want them.

I've heard mixed things about Watain, so I haven't really checked them out.

Behemoth is mostly Blackened Death (Black Metal/Death Metal fusion genre) so they do sorta count. I've never been a fan of them though. Haven't checked out Old Man's Child though.

I won't deny that Varg is an insanely huge douche (For obvious reasons), but I really love how the synths interact with the main riff in Dot Som Engang Var. Gives off a really unsettling atmosphere.

Back in '06 I was way into black metal.  Nowadays I just listen to a bit now and then.

This is about all I find myself listening to nowadays

Emperor
Burzum
Immortal
Dimmu Borgir (mostly older stuff)

There was a lot of stuff I used to listen to... but can't really listen to anymore.

Never heard of them, but I'm always looking for more good black metal. What are they like? 1st wave? 2nd wave? Post-black?

The album is Paracletus, the band is Deathspell Omega. They're really technical, atonal dissonant black metal.

Any Primordial fans here? Recently got into them and I love 'em. They're an odd mix of Black Metal and Irish folk.

More like Cradle of LOL's. Never cared for them, at all.

Anyway, two weeks ago I ended up seeing Enslaved and Dimmu Borgir. The trve kvlt black metal fans can say whateverthefuck they want, but Dimmu Borgir is still a fucking solid band, and puts on a hell of a show.

In fact, I picked up a Dimmu Borgir album today, Enthone Darkness Triumphant. I fuckin love this CD, especially Spellbound (By the Devil). Very good stuff. Oh also, I picked up Naglfar's album Pariah. Another damn good black metal album.

Saw this Taiwanese band Chthonic open for Arch Enemy last week, I quite liked them. Bassist is rather hot too.

Get it, I personally haven't heard any of the stuff from it. But I've heard most Fas stuff (their 2007 album) - many consider that one their best effort yet, but since Paracletus is out now, I've heard many people on the net praise it that it's as good as Fas or even better than it.

"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges
