He was at the Cruise To the Edge performance, as well as Ted leonard.  :)

Quote from: DT05 on August 11, 2024, 05:08:15 AMI think about this song quite a bit, and how it feels simultaneously satisfying to end the suite yet also a bit sad in thinking about how it's the only song that doesn't try to introduce as many new melodies and moments. Of course there's reprise to the previous songs in all entries, but this one feels majority reprise, where usually DT suites don't do this as much. Thinking about A Mind Beside Itself and how each song has its own atmosphere, then seeing how this one is like a buffet of the first four songs, I will say that I still wish this song was just a bit different. But, I like it.
I agree with this assessment. I do wish there had been more "original" content in the final piece as well, but it is cool to see how they rearranged and reincorporated various ideas from the other 4 parts into this song.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Quote from: crystalstars17 on August 11, 2024, 09:48:12 AMI like The Root of All Evil.

The other four could fall into a black hole for all that I care. They do absolutely nothing for me.
Agreed, except I couldn't live without the keyboard solo in TSF

Quote from: Evermind on March 30, 2025, 10:35:41 AMI'm gonna send 1) stuff that's too heavy 2) stuff that's too proggy 3) singers that sound like Freddie Mercury. Hope that sounds good.

I assumed he meant in the small tour he did with Haken and Eric Gillette. No specific mention of the cruise.

I mean, obviously you feel what you feel.  I would just say that in relation to the bolded section, I don't feel there are enough DT suites to say how they USUALLY do it.  I don't think they have a long history of suites where they established how they usually do it, then veered in a different direction with this one.

Having said that, while there are clearly many, many reprises of prior material in this song, there is also some original stuff (though it is definitely outnumbered by the other reprises).
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

That's very true. A Mind Beside Itself and 6DOIT disc 2 (not really a 'suite' but you know what I mean), plus songs broken up into twos such as ITPOE. Honestly though that one post in this thread talking about how the heavy reprisal signifies the reflection at the end of the steps, that has been more transformative towards my view towards this song than anything.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)
