I'll take JLB's occasional crazy live voice over JR's overplaying of KM's original keyboard parts any day of the week (which happens here AGAIN).

Oh, don't tell me you don't love the unauthorized arpeggios before the sparrow falling part  :yarr

Those were very cool when MP was in the band and played that section faster. Now, with a MM that plays a clone of the studio version, they're quite meh  :lol

BlobVanDam

I love that he adds his own touch to it, especially as he still plays the first repetition of it faithfully. In fact he plays 95% of the song exactly as the original, and at some points is even more faithful to the studio version than KM was capable of live.

I absolutely love the unauthorized arpeggios, they really spice up that section and remind you of exactly who is playing the keys.

Unbelievable..... DT releases a sneak preview of one of the extras from their new Blu-ray/DVD with each member of the band performing at the top of their game, and people are actually bitching?

This looked and sounded PHENOMENAL, and I can't wait until November 5th!

efx

I think I might have mentioned it already but those arpeggios the way he overplays it kills it for me completely.

Agreed. While I am happy with positive or negative comments when they are reasonably explained, it definitely seems that some people want to criticise every single little nuance, instead of just enjoying the ride. Of course people aren't going to love everything, but here is a pretty cool performance of PMU, and i've heard just about every aspect criticised at some point already.  Legitimate things like the synching issue is totally understandable, but how any 'fan' of DT could honestly think James sounds bad here, or the mix is 'terrible' - is just a little mind boggling to me..

Well the fact remains that this isn't an intimate board run and populated by a group of like minded personal friends. It's the largest DT forum online with people from pretty much all walks of life and places to use a hackneyed phrase so I think with that in mind that the last thing you should be surprised by is that people have different things they'd like to focus on be it with positive feedback or what you might consider nitpickyness.

Is it really mind-boggling that some people might just honestly feel differently?

People here perfectly know it's the biggest DT online forum.
All in all, we are entitled to their opinion provided it is said with respect both for other members and the band. The fact is, I just sense that sometimes some people who have signed to the forum have only done it to be negatively critical of the band, nevermind the release. Some may feel like me.

And I respectfully think that some people might feel like those people do that because their opinions are at odds with their own.
My point is just that I'm consistently surprised that some people almost seem shocked that others don't agree with them.

I don't think they're that bad, but they do seem to hurt the momentum of the song.

efx

I think they kind of work back in the day when MP did the double time stuff on that part as they generally changed the feel of the song throughout. It's just that nowadays they play those songs as close to the album as possible so that part stands out and I agree with you, it hurts the momentum a bit.

I'm not shocked at all, quite the contrary. I'm an adult and I've learnt how to cope with other people's opinions. And hopefully, some have opinions  different than mine. Otherwise, the world would be a strange place to live in. ;D
Your second point is very interesting : indeed, they play the songs very close to the album versions now and strangely enough, PMU suffers from it. The pace is slower than other live versions, hence the feeling of fatigue fromm MM and the other guys.

YtseJamittaja

This is really cool performance but I agree everything with efx's comment above.

But this DVD is in my mailbox in next friday!!!! We lucky Finns! :CJS:

perfey

Really nice performance and playing by the band. I like the energy of the crowd and cant wait to see the first part of the show when they're even better. I like the overhead views too, it adds a new angle so to say :P.

Lowdz

Ok, so I've heard this song thousands of times. Still got goosebumps playing that.

James was a good as I expect him to be. It won't be perfect, it's a live concert ffs. I'd rather some duff notes than overdubbing, which always annoys the fuck out of me on live dvds.

This exactly.

I'm well aware this is the biggest DT message board. Doesn't make the constant negativity any less nauseating at times. Again - negative opinions are fine when explained well, and in a respectful manner. No issue with that in the slightest. But yes, I am mind boggled when every aspect is criticised, on a pre released video on you tube, of one song from a 3 odd hour show which will be in blu ray quality on release. Is it too much to expect to hear the whole thing first?

I think it sounds bad because he's frequently off pitch in this song. 5 seconds into that performance you can tell he is struggling to get the all the pitches. He's randomly changing a lot of notes--presumably because he isn't sure he can nail the originals-- and adding all these extra vocal "effects" (from the very first word, "lost"). That is an indication that one is fatigued and it's extremely obvious he is in this video. Some of the moments are just painfully bad.

A mistake here or there is perfectly normal and to be expected even from the instrumentalists, but this is all too common. I'm not happy at all with the vocal on this song. I really hope the rest of the DVD has a better performance.

Flacracker

Something about the mix is throwing me off. It doesn't sound live enough. It sounds way too clean. For me it creates a weird disconnect.

seasonsinthesky

i am extremely impressed with this and am very much looking forward to watching the Blu-ray!

weirdly, i didn't find any of the mix criticisms valid except MM's buried kick drum (and Myung buried in general) — i can hear every single JR key hit, all of MM's cymbals sound good (and real!), and JBL is phenomenal, way better than i was expecting; i like how much differently he sang some parts.

i think it's definitely evident that it's the end of the set and everybody is fairly spent, but it didn't ruin anything for me.

Definitely.

wasteland

I must admit that I liked the unauthorized arpeggios better when the song was played with a faster pace, (mind, not the warped version, that one was sincerely too much) but it still feels perfectly fine to me. It's a JR signature thing, like the monster lead for Derek or Kevin's flowing hair in the wind  :-X

Same here, it definitely sounded a bit odd the first time I heard it - the crowd a bit louder in the mix might have helped. Though honestly, I'll probably forget about that when I'm actually watching the full thing and I get a song or 2 in.

I thought James sounded pretty great, especially for the end of the set. And I have to say I've always loved those JR arpeggios - every time I listen to the studio version now, I sort of add them in to the song in my own head  :lol

Starting to get excited for this DVD again now  :metal
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Jinx

I think its strange that theres all the crowd noise at tue beginning then when it does that strange edit and you hear nothing... Also at times the sound doesnt match with the footage. And JPs lack of backing. I dunno, sometimes it makes me think it could be a re-recorded soundtrack   :\

Slain

James sounds great!  :yarr

Can't wait to get the blu-ray.

I have seen it again.

I´m really REALLY worried about the sync issues. It feels the same that overdubbing does. You see one thing and listen other.

How I hope this is because of You Tube compresion.

What happens is, that some people just get bored of a band. They are in some way, frustrated about what a band should be now, then, after and before.
Then, the same people tells you: "hey look at this new amazing band!!!" And you can clearly see that band is a bad copy of DT (of course there are and will be very good  bands but it was just to say an example).
Some people should just move on and stop listening to DT and live from the past and that's all.
Hey, maybe this PMU performance is not their best, but if you are trying to see all the time, the band performing better than ever, that's gonna make you happy some days and frustrated others. I mean, they are humans and they can't be perfect the whole time.
You will see better performances now than last tour or maybe their whole career and other performances that are not that good and maybe the (put whatever here) performance was better.

I find this with all live dvds these days. They look and sound too good these days. Which is weird to be considered a bad thing.

And chalk me up as one who likes the JR arpeggios.
