I've just never ever been reminded of the circus/carnival by JR's patches.

Probably because they have nothing to do with circuses or carnivals.  But somebody made that comparison once, and it apparently stuck, so all the cool kids who have nothing constructive to say can just throw that out there and act like it is a valid criticism.

Wouldn't the proper term be ragtime, Bosk? That was always my impression of them when I heard them.

The piano ones, yeah. But the ones like on The Enemy Inside, whatever instrument that sample is, I don't think it qualifies as ragtime. I could be wrong, though.

I'd say so:   https://www.jazzinamerica.org/jazzresources/stylesheets/4

Ok.... The song's been out for over 24 hours now. I bought the iTunes version this morning (which sounds 100x better than the stream). I've gotta say that the song is still amazing, and still getting better as I listen to it. That surprised me. I put it on my iPod as part of the shuffle of DT songs so I don't go to it automatically, in the hopes of avoiding becoming bored with it. I've only heard it twice today. I must say, it's a killer track to drive to.  :police:

thanks for supporting me Bosk ^_^

I'd say, the style JR plays those bits in is definitely ragtime. However, calling the patches themselves ragtime patches doesn't really hold water, since ragtime itself was "basically piano music" as that site says.
I do think ragtime is a better broad term to use than carnival music, though.

One more thing about this song-there's a certain atmosphere to it. Can't put my finger on it.

Ragtime is a style of play not a sound.

Podaar

It's difficult to characterize the patch JR is using on this song but I'd say it's similar to an organ grinder-ish tone. But, more digitized. *shrug*

This song is pretty awesome. My wife loved it, so yeah. Got a nice dark feel to it, pretty fucking metal, but that chorus just grabs the song and adds a layer of softness that gives the song depth. Did I just chocolate cake?

Am I the only one that still doesn't like the snare drum? (yes I bought the digital on iTunes) :)

I still agree with you too. I'm mostly ok with the tone and reverb of it, in and of itself, but I still feel like it is clipping in the mix. And that's....just bad.

Sycsa

The best thing about the snare that it sounds unique in the DT catalog. Which means, when you pop the album in ten years from now and hear that snare sound, you'll be like "yeah, that takes me back".

Until MP goes into the studio and re-records it.  :rollin

For me, the song suffers from the main problem with DT albums since Systematic Chaos, they can make interesting sections but not a entire song full of interesting sections (like Learning To Live), there's always generic parts mixed within the songwriting that detract points from the songs, like, you hear them and you think: "man, this tune could have been much better if they did this or did that"

Uhm yes and no. But I got your point. But like I, and other people said, think that won't stick on all the album. Guess it was just for the great impact this song has, sonically speaking.

Can't compare this nice single to LTL, IMO. Totally different type of song. Still a single this one.

No, ragtime is a very specific style, which JR has used a couple of times (TDOE, TDEN) but rarely. And maybe on one or two occasions he's done something reminiscent of circus/carnival music, but unfortunately that phrase just gets used to describe anything quirky or odd in prog music, and it gets kind of irritating.

I caved....and I loved it.

While I'll admit that it is more "safe DT"...as DT songs go, this really is one of the good ones.   I've only heard it once, and I don't want to wear it out, but I like it more on the first listen than I did CM or RoP....maybe even just a hair more than OTBOA.

I like the song and it grows on me with every listen. I like the snare sound.
It's also a bit painful to listen to due to the loudness war treatment :( I hope the HDTracks release (if there is one) is similar to ADTOE, which sounded significantly better than the CD (and it wasn't due to it being 24 bit, it was simply a different master).

adameastment

The song is great I think.

One thing though, why does the intro remind me of Megadeth? The song "This is How the Story Ends", it has a slight similarity.

Still, it's a freaking awesome song now matter who it's similar to :P

Really? The intro actually reminds me of "Sudden Death" by Megadeth.
