Minor off-topic for just a second:  Thanks to Hef for jumping on those other posts.  I deleted that whole sub-thread of discussion because it is pointless and off topic.  People need to knock off the stupid accusations.  It is, again, off topic and also comes across as a personal attack.  Yeah, it is possible that Angela is faking this entire thing and is just a gifted creative writer.  But that is possible of just about any thread.  There is no reason to accuse her or anyone else of being dishonest, and that needs to stop or additional warnings and/or bans will be handed out as appropriate to the circumstances.  Thanks.  Carry on.  Sorry for the further derail.
Thanks bosk.
No wonder the pages jumped from 9 to 8 XD

This reminds me of a question I've been wanting to ask: do your friends know that your conversations are being recorded and posted online. I suppose it would be illegal to do so without them knowing about it, so how did they react if/when you first told them how "public" this whole thing was going to BE?
Oh yeah definitely. there's a post in the early pages talking about them knowing this. if they said no, I wouldn't have posted.

1) Eve (everyone reacts)

May I suggest the Live version played on 1993 March 4th at the Limelight? I really do think that the samples from Joyce's piece bring the song to even higher peaks of beauty (my opinion might be biased, as the song is steady in my top 10). You wouldn't have to worry about the sound quality, as the recording of that particular night is from the soundboard.
You're right. I love spoken samples in music and while I know some people don't, I feel it works very well in Eve.

This thread WINS ALL THE THINGS!!! I hope you keep going with it. Don't let whatever negative comments get past Bosk and Co. derail you. You are truly blessed to have some great friends. :tup

By far the most entertaining 8 pages of this forum in recent months. Looking forward to more.  :yarr :corn

I've always been confused why those samples were added in, to be honest. There are songs where it makes perfect sense and fits really well like SDV and HTF but I definitely prefer Eve without them. Although for this experiment it may be good to play the one with samples just because there's more to discuss.

Given their musical tastes, I honestly think they will say that Eve is boring.  I'm not sure there is much there to grab a pop music fan.  Just because it is a soft song does not mean that people who aren't into metal will automatically like it.  But we shall see.  And we shall no doubt be entertained no matter the result.  :)

Thank you! You are too kind. Unfortunately,  I'm the kind of girl that takes all comments to heart. They either Build Me Up or Break Me Down and it's sometimes too hard to ignore them.

can't wait!  I'm glad Michelle chose those songs. She will enjoy it. Thanks for taking your time to read this!

I'm also wondering how you plan on doing some of the other longer tracks...I know SDOIT has already been mentioned, but what about SFAM? It may be better to just have all of them listen to these types of songs as a group, because it probably won't make sense if you split them up. Actually splitting up SDOIT makes more sense than SFAM in this context.

Viking of the Sagas

Those DT references just slip off the tongue like clockwork don't they. xD

Looking forward to those reactions!

It's quiet fun using lyrics of dt songs from context :)
And I'm sure you will enjoy.

Blasphemy!   ;)

The reason SFAM is loved isn't really the story but the music so I wouldn't skip it. Through Her Eyes might actually even get a positive reaction.  :lol
Also let's not kid ourselves, the SFAM story is incredibly dull and cliché so there's not that much harm done if they don't understand it.

(and yes, I just want to see the reaction to Dance of Eternity :neverusethis:)

I'm sorry!! Please don't incinerate me!!
Or....please don't implicate, incriminate, exacerbate too much at stake. Our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters forced. Perpetuating their ideals, a mindless act to stay the course.

Sorry about that.

Took me a VERY long time to figure out which song that's from.

I think the most repeated words after The Dance of Eternity will be "Why" and "What is the reason of". xD

You MUST specifically ask them about the crazy saloon-ish swingy piano section that Jordan does on the first part of the track. Really curious about the reactions, haha.

I think so. It's the one at 2:30. I call it the saloon solo. Reminds me of cowboys destroying a saloon in the old west, lol.

Now that you say that...that makes sense! My greatest worry is TOT and BC SL. Its uh....

OnTheBacksofAngela

A nightmare to remember- Portoysvocals, "messy" solo, overall heaviness
A rite of passage- deep meaning, hard to understand
Wither- saving grace
Shattered fortress- portmoys vocals, rudess solo
Best of times- saving grace 2
Count of tuscany- length and uhh, dont know what to say

As i am-meh
Dying soul- rap, ending solo
Endless sacrifice- i hope they like it...
Honor thy father- complete turn off
Vacant- saving grace
Soc- ???
Itnog- probably a turnoff.....

I'll get my peace of mind when you hear this song. On and on and on and on it goes. And with every passing day TRUE COLOR SHOWWWW!!!!!!!!

*cue epic sampling and instrumental*

And SDV will be up very soon.

