S/T, like most other bands with self-titled albums.
Came here to post this. It's not that tough.

FMP    :\

Kinda seems like what they're saying anyway. Self titled album and if the Purple themed artwork indeed is it .....then the whole 'purple' them is near and dear to a certain x drummer. FMP

Eh?  I seriously doubt they had Portnoy in mind when they named the album or did the artwork.  Portnoy doesn't exactly have a monopoly on the color purple. :lol

Anyway, S/T is the best one to use (how is that not an option??), but I suspect DT12 will become the standard, so I am fine with it.

Yeah I know. It was meant more in jest than anything....I only thought of it because that hue of purple in the probably fake album artwork is pretty much the MP Forum hue, and if that is indeed the album artwork MP will comment on it somehow, someway.

BTW....I'd go with DTDT

S/T or DT

Since the release the only correct one is simply "DT" since it follow the convention we have been using all along.  Most of the time when using any one of the other abbreviations it is in the context of talking about a Dream Theater album.

For example,
A thread going now is that ToT is the best album.  If I were to say, "I think DT will be better than ToT or FII" wouldn't be understand that based on the subject of the sentence?

not sure why we're trying to add extra numbers or letters into it

Only my poll it's DT12 (9 votes) and Chocolate Cake (6 votes) The rest have 1 or 0.

jonnybaxy

As i said in DT in studio thread: it should be DTDT1 as it's their FIRST self titled album

quick... tell me what was the band's seven album?  The eighth album?  You gotta think about it.  DTDT is the best choice, in my opinion.

Really? I mean, maybe it's just me because I have a knack for remembering a band's whole discography, but it doesn't take much for me to remember the band's albums in order, or which release they were. Heck, the title of Octavarium is a dead give away, as is Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. The others just sort of click right away if anyone asked me.

I'd add, though, that if the cover lends itself to an obvious nickname, that'd be neater than any of those.
Likely what I'd refer to the album when speaking about it verbally (like Metallica's "the Black album"). But when it comes to writing it on forums like this, I'll go with:
Quote from: Full Speed on June 06, 2013, 11:58:35 AM
S/T, like most other bands with self-titled albums.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

DTDT makes the most sense to me.  In the future I won't remember it's the 12th album unless I count up all of the releases.  For example, quick... tell me what was the band's seventh album?  The eighth album?  You gotta think about it.  DTDT is the best choice, in my opinion.
Yeah, but we would know it's DT's 12th album because we'll be calling it DT12.

My bet is that the Doc is going to go with "other": DTVT.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

DTDT, unless the cover art and/or track names inspire something more clever.
Quote from: LithoJazzoSphere on November 28, 2024, 04:50:14 PMThe senecadawg who won 11 roulettes is dead and gone.  He is now diogenesdawg2.

How about S/T (Self-Titled)? That's what I've got on my calender

Big Hath

if we're calling it DTDT, I will have to start calling the other albums:

DTIAW
DTAwake
DTFII
DTSFAM
etc

jingle.boy

I voted DTDT, but now think (as others have mentioned) s/t is the only appropriate response. It's not like we call albums SXSX, or QRQR, or SBSB.
Quote from: ReaperKK on July 28, 2018, 07:12:37 PMI didn't know I could handle another 10 inches and it was rough but in the end I'm glad I did it.

Has it been confirmed yet that the purple Majesty logo is the artwork? I HIGHLY doubt it considering their artwork in the past, plus it looks like a 3rd day photoshop class project from a DT fan

Kotowboy

I vote for DT12 or S/T.

Nobody calls The Black Album " Metallica " and nobody calls The White Album " The Beatles " .

All our problems could be solved if they called the new album "The Dream Theater" --- TDT

wolven74

I'll likely just call it DT when referring to the album, because honestly, what other band are we going to refer to in a forum dedicated to DT?? So, I presume that if I say something like: "I like *insert song title here* on DT" everyone will know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, why can't we just call it DT, exactly? What would we be confusing it with? The band name? I'm pretty sure we would be able to tell which "DT" we're talking about within the context of a sentence.

There are a lot of Devin Townsend fans here, and whenever he gets mentioned on this side of the board, discussions can get a little confusing.

Here's my quick reference tool for the middle albums:
Six Degrees (6 songs) = 6th album
Train of Thought: 7 songs = 7th album
Octararium: 8 songs and Octa = 8th album

But yeah, I see your point.

I went with DT12.

We can't just call it DT, because the confusion and ambiguity would be ridiculous. "I just listened to DT". Ok, but which album?   :\
DTDT sounds silly and redundant.
DT2 is nice, but it's a bitch to write easily, so it's not much of an abbreviation at all. :lol
And S/T just seems wrong to me, especially as it's such a generic label that could apply to pretty much every single band ever.

DTF is already in the habit of calling it DT12 from discussing the album, so it's a natural progression really.

Given that album titles are technically supposed to be italicized, the answer is now obvious:

DT
