Forget the government shut down and mid-east turmoil.  If Cher sells more albums than DT I see little hope for humanity...

Best UK chart position for DT! Two up on ADTOE.

Maybe they are finally forgiving them that they aren't Dream Theatre.

Well, they do include the word "Theatre" in the artwork for this album...

Kotowboy

^ That'll be why it sold so much in the UK  ;D

According to this, DT looks to come in at #7.

Wow, amazing! It actually improved on ADTOE, for which I thought there was much more interest and expectation.

Why is nobody mentioning that they charted higher than a new Metallica album - albeit a live album - but it's still something.

:D :D :D

I had the same thought.  Considering how well-known Metallica are and how much bigger their fan base is compared to DT's, that is quite an accomplishment.

Quote from: Shadow2222 on September 26, 2013, 09:22:06 AMInterestingly, I've always found that Amazon is pretty telling in the US for chart positions, and they are 6th best selling right now, being beaten by, in order, Drake, Elton John, Cher, Kings of Leon, and Sting.

Pretty impressive that they are in front of Metallica by such a large margin, despite that the Metallica release is kind of a weird hybrid between sound track and live album.  Then again, although I haven't been paying much attention, I do not recall seeing much promotion at all for the Metallica album.

Side note:  I find it a bit odd that despite titling the movie/album "Through The Never," the song Through The Never is not played.

Well to be fair, you did say 'nobody'.

Kotowboy

It was more of a general thing. A figure of speech. But whatevs.

What I should have said is " why aren't more people commenting on it " ?

This is a testament to how tirelessly DT has worked to cultivate there fan base.  For a progressive and mostly metal band to chart that high is awesome.  They really are the reigning kings of prog.

It's such a shame that so many big artists released albums this week,

Imagine how high they could have got if they hadn't clashed with anyone big.

I can see them having a #1 album soon. It's the next thing for them to achieve.

I highly doubt they could ever hit #1 given the huge differential in sales between what DT sells in a week, vs what the big pop albums sell in a week.

Less mainstream bands are more "slow burn" in terms of sales.

This. Just from a quick glance at some of those articles, the new Drake album debuted in the US with over 600,000 first week sales, and earlier this year, Justin Timberlake had a first week of over 900,000. Heck, Rush saw Clockwork Angels sell over 105,000 in its first week in the US, and that got it #2.

DT would have to find several very barren consecutive weeks on the release calendar, or see an absolutely massive increase in their sales, to get anywhere near it. For a less than mainstream band playing the style of music they do, having multiple albums in a row debut in the top 10 is very impressive, and they should definitely be proud of it.

Who the fuck is Drake?

This. Without googling my guess is another artist who would have done hip-hop or R&B 10 years ago, but is instead using a 90's eurotrash producer to make it sound like 14 in a dozen trance/dance garbage. I hope I'm wrong though.

Outcrier

Word is his latest album is a bit good but why care, as Run The Jewels kills any hip hop album this year (and Electric Lady in R&B).

puppyonacid

The difference in sales between hitting the 6-10 spot as opposed breaking the top 5 is pretty huge.

I can't ever see DT hitting the number 1 spot without some sort of single that pushes them in to the stratosphere. It could happen, and these things tend to be more about luck than anything when it comes to less than mainstream bands like DT.

I would like to see it though as there'd be so many people in the public at large asking "who the fudge is this new band called Dream Theater?!?"

I find it funny that when I mention them to someone new I have to explain that "they sell out arenas worldwide and have been going nearly 30 years!"

I thought it was kinda cute when they were being interviewed for the grammy and the girl interviewing them was "OMGDZ.....an 8 minute songs!!! Thats like a song that goes on foreverz!!!" and JP was like "yea that's pretty standard."

All that said, I do wish they could find some way to catch a bit more traction because I believe there are plenty of Deep Purple, Led Zep, Yes etc fans out there that have never heard of them and would really like them.

Forever more into the night BLISTERING ROARRRRRRRRRR :lol :lol :lol

Kotowboy

It's pretty shitty that some people only listen to the radio and never check out anything less mainstream at all.

I hate when they go : " Oh - if the music you like is so good - why isn't it in the charts ? ;D "

I get that a lot too.  People don't seem to understand that popularity and talent are not commensurate with each other.

puppyonacid

Yup.

One Direction, Justin Bieber, Mr. Blobby, Milli Vanilli, Jedward..........and like a billion others all charted higher than DT.

I rest my case.

Kotowboy

What's in the charts is what is the best selling. [ At least that's how the UK charts work ]...

And people will only buy what they are exposed to...

So if people only watch MTV or listen to pop radio then no wonder that's all that sells.

And conversely - that's all that is on the radio and TV *because* that's what sells..

It's like some self-perpetuating vicious circle.

puppyonacid

puppyonacid

Off on a tangent slightly but on the lyrics for Fear of a Balnk Planet by Porcupine Tree; I always thought it was quite clever the way when he sang "MTV", in the lyrics it was printed as "eMpTy V"

I don't really blame MTV though. They're business and they have to move with the times......and they did have the headbangers ball. There are many more specialised stations though that still ignore DT and the likes. It's almost fashionable to ignore them and yet....if DT ever did garner any level of mainstream appeal these very same stations and so called "rock" magazines would be the first to accuse them of selling out.

Never mis-credit a Dream Theater lyric at DTF.

But yeah, without Googling it, my answer probably would have been "A Canadian rapper or something, I think".
