I went with DT12.

We can't just call it DT, because the confusion and ambiguity would be ridiculous. "I just listened to DT". Ok, but which album?   :\

I can't see anyone saying that on this forum and people thinking they were talking about the band in general.

DT12 is just like DTDT to me.

might as well call all the albums by their number then DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4, DT5, DT6 . . .

So now you expect people to not only correctly use context, but be able to count all the way from 1 to 12 too? We're only human, man!

I have a good feeling people will be calling it The Purple Album, provided the artwork is purple, and eventually it will be TPA

about the only alternative to DT I can live with if that sort of artwork is what comes to pass

I want DTDT, DT12, or maayybe TVA (purple is a gigantic understatement).

S/T is entirely not unique, and Dream Theater deserves MUCH more than a stupid generic title like that. This album is NOT called "Self Titled," it's called "Dream Theater." One is clearly much much more majestic and worthy of the music this album will contain than the other.

For example,
A thread going now is that ToT is the best album.  If I were to say, "I think DT will be better than ToT or FII" wouldn't be understand that based on the subject of the sentence?

You think Trial of Tears single-handedly beats every full Dream Theater album including it's own?? :neverusethis:

Please... "Self-Titled" is not a "stupid generic title". ::)

Oh jeez, are you really gonna play the "Dream Theater deserves better than that" card? :tdwn :tdwn

Exactly.

I'm with Deb, Kev, and any other monosyllabic, "e for a middle letter" people who share that sentiment.

yes it is! That's why I'm happy it's not the title of the new Dream Theater album!

and guys come on, this topic is just not that serious, I'm just saying what I think..

 :chill

I just happen to disagree on that.  Fair enough? :)

None of those are the title of the new album either.  Just saying...;)

oh yes! I was referring more to the comment by Mr. Kev and the double thumbs down.  :lol :lol there's really no problem here, I swear!

Yes, but the point here is that we don't want to use the real title (or at least most of us, including me) because it can easily get confused with the name of the band. I never said "Dream Theater Dream Theater" or "Dream Theater 12" or "The Violet Album" were the name of the album, I simply said they'd be a better substitute for the name of the album than "Self-Titled" since they are unique.

KevShmev

I suppose so, but how does DTDT even make sense?  What's next, we start calling Images and Words DTI&W, Awake DTAwake, Falling into Infinity DTFII, etc.?  At least DT12 has the "Dream Theater's 12th album" connotation there.

Besides, I suspect the album cover will have that purple color, and The Purple Album will become the unofficial title, similar to the Beatles' White Album and Metallica's Black Album, so it will all be good.

It makes sense because, unlike with all the other albums, we are agreeing to call it something other than it's original name. One could also say in disagreement to "DT12," "what's next, DT1, DT2, DT,3??". The answer to both is "no, that's not next because this is the only album without an easily referable name".

BlobVanDam

I still have a feeling that the promo image has little to do with any final album cover (that's not based on anything other than my own feeling), but with how people are already embracing the purple thing, I hope the album cover is something along those lines at least in colour and feel, rather than some image put together from stock images.

If the album is self titled, I think it makes sense to go with a simple cover that more generally represents the band, like the new Queensryche album cover just featuring the logo and name.

Yazman

I think that we should say STA - Self Titled Album.

I know you're just making a joke.  To your point though, I actually thought about that when I posted it, but again it comes down to context.  It wouldn't make sense that I was referring to a song in the context of my sentence. This is why we should call it DT.  There is really no reason to break from convention.  There will always be exceptions and weird situations where a certain acronym isn't clear, it's simply the nature of using one.

Jaq

Does this even require a discussion? Unless a band does more than one self titled album, you call it the self titled album. The Black Album is called the Black Album because Metallica didn't actually give a name to it-their name isn't even on the cover. Dubbing it the Purple Album because of one image on Facebook that may not be the cover art is premature. And if the name DREAM THEATER is good enough for the band name, it's not simple and generic as an album title.

Huff puff. Did I get everything?  :lol

Lucien

Now, here's a challenge. Try to imagine the band with a different name.

How does an album called "Dream Theater" sound?

Kwyjibo

I still think it's lame to put out a self titled album so I will call it TATWTLTNP (That album they were too lazy to name properly).

Nobody outside the music scene does this. Imagine if Steven Spielberg had thought that "jaws" sounded too much like "yawn" and therefore had named the movie "Steven Spielberg". Can't imagine that this would've been that successful

Lucien

Movies are different in that when you self-title (I've never heard of a self-titled movie) it, you don't instigate perfection

King Postwhore

"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

ProgressiveIce

Why isn't S/T an option, it's the most obvious one.

Kotowboy

I'm gonna abbreviate it DT12 until we reach a general consensus - probably after the album is out.

Led Zep 4 gets called Led Zep 4 despite there being no 4 on the cover or " Zoso " for the same reason ;D

puppyonacid

Dunno if this has been pitched but how about roman numerals?

DTXII or even just XII

Or Roman numerals for the year, so then it becomes DTMMXIII. :neverusethis:

S/T, like most other bands with self-titled albums.
This or, depending on whether the pic with the Majesty symbol is the cover art, TPA (The Purple Album).