Now, for the final studio song for Awake, we have Space Dye Vest with ASHLEY!!

Me: Hey Ashley! You got the last song from this album!
Ashley: Um yay?
Me: Yes it is. You guys might enjoy the next album more than this one.
Ashley: YAY!
Me:  :tup Now, this last song might be kind of strange. Let's just get started shall we?
Ashley: Yeah, let's do it. *puts on headphones*
Me: Yes, yes. Lyric sheets are here and try to enjoy.
Ashley: I'll try.
Me: Great.
After Space Dye Vest
Ashley: *Takes off headphones*
Me: What did you think?
Ashley: Hmmm. I got two of the most soft songs, right?
Me: Yes.
Ashley: I think I enjoyed it.
Me: R-REALLY?!
Ashley: Yeah, I mean. I love the piano.
Me: Yes, that was really nice. What else did you like? Oh, what did you think of the sampling?
Ashley: The what?
Me: You know, the words spoken by others. You heard the singer right?
Ashley: Yeah.
Me: Didn't you also hear a girl talk and a few other voices in the song?
Ashley: Oh yeah, I did!
Me: Those are called sampling. Using character quotes or comments from movies or radio's and inserting them in the song.
Ashley: Ah, that was nice. What's the song about?
Me: Hmm, let me check. Ah, here it is. The lyrics are about Moore falling in love with a picture of a model in a fashion magazine wearing a space-dye vest. "Kevin Moore saw this photograph in a fashion magazine of a beautiful model wearing a space-dye vest and he fell in love with her," LaBrie explained. "He carried that magazine around with him for ages, but he realized that the only way the innocence could be kept, so that he could retain that love for her, was if she stayed on the page. If he'd met her, all that would have been lost."
Ashley: Oh wow.
Me: Yeah. It's a really good song though. Portnoy said that if they knew Kevin would leave, the song would not be included in the album. Any thoughts on that?
Ashley: Not really. I mean, it's still cool they have this song in the album I guess. This song is very different. I've never heard this kind of song before.
Me: What do you mean?
Ashley: Well, this is the first sample I've ever heard and there is just something about this song that makes it stick out.
Me: So overall, you like it?
Ashley: Yeah, yeah I do. It's kind of like pop.
Me: How so?
Ashley: It talks about love.
Me: Well, just because it talks about love, doesn't mean it is pop.
Ashley: Why?
Me: What if it's about love, but it's talking about broken love and revenge? What if it doesn't follow the pop structure. Do you know what I mean?
Ashley: I guess.
Me: Don't worry. You will.
Ashley: Thanks.
Me: It's fine. You made my day. You actually like this song.
Ashley: It's very different and it still feels weird, but I still like it.
Me: YES!
Ashley: Um.....
Me: Sorry about that outburst.
Ashley: It's fine.
Me: Anyways, what do you think of all the people reading this?
Ashley: Meh.
Me: What's that supposed to mean?
Ashley: I mean, since I don't know what they are replying, I couldn't care less.
Me: Wanna look at some reactions to your other song?
Ashley: Sure.
Me: Hold up. OK nevermind.
Ashley: Why?
Me: It's nothing big. They didn't have a real opinion of your reaction, but that's fine.
Ashley: Whew.
Me: Great! Anything you want to add?
Ashley: No.
Me: Then....I have a surprise!
Ashley: What is it?
Me: Since our last song is finished......we are going to have a special reaction!
Ashley: How?
Me: Everyone will react.
Ashley: Everyone? You mean Sophia, Victoria, Nikki, Maria, and Michelle?
Me: Yes.
Ashley: What will we react to?
Me: Eve by Dream Theater.
Ashley: Oh.
Me: Don't worry, it's an instrumental.
Ashley: Um, yay?
Me: You guys may enjoy it. It is really laid back and calming.
Ashley: That's much better I guess.
Me: Great. Let's go call the others.
Ashley: Right behind you.

pcs90

It seems that overall the slower less busy songs are enjoyed more, which makes sense.

Great reaction! I knew she would like SDV, but I expected a more sentimental reaction. Anyway, good that she liked it!  :metal

BTW, and just out of curiosity, did you show her the lyrics of the samples?

Oh, I expected she would like the first sample. The "he doesn't know what a woman is" quote (From "A Room With A View") is astonishing brutally beautiful, maybe because something similar has happened to me, but I really love that quote. That's why I expected a bigger impression of her.

Tell me you're giving the full 6DoIT song to one of them, please :rollin
By the way, Misunderstood's ending might trigger some extraordinary WTF faces. Make sure you film that too

This has been a fascinating read, and one that I think we can all relate to when we've introduced our friends to DT.  Thanks for taking the time to put this whole thing together!
