But that James LaBrie though.

Labrie1984

Holy sh...! James Labrie sounds amazing... The last scream is ridiculous:). I agree, nevertheless, with the burial of keys.

Prog Snob

Hmm... Not sure what I'm missing, but I hear the keys fairly well.  I wouldn't call it a burial.

The Presence of Frenemies

Regarding the weirdness in the PMU clip, I kind of find it odd we don't get a single shot of JLB hitting the final scream. In fact, that panning shot almost seems to deliberately avoid him.

Labrie1984

I don't like the camera moving around. I'd rather see the band and their playing. I miss close-ups...

I was NOT sold after the Pull Me Under video but the On The Backs Of Angels video is terrific! I'll go order the Blue Ray now.

Does anyone know if this DVD has any improv on it? My favorite part of Budokan is the JR/MP duel and I hope to see something similar on Live at Luna Park.

mikeyd23

Nice OTBOA vid!!! JLB sounds fantastic and MM definitely impressed me more on this than the PMU video. There are certainly little things I could nitpick, but I'm just excited more than anything to watch this concert!

Really looking forward to this DVD!!  :tup

Labrie1984

James Labrie sounds exactly as good as I expected basing on the live concerts I've atended throughout this tour. No overdubbed has been used and I'm very happy with it.

There's a little jam before the last verse of Metropolis, and the standard drum/guitar/keyboard solos,

Loved this video. Very cool.

SeRoX

Well, yes JLB sounds amazing but the overall sound doesn't feel like it's a live show. It's just like all is coming from a machine.

I'd say this is because it's a song he had a hand in writing, so he's more confident in the parts.

On another note, I do love the extras they put in this song. The raindrops, the cityscape, even what looked like binary code during the buried keyboard section is pretty sweet. :tup

Thank you kind citizen.

They sound like a machine because that's what they all are :)

Yep, I get a bit of that feeling. The audio must have been tweaked a lot in production.

Ohhh, a new video! I wasn't expecting any! :P

Also, to the guy who loves improvisation, like the lovely girl said, brace yourself for the ending of Metropolis, it's going to blow you away :caffeine:

We'll find out soon enough. I ordered the Blu-ray just moments ago!  :tup

Metropolis blows me and thoughtfully smiles....

I'm a bit pissed off with the band. They went on saying how they decided to record the DVD in SA because they wanted the rest of the world to see how fans live the concerts down here and then they go and silence the crowd during the songs. WTF DT? One of the things I like the most about live releases is basically the band-crowd interaction and from what I can see in those 2 videos they trimmed it. I'm having second thoughts about getting this DVD....

Crowd sounded louder on OTBOA. To me at least.

It also was a lot earlier in the show.

Well, I haven't seen DT live since MP left, so I can only comment on it from these videos... but I've gotta say, I really do miss Mike Portnoy.

DT's live show has always been pretty laid back, but from these videos it's really evident that Portnoy brought most of whatever energy there was.

Maybe it's because the crowd is barely shown and almost never heard in either of these videos, but it just feels like the songs lack momentum and like the band and crowd aren't really into it.

I agree with others who have said that the band seem mechanical. To me, it's almost like you are watching DT rehearse, rather than perform.

I'm imagining what this performance is like with MP in the band. I'm seeing him fire-up the crowd up during the instrumental, and befor the final chorus. I'm imagining how much better this all sounds with MP behind the kit, drumming up energy and crowd enthusiam.

Yeah, I'm missing MP. Though I was one of his biggest critics when he first left, as time goes by I'm slowly realizing the little intangibles he brought to the table which made DT way better.

I'm watching something different then.  I've seen the concert dvd more than once and I feel like the energy from the crowd is amazing.  Portnoy brought something different to the stage, I'll agree with that much, but on any of the bootlegs I've seen of the last two tours, it seems like the stage presence of the guys is more relaxed.  DT have always had somewhat of a mechanical presence on occasion and I don't think that is any different pre or post Portnoy.

I'm not feelin' it. From the shows that I've watched DT looks just as energetic and personable as before excluding a few small, but important things.

I'll definitely miss the whole rotating set lists, mashups and covers and other cool nuggetz that MP brought. But I hear people saying this a lot, that there's no real energy to the shows without him and I honestly can't see it.

Edit: also yeah, the more laid back and improvisational they get the better for me personally - I enjoy hearing the studio songs brought to life, but I'd much rather get twists on those songs or other crazy antics (FII era type stuff)

RazielSR

Really cool OTBOA video!
Anyway, epic fail when he says "buona sera" hahaha! that's italian, not spanish, and the concert was in Argentina XD

KevShmev

I won't make the call on how energetic the band looks until I see the whole Blu-ray, but I think it's possible that a band like DT, knowing that they are recording themselves for a live release, gets so focused on the playing aspect that they sometimes forget about the performing (visually) aspect, because as a band of players, they want to make sure the playing is on the money, but it can come at the expense of the visual part.  I have seen it happen on several live DVDs with Rush.  Every time I have seen them live, all 11 times, Alex Lifeson is being silly and having a blast on stage, but it's like, on several of the live releases, he knew it was being recorded, so he toned that down at times to make sure his playing didn't suffer.

I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this.. but I've seen fan-shot footage of PMU from that night, and the scream is EXACTLY the same in both videos. In fact, everything is exactly the same in both videos except for literally one note from JLB on the syllable "fraid" in "not afraid". All they did to that note was take away some vibrato (which I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd do that). I can't tell anything else that they changed, but since the fan-shot footage is not super high quality, it is possible that parts here and there could have been tuned, but if so (and I think it's not so) it was very minor.

I think it was "Buenos Aires".

Mladen

The lack of JM shots worries me. I mean, how many cameras did they record this with?

Aside from that, all of it is awesome and I can't wait to get the DVD.  :metal

JiM-Xtreme

Watched the OTBOA clip. Now I'm excited (understatement). I don't believe DT have ever sounded this good live, and that's really saying something. Everything just sounds so polished, even the vocals... hell, JLB sounds better on this than the studio version of this song.

emtee

OtBoA was much more enjoyable to me than PMU.

theseoafs

Another great video.  Looks like Mangini will be much more upfront in the mix than he was on OTBOA, which is awesome.  He sounds awesome.

Jinx

The crowd in the OTBOA vid seems much louder than LAB or Score!!  :tup
