73 minutes.
Not 74?  Or do you not want it to be longer than The Whirlwind?

Good idea, I'm actually gonna go for 78 minutes.  One track, nothing split up, 1 track cd, in the vein of Edge of Sanity and Green Carnation.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Oh yeah.  And I dunno why I said 74 minutes...for some reason my mind told me that The Whirldwind was 73:56.

Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I want the next album to have about 7-9 songs, while most of the songs will be ~8 minutes, and one song will be 13-17 minutes. Basically something like IaW combined with the demo version of ACoS length wise...some songs in SC/BCSL were just too long at times, I'd personally like to see DT taking a hiatus from that kind of writing.

I would like DT's next "epic" song to be as long or short as it needs to be, with music written to enhance the emotion of the tune, rather than be long for the sake of being "long."

"Long" songs are great when they don't use "Metropolis Pt. 1" as a template (and I love Met, I just think that shouldn't be the template for songs by DT). Stay within the flow of the song and let the song dictate when it should end.

please remeber that this question doesnt concern the quality of the songs writing. just look at it as a good song. not bad, not amazing.

I could just say however long they want it to be as long as it's quality, since it's true. But it doesn't contribute much to discussion.

Honestly I've been blown away by all the 20 minute songs so I wouldn't mind at all if there was another one of the same quality. And of my top 20 songs, maybe 2 of them are under 10 minutes, so I'd be disappointed if there weren't at least some songs in the 10-15 minute range.

But if they aren't long but are still good, then it won't matter.

I'm probably gonna get hammered for this, but I'd like to see a DT epic longer than 8VM and ITPOE, but shorter than Six Degrees. Around 30-35 minutes, like 'A Flash Before My Eyes' by Spock's Beard.

Why would you get hammered for that?

I'd like a 6-8 minute epic along the lines of Under A Glass Moon or Fatal Tragedy... all killer, no filler.  Too many stereotypical epics contain long breaks or intros/outros with nothing but ambient sounds that I usually fastforward through.

I'd give my left leg for a one-track album. (Something that would beat up the Whirlwind and steal it's wallet.)

I seriously doubt DT would consider this though. meh.

Probably because it's a dumb idea.

yea at least Transatlantic split it up into separate tracks

One reason i havent gotten The Flower Kings - "Flower Power" is because i dont want to sit through a 59:25 first track. And do it at least a few times until im familiar with the tune. PLUS there's 10+ more tracks after it  :o

Splitting up into tracks is definitely the way to go. I usually get lost in the middle of some of those gigantic tracks to the point where it's "Oh where are we? Oh 18 minutes into a 30 minute track. 12 more long ass minutes to go". I find a lot of the times those particular songs vary so much that the sections don't even really sound like they belong together so it's easier to chop it up into more digestible sections.

Something unique in the vein of Octavarium.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I'd be fine with no epic. Just a bunch of good songs. Epics are supposed to be special, not common place.

I'd like a Lines In The Sand/Scarred type of epic. Not another 20 minutes song.

lol what chance have they got when the forum wants completely different things from an album. Never Enough indeed.
As far as I'm concerned I just want a great DT album with a nod to the best of their past and something new and awesome. With unneccesary instrumental wankery. I don't think that's too much to ask...
It's not that long ago that I thought there wouldn't be another DT album.

Why would you get hammered for that?

Because quite a few here don't want a 20+ minute epic, and I'm suggesting a 30+ minute epic.

Ah, what the hell.  I'll say somewhere between 24 and 42 mins.  They'll call it 2442. :p

I'm hoping for an album like Octavarium or Systematic Chaos.  Not quality-wise, but structure-wise.  A bunch of shorter songs, with one beast, and one mini-beast.

This.

Once bands (DT and others) go past the 20 minute mark, they have a hard time keeping the song together.  For example, I consider the first couple of parts of ACOS some of the best stuff they've ever written, but the rest of the song is so disorganized that it takes the solid closer to make me finally remember why I almost love the song.  6 Degrees is decent in and of itself, but it's not so much a single track as it is 8 separate tracks thrown together with a broad musical and lyrical theme tying them together.  Octavarium is probably the one true barn burner that I can honestly say I enjoy from start to finish, but even that could have used a bit of paring down, most notably in the too-long Floydian opening.

With that being said, DT usually excels at the 12-15 minute mark, with true works of beauty such as Home, Trial of Tears, in the Name of God and Learning to Live.  Sometime they do well beyond it, with Count of Tuscany being a prime example, but for the most part, I'd like to see them scale back on their epics for a couple of albums and offer more shorter, but still quality songs.

Because I like my epics natural and not forced and uninspired, I'd prefer an epic with a 10 min intro of wind sounds, seagulls, frogs, dogs, etc. That is really cool, and people dig that.

I don't really care for epics, but if i had to say something.. maybe a 13-14 minute song, with the rest being under 10 minutes.

As I used to tell Ex Wife#1, lenght is not an issue. Dynamics are.

20 minutes flowing through dynamic passages fly like a beauty, 10 minutes in full tilt feels like watching grass growing.

I was blowing leaves saturday and listening to The Whirlwind live and 30 minutes into it, I bumped my I pod and it stated the song over.  So I like splitting up the tracks also.

As long as it's a good song the length doesn't really matter, though I'm hoping they will continue writing songs longer than 20 minutes. Dream Theater's longer songs tend to end up among my favourites.
