There are a ton of great musical moments over the last 12 years from live performances, to clinics, recorded material, the documentaries, etc. If you enjoyed the MM-era, do you have any favorites?

My top 3:

1. Breaking the Fourth Wall DVD: this is my favorite live performance from the band.
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Awesome playthrough videos that furthered my appreciation the drums of how a drummer can totally change the sound of a band. The Alien and The Enemy Inside playthroughs, where he is just absolutely crushing it, are some of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDTYWwqchhQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFx19PMxGTc

I'm going to stick to recorded material as it's what I'm most familiar with. That still leave me with many moments to chose from, so I may be overlooking some.

1. The big drum fill in Illumination Theory leading into the second movement.
2. S2N. Pretty much the whole thing really.
3. The drum solo in the instrumental section of Pale Blue Dot.

And honorable mention to the ending of Three Days. I was not expecting a blast beat there  :lol

When Portnoy left, honestly, Mangini was the first person I thought of. When I found out he was in the audition process, I knew he would be the one. Even before watching him play with the band I couldn't imagine anyone else getting the job. The one time I met him on the Distance Over Time tour I told him "thank you for being in this band." He thanked me and was genuinely taken aback and very appreciative.  He has no ego, and that's kind of the way he plays. While I don't always agree with his musical choices, he's playing in a way that he thinks best serves the musicians around him. And with that, these are my favorite moments of the Mangini era.

1. 'The Spirit Carries On' drummer audition documentary. - I loved the insight we got and this really got me excited in the band in a way I hadn't been in a few years.
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events - I loved this album when it was released, and I thought it was such a return to form. It's still one of my favorites ever.
3. Watching Live at Luna Park in the cinema. That was quite the experience that I thought would never happen!
4. 'The Along for the Ride Tour' - playing the second half of Awake seemed so odd at the time. But then seeing it, it worked perfectly.
5. The 'Images and Words 25th Anniversary Tour' and the 'Distance Over Time Tour'. Playing Images and SFAM in their entirety was breathtaking. Mangini honored those parts while putting his own spin on some things, I don't think he could have done a better job.

That is awesome. The same thing happened to me when I met him for the first time. It was right after ADTOE and the entire band was doing a meet and greet. I told him something like 'I am so excited you are in this band' and similar to your experience he seemed genuinely taken aback and incredibly thankful. He is a class act and I hope he finds a good long term gig if that is what he wants.

I don't know about top three but I love this playful moment before The Silent Man at the Rio stop of the 2012 tour  :) :heart

Reminds me of when he sang something in Austin at the last stop of the official AVFTTOTW tour.

It was hilarious seeing it happen live. All the whole JM was just fiddling on his bass. 😆

Dream Team

1. Breaking the Fourth Wall
2. Luna Park
3. His performance in Illumination Theory

Sorry, I forgot to quote Mora, I was thinking of the clip that she shared. I do like any clip where MM tries to sing, though.  ;D

Hilarious in that video is JLB, "Do you have to play that song?"  :lol

A few things have come to my mind but I'm actually going to list perhaps an unusual example here, and that is the guitar solo in A New Beginning. Practically any drummer could've filled that section with increasingly technical and intense drum fills, Mangini included. He certainly *has* the chops to be able to do that in a solo section. And most sections of that sort would go down that route; I could list plenty of examples in DT's music alone. For Mangini to exercise restraint there and truly let the guitar take centre stage in the only extended solo section on the entire album, is quite extraordinary and it makes that passage really stand out for me.

3 moments? I go with his 3 most emblematic performances in DT IMO: The Shattered Fortress - Breaking the Fourth Wall; S2N and The Alien.

TheCountOfNYC

-The gravity rolls with cymbal accents before the guitar/keyboard unison in Illumination Theory
-The drum solo in Enigma Machine
-The drum solo in Pale Blue Dot

Pretty much all of Enigma Machine is my favorite drum work from Mangini. But if I needed to pick a single moment... you already know the one.

There's also the one where he's playing golf in the back while JLB is talking during the last show of the I&W&B tour in Dallas. Which I also am glad I got to see.  :lol

I had a feeling it was in one of Crams vids.

1. Illumination Theory, from a drumming perspective, is one of the coolest things ever
2. The second verse of AVFTTOTW ("All my natural feelings..."). Insane rhythm
3. The rocket tom rhythm before the guitar solo in The Alien. Such a cool transition

Mr.Mister

- His audition Jam: the passion he showed, the undertanding of each band member. I wish DT would release more jam sessions like these.
- The Shatter Fortress at Boston: the irony of this being one of my fav performances from MM doesn't skip me. He really brought that performance to iconic levels for me with his drumming.
- The overall drumming of the last album. It's spectacular.

3. His performance in Illumination Theory

All of this 💯 🌟

Breaking the Fourth Wall is one of my favorite moments of the band, period. I'll add the iconic performance of Breaking All Illusions from this dvd to the above list. ✨

hard for me to just pick three (since the only ones that don't warrant mentioning are on D/T to me) and most of us here made great choices already, but I'll try and go ahead:

(in no order mind you)

His use of polyrhythms (three factors opening The Alien, four factors during View, 19 over 6 during Illu)
Met1 at Budokan in 2017
all the performances on the eternal three
bonus 1: Luna Park and BT4W entirely
bonus 2: Fire Garden with Steve Vai (and his drum solo in 1999)
All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

CraftyCaleb2483

The effects on the drums. If it's one thing that I rank MM above MP in, it's the drum effects
Quote from: twosuitsluke on October 14, 2024, 02:27:06 PMCaleb also has way better taste
Quote from: Evermind on March 30, 2025, 10:35:41 AMI'm gonna send 1) stuff that's too heavy 2) stuff that's too proggy 3) singers that sound like Freddie Mercury. Hope that sounds good.
