Saw this Taiwanese band Chthonic open for Arch Enemy last week, I quite liked them. Bassist is rather hot too.

Chthonic are really cool. Nice use of that erhu instrument too.

Might go see them on March 16th, they're playing a pretty cheap gig in Camden.

On another note though, I just saw that Enslaved is playing with NEGURA BUNGET at the same venue in April :caffeine:

I saw Enslaved play with Dimmu Borgir last November, it as a fucking sweet show. They are much better live than I originally expected, and I had some high expectations to begin with.

I'm still getting my feet wet in blak metal, but I'm really digging Enslaved's two most recent albums.

Well, tbh I'm not all that interested in Enslaved, I'm mainly psyched for Negura Bunget  :lol

I saw them open for Opeth a few years back though, they were decent.

Ah :lol

The thing about Enslaved is they have three major periods in their music. The black metal with progressive elements here and there, the viking-esque black metal and the now mostly dominant progressive black metal. And the progressive stuff gives them a very Opeth like style.

Either way, they put on a cool show.

I dig Symphonic Black Metal. Dimmu Borgir comes to mind. Abigail Williams as well. And Artep. But I think that's about it.

I agree with you man... Symphonic black metal takes the cake for me.  The Dimmu Borgir record is immensely epic!

I have on Borknagar album which I enjoy, as well as a couple albums from this new Black-Shoegaze scene, which I love. But the tr00 black metal fans always laugh at me.

I would like to get into the genre, but I want to stay as far away as possible from the NSBM crap. The odd thing is, every person I've mentioned this to has jumped down my throat and insulted me about it, like it's even wrong to ask why, say, Darkthrone, let someone like Varg on their album if they're against him.

The Black Metal community just seems to be overall really harsh and strict, which I don't find cool at all. Unfortunately no one has ever been able to change my mind about this.

Though maybe the extreme death community is worse... hmm....

So hold on, what kind of black metal are you open to or willing to try out? Because I could give you a few suggestions if you'd like.

I'm looking for stuff that is pretty rooted in traditional metal, or with a symphonic edge, but nothing that's got anything to do with National Socialism or church burnings. Also I know production standards aren't especially important for black metal but I'd prefer that the the harshes are at least decent. There doesn't have to be any clean vocals but I always find it helps when they suit the music well.

I also really like this Black Shoegaze stuff, so more of that is good. I only have Alcest and Les Descretes as of now.

Well, starting with symphonic, check out Dimmu Borgir's Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (easily one of my favourite black metal albums). As for something a bit more traditional...hm...when someone refers to that I assume like old school "heavy metal", and the first thing that comes to mind is Venom.

As for something I just want to recommend, Enslaved's album Frost is another all time favourite black metal album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pW_mDX520Y - This is what you'd be up against in terms of production quality for Frost, which I think is one of the albums strongest points, honestly.

Oh man, I totally forgot that was in Brutal Legend. Yeah, if you liked what you heard, I'm sure you will like the rest of the album. It's damn good and has a great atmosphere to it. Glad I could help.

Do people generally consider Immortal's "Sons of Northern Darkness" or "At the Heart of Winter" to be black metal? I've heard/read people describe them as "blackened thrash metal" but I don't really have enough knowledge on the subject.

As far as my knowledge of black metal goes, Immortal are very much black metal and always have been.

That was impressive.  Must check out.  The use of the erhu is fan-fucking-tastic.   :metal

So I've always liked some black metal, but I've never listened to a band strictly of that genre. Anyone want to give me a recommendation?

I agree, wholeheartedly. When I saw them on Dimmu's Darkness Reborn tour in North America Enslaved were on the bill but I did not think too much of them before the concert. Then I heard them live and I want to pick up an album, just not sure which one.

So I've always liked some black metal, but I've never listened to a band strictly of that genre. Anyone want to give me a recommendation?

I recommend anything you have read here. You can't really miss...cept for Cradle of Filth. They're just heavy metal. They don't know it yet.
